Informal progress report of the explosives group. Quarterly progress report, September--November 1958

Description: The relatively high heats of combustion of CHN compounds containing multiple bonds has prompted an investigation of the possible use of these compounds as explosives components. Three possible systems are being considered for testing in the small scale plate push apparatus: acrylonitrile-tetranitromethane, propiolonitrile-tetranitromethane and dicyanoacetylene-tetranitromethane. Samples of propiolamide and acetylene dicarboxamide, intermediates in the synthesis of propiolonitrile and dicyanoacetylene respectively, have been prepared and their infrared spectra determined. The heats of explosion of uncased charges of bis-trinitroethylnitramine has been performed. A program to investigate some properties of high explosives at microwave frequencies is being undertaken. Heterogeneous explosives consisting of metal-loaded organic explosives were also tested. Synthesis work was performed on nitrogen-fluorine compounds, boron-hydrogen-nitrogen compounds, reaction of hexachloromelamine with chlorinetrifluoride, and nitration studies.

Hypothesis concerning irradiation embrittlement of uranium

Description: In discussions with a number of people, a hypothesis has been evolved which appears to fit available information concerning irradiation embrittlement of uranium as well as indicate a possible solution to the problem. The purpose of this memorandum is to expound this hypothesis as an aid to those working with the problem. Since it embodies the ideas of many people, no claim to unique authorship is implied.

Statistical study of variations in yield. 234-5 Building Reduction Operations

Description: This study was made to evaluate the effects of several operatin variables on the yield at the reduction step in motel fabrication. The original question was whether or not the addition of recycled metal to the charge had an effect on the yield. To circumvent possible masking of such as effect by changes in other operating factors, simultaneous data on the weight of Pu in the powder charge, the % conversion of the powder to PuF{sub 4} in the fluorination step, the firing time, and the maximum temperature were also studied. This permitted estimation of the separate effects of al five factors. The period covered by the data was October through December, 1950.

Equipment description of proposed RDA-5 canning machine

Description: The General Engineering Laboratory has submitted a cost estimate and a proposal covering the design, fabrication, construction, and testing of a uranium slug canning machine. This machine will cover requirements for mechanization of only the operations occurring within the aluminum-silicon canning bath. These operations are: Can and cap preheating, Can and cap wetting, Canning assembly, and Quenching. Stated briefly, the machine is required to insert a prepared uranium slug into an aluminum can and close the can opening with an aluminum cap. All assembly operations will be carried out beneath a molten bath of standard Hanford aluminum-silicon bonding alloy. The uranium slug is preheated and prewetted before being manually transferred to the slug assembly and quench machine. The process performed by the machine will be integrated with the manual slug preheating and wetting equipment so that proper preheating and wetting is attained before the slug is inserted into the machine. After assembly the completed canned slug will be transferred to the water quenching station, where the components are held firmly together until the molten aluminum-silicon has frozen, forming a homogeneously bonded assembly. This report provides a detailed description of the machine.

Optimum Lifting Bodies at High Supersonic Airspeeds

Description: Memorandum presenting a determination of the shapes of bodies with minimum pressure drag for a given lift at high supersonic speeds and satisfying conditions of given length and width with the aid of Newton's law of resistance. The resulting shapes have flat bottoms which are also rectangular. To determine if the bodies do actually have improved lift-drag ratios at high supersonic speeds, several wedges satisfying numerically different sets of given conditions were tested at Mach number 5.
