The solution chemistry of polonium (Ad Interim Report)

Description: This document is a March 1949 Ad Interim Report from the Mound Laboratory on the solution chemistry of polonium. A consideration of the valences of the elements of the Group VI-A would indicate that the oxidation states of -2, 2, 4, and 6 might be expected for polonium. From the decrease in stability of the hydrides of these elements with increase in atomic number, one would expect that the compound H{sub 2} Po would be very unstable and that the oxidation state of -2 would not occur in solution. Furthermore, the stability of the oxidation state +6 as well as the stability of the highest oxidation state of a given element decreases as the atomic number increases in Group VI-A and Period VI respectively. For these reasons, the oxidation state +6 for polonium would be expected to occur only in a strongly oxidizing medium. The +4 state would be expected to be stable. The work discussed herein indicates that polonium exists as PoO{sup ++} in a nonoxidizing or reducing medium.

A report on lithium, sodium, and liquid neutron sources

Description: The objectives in producing neutron sources are to produce uniform products of as high efficiencies as possible from the neutron yielding elements and to do this in the safest manner. The purpose of the present work was to improve the methods of preparing sources and at the same time increase the types of sources available. Lithium, sodium, and their compounds were chosen because the neutron fluxes and energies are low, thus making the experimental work less hazardous to the operator. Also, the elements are quite reactive, so that techniques which are successful with them can be easily adapted to other materials. Solvents for polonium, ways of mixing polonium and target, neutron yields, reproducibility, decay of the sources, means of recovering polonium, and materials for containers, were investigated.

The Method of Characteristics for the Determination of Supersonic Flow Over Bodies of Revolution at Small Angles of Attack

Description: "The method of characteristics has been applied for the determination of the supersonic-flow properties around bodies of revolution at a small angle of attack. The system developed considers the effect of the variation of entropy due to the curved shock and determines a flow that exactly satisfies the boundary conditions in the limits of the simplifications assumed. An Evaluation of Air-Borne Radar as a Means of Avoiding Atmospheric Turbulence

Description: "Gust-velocity measurements and air-borne-radar observations obtained during a transcontinental flight in July 1947 have been analyzed as part of a general investigation of the uses of air-borne radar. The analysis indicates that some reduction in turbulence and a consequent reduction in the risk of encountering the larger gust velocities may be obtained by avoiding portions of clouds giving a radar echo" (p. 1).

Theoretical antisymmetric span loading for wings of arbitrary plan form at subsonic speeds

Description: A simplified lifting-surface theory that includes effects of compressibility and spanwise variation of section lift-curve slope is used to provide charts with which antisymmetric loading due to arbitrary antisymmetric angle of attack can be found for wings having symmetric plan forms with a constant spanwise sweep angle of the quarter-chord line. Consideration is given to the flexible wing in roll. Aerodynamic characteristics due to rolling, deflected ailerons, and sideslip of wings with dihedral are considered. Solutions are presented for straight-tapered wings for a range of swept plan forms.

The aileron characteristics of the complete model are presented in the present report with a very limited analysis of the results.

Tank spray tests of a jet-powered model fitted with NACA hydro-skis

Description: Report presenting tank results for take-off tests with a powered dynamic model of a hypothetical jet-propelled high-speed airplane fitted with NACA hydro-skis and with flush turbojet intakes on the upper part of the fuselage near the nose. Some of the investigations included were the possibility of making take-offs without spray entering the intakes, the effect of turbojet air inflow on the tendency of spray to enter the intakes, and the effect of jet power on trim.

Description: From Summary: "The pressure drops through electrically heated Inconel tubes with length-diameter ratios of 29.25, 58.50, 87.75, and 117.00 have been measured at entrance Mach numbers from approximately 0.12 to the value at which choking occurred. The heat-input rate was varied from zero to the highest values allowable without damaging the tubes. Experimental data and a number of computed variables are presented in tabular form."

Experimental investigation at supersonic speeds of twin-scoop duct inlets of equal area 3: inlet enclosing 37.2 percent of the maximum circumference of the forebody

Description: Report presenting testing of a twin-scoop duct inlet that enclosed 37.2 percent of the forebody circumference at Mach numbers between 1.36 and 2.01. The approach to each scoop consisted of a ramp that deflected the flow to create an oblique shock wave in front of the duct entrance. Results regarding the inlet proportions, ramp angle, slots, and angle of incidence are provided.

Effect of Exhaust Pressure on the Cooling Characteristics of a Liquid-Cooled Engine

Description: "Data for a liquid-cooled engine with a displacement volume of 1710 cubic inches were analyzed to determine the effect of exhaust pressure on the engine cooling characteristics. The data covered a range of exhaust pressures from 7 to 62 inches of mercury absolute, inlet-manifold pressures from 30 to 50 inches of mercury absolute, engine speeds from 1600 to 3000 rpm, and fuel-air ratios from 0.063 to 0.100. The effect of exhaust pressure on engine cooling was satisfactorily incorporated in the NACA cooling-correlation method as a variation in effective gas temperature with exhaust pressure. Large variations of cylinder-head temperature with exhaust pressure were obtained for operation at constant charge flow" (p. 1).
