Repair of DNA damaged by ionizing radiation and other oxidative agents in yeast and human

Description: Treatment of cells with oxidative DNA damaging agents such as ionizing radiation and hydrogen peroxide produces .OH radicals which attack DNA, producing single strand breaks and double strand breaks that have a 3'-blocked terminus with a phosphoglycolate or a phosphate group attached to the 3'-terminus. While DNA strand breaks with 3'-blocked termini are the hallmark of oxidative DNA damage, the mechanisms by which such blocked 3'-termini are removed in eukaryotes remain poorly understood. The … more

Criticality Safety Evaluation of Hanford Tank Farms Facility

Description: Data and calculations from previous criticality safety evaluations and analyses were used to evaluate criticality safety for the entire Tank Farms facility to support the continued waste storage mission. This criticality safety evaluation concludes that a criticality accident at the Tank Farms facility is an incredible event due to the existing form (chemistry) and distribution (neutron absorbers) of tank waste. Limits and controls for receipt of waste from other facilities and maintenance of t… more

Bottom production

Description: In the context of the LHC experiments, the physics of bottom flavoured hadrons enters in different contexts. It can be used for QCD tests, it affects the possibilities of B decays studies, and it is an important source of background for several processes of interest. The physics of b production at hadron colliders has a rather long story, dating back to its first observation in the UA1 experiment. Subsequently, b production has been studied at the Tevatron. Besides the transverse momentum spect… more

A Development of On-Line Temperature Measurement Instrumentation for Gasification Process Control Progress Report

Description: This progress report covers continuing work to develop a temperature probe for a coal gasifier. A workable probe design requires finding answers to crucial questions involving the probe materials. We report on attempts to answer those questions. We received and studied new samples of an important thermographic phosphor, YAG:Dy. We studied the brightness as a function of dopant concentration and the relative brightnesses of the pertinent thermographic emission lines, both with respect to each ot… more

Opportunities for Small Biomass Power Systems. Final Technical Report

Description: The purpose of this study was to provide information to key stakeholders and the general public about biomass resource potential for power generation. Ten types of biomass were identified and evaluated. The quantities available for power generation were estimated separately for five U.S. regions and Canada. A method entitled ''competitive resource profile'' was used to rank resources based on economics, utilization, and environmental impact. The results of the analysis may be used to set priori… more

National energy use of consumer electronics in 1999

Description: The major consumer electronics in U.S. homes accounted for nearly 7 percent of U.S. residential electricity consumption in 1999. We attribute more than half of this figure (3.6 percent) to televisions, videocassette recorders, and DVD players, and nearly one-third (1.8 percent) to audio products. Set-top boxes currently account for a relatively small fraction of residential electricity use (0.7 percent), but we expect this end-use to grow quickly with the proliferation of digital set-top boxes,… more

A Moment-Based Condensed History Algorithm

Description: ''Condensed History'' algorithms are Monte Carlo models for electron transport problems, They describe the aggregate effect of multiple collisions that occur when an electron travels a path length s{sub 0}. This path length is the distance each Monte Carlo electron travels between Condensed History steps. Conventional Condensed History schemes employ a splitting routine over the range 0 {le} s {le} s{sub 0}. For example, the Random Hinge method splits each path length step into two substeps; on… more

Integration of Radiation-Hard Magnetic Random Access Memory with CMOS ICs

Description: The research undertaken in this LDRD-funded project addressed the joint development of magnetic material-based nonvolatile, radiation-hard memory cells with Sandia National Laboratory. Specifically, the goal of this project was to demonstrate the intrinsic radiation-hardness of Giant Magneto-Resistive (GMR) materials by depositing representative alloy combinations upon radiation-hardened silicon-based integrated circuits. All of the stated goals of the project were achieved successfully. The ne… more

Low Odor, High Yield Kraft Pulping

Description: In laboratory cooks pure oxygen was profiled into the circulation line of a batch digester during two periods of the cooking cycle: The first injection occurred during the heating steps for the purpose of in-situ generation of polysulfide. This chip treatment was studied to explore stabilization against alkaline induced carbohydrate peeling and to increase pulp yield. Under optimum conditions small amounts of polysulfide were produced with yield increase of about 0.5% These increases fell below… more
