Improving Student Learning While Decreasing Bias in Teaching Through Simulation

Description: Research on the simEquity project which will implement a scalable model for developing equitable, culturally responsive teaching practices through simSchool, a simulated teaching environment. The project will identify best practices to help teachers recognize and mitigate implicit biases that often impact student success. The project team will iteratively develop and test an AI-driven set of bias reduction tools that can be added to existing simulation instruction modules.

MRI: Acquisition of a High Performance Hybrid Computer Cluster for Computational Modeling

Description: Research grant for the purchase, installation, and operation of a new high-performance computing (HPC) resource, called CRUNTCH4, to be deployed at the University of North Texas’ (UNT) Center for Advanced Scientific Computing and Modeling (CASCaM). This much needed HPC resource combines different computing architectures and significant amounts of data storage, all connected via a high-speed communications fabric. This computing resource will provide the means for CASCaM investigators to continue research on a broad range of topics including quantum chemistry, materials design, biomolecular simulations, machine-learning based chemical discovery, and bioinformatics, among others.

IRES Track II - Cape Horn ASIs: Climate change and disease ecology at the southern end of the Americas

Description: Research giving students the opportunity to be trained in quantitative experimental design and work as part of a multinational research collaboration to study infectious disease emergence in one of the few remaining pristine places on Earth. The Cape Horn Biosphere Reserve (CHBR) off the southern tip of South America protects pristine ecosystem is perfect for this type of graduate student training.

The project addresses the needs of Deaf and Blind users who often lack fundamental access for many A/V materials in digital repositories while also providing benefit to abled users and those with other special needs through efforts to transcribe, translate, describe, interpret, and chapter both research-oriented and primary-source A/V content.

Modulating 3D Cellular Connectivity Via Spatially-Controlled Programmable Bonding

Description: This project seeks to demonstrate proof-of-concept for technology that allows one to systematically place cells on substrates to create complex 3D assemblies with precise control over individual cellular interactions. The technology generated within this proposal will open new avenues for studying multicellular communication pathways, stem cell differentiation, and understanding developmental processes. Spatially-defined cell-cell communication plays a critical role in numerous disease and developmental processes that include osteoarthritic degeneration, cancer metastasis, and organ regeneration.

Process and Materials Development for Additive Manufacturing (AM) of Tungsten-Based Alloys with Superior High Temperature Performance and Good Room Temperature Ductility

Description: Research on CALPHAD simulations will be conducted to optimize the chemical composition of tungsten based alloys towards 3D printability while boosting mechanical performance through solid solution and dispersion strengthening. This will followed by powder prototyping to validate the simulation results experimentally and to finalize the chemical composition of interest. Process parameter optimization and post-process heat treatment design will help to achieve optimal low-to-high temperature mechanical properties. Mechanical testing and microstructural characterization will be performed to establish process-microstructure-property relationships.

Description: Grant for the University of North Texas Departments of Information Science, Learning Technologies, and Linguistics, in partnership with the International Association of School Librarians, to hold a forum about building the capacity of school librarians to provide services for English language learners (ELLs). The forum will convene contributors from the school library community and ELL stakeholders, such as linguists, ELL community members, public librarians, educational technologists, teachers, and school administrators to explore strategies and best practices for teaching ELLs.
