Development of a new flutter testing technique using a towed dynamic airplane model equipped with an automatic stabilizing system: Experimental and calculated dynamic stability characteristics for speeds up to 200 mph

Description: Report presenting testing of a towed airplane model in the 19-foot pressure tunnel in conjunction with the development of a flutter testing technique. The model was equipped with an autopilot to keep the model flying straight and level in the tunnel while restrained only in drag. Results regarding period and cycles to damp to half amplitude, time histories, and motions of the flexible wing model are provided.

Preliminary Report on Experimental Investigation of Engine Dynamics and Controls for a 48-Inch Ram-Jet Engine

Description: Engine dynamics and controls data are presented for a ram-jet engine which was operated in a free-jet facility at a Mach number of 2.76 and altitudes from 68,000 to 82,000 feet. The predominant engine dynamic characteristics was dead time, with values ranging from 0.018 to 0.053 sec. The control systems were designed to hold a constant ratio of a diffuser static pressure to an inlet-cone reference static pressure.

Nonuniform Burnup and Poisoning Effects in a Reactor and Validity of Uniform Approximation

Description: Memorandum presenting the application of the nuclear-reactor simulator to an investigation of the validity of the customary assumption of uniform distributions of fuel burnup and fission-product poisoning in a reactor core. The two-group calculation results show the effects of the approximation on the reactivity, power distribution, and xenon-135 distribution for a specific power reactor in which the initial power density varied by a factor of approximately 4 over the core volume.

The store was separately sting-mounted on its own six-component internal balance and was traversed through a wide systematic range of spanwise, chordwise, and vertical positions.

Description: Report presenting an investigation at two Mach numbers to examine the flow, force, and moment characteristics associated with spoilers mounted on a flat plate at a range of sweep angles. Pressure measurements were obtained over the plate and spoiler faces. The pressures were integrated to determine the spoiler lift, pitching-moment, drag, and hinge-moment characteristics.

Description: Report presenting an investigation at transonic speeds to determine the effects of fences, drooped nose, combination fences and drooped nose, and vortex generators on a 45 degree sweptback wing-fuselage combination. The purpose of undertaking this investigation was due to the pitch-up tendency that results from leading-edge vortex-type flow on thin sweptback wings. The data for each component and their interaction with one another is also provided.

Tabulated pressure data for a series of controls on a 60 degree delta wing at Mach numbers of 1.61 and 2.01

Description: An investigation has been made at Mach numbers of 1.61 and 2.01 and Reynolds numbers from 1.7 X 10 to 7.6 X 10 to determine the pressure distributions over a 60 deg. delta wing having 20 different control configurations. Measurements were made at angles of attack from 0 deg to 15 deg for control deflections from -30 deg to 30 deg. This report presents the complete tabulated pressure data for the range of test conditions.

Experimental investigation of air-side performance of liquid-metal to air heat exhangers

A theoretical study of the lifting efficiency at supersonic speeds of wings utilizing indirect lift induced by vertical surfaces

Description: Report presenting a theoretical study of the possibility of improving the lifting efficiency of aircraft flying at supersonic speeds using indirect lift, which can be induced on the wing by the fuselage shape and/or wing end plates. Results indicated that lifting efficiency of a planar wing may be improved by favorable interference induced by lateral forces on the end plates or on the sides of the fuselage.
