Fundamental theory of elastic wave scattering by defects in elastic materials: integral equation methods for application to ultrasonic flaw detection

Description: The use of ultrasonic methods in nondestructive testing depends on the interpretation of the scattering of sound waves by flaws. The theory of elastic waves and their scattering in non-uniform media is developed in detail from first principles, and in generality. Both integral equation and differential methods are discussed, with emphasis on the former. General methods for defining scattering cross sections are presented, and conservation theorems are noted. The Born Approximation to the integr… more

Physical properties of halthane series adhesives, part 2 of 2. Period covered: October--December 1976. [Urethanes: tensile adhesion; bulk viscosity; hardness]

Description: The Halthane series of urethane adhesives have sufficient adhesive strengths and cure times for most assembly processes at Pantex. The efficiency of preparation and handling of the three systems are nearly equal. Physical properties are more consistent between samples for the 87-1. The 73-18 system is ranked in the middle and 73-14 as the least consistent. The 87-1 system is high in viscosity and adhesive bond strength. The low viscosity of 73-18 and 73-14 allows more consistency in bond thickn… more

Tritium storage development. Progress report No. 12, April--June 1977. [In metal hydride; polymer impregnated tritiated concrete]

Description: Laboratory work was continued on hydriding of zirconium sponge and rod under varying conditions of temperature (400 to 900/sup 0/C) and pressure (0-1000 torr) to determine optimum conditions for the formation of hydrides with desirable mechanical properties. Titanium sponge and rod were also hydrided for comparison. Zirconium and titanium samples containing tritium were prepared and initial leach data were obtained. Leach rates for zirconium in distilled water ranged from 1.1 x 10/sup -6/ to 4.… more

Transport of solid commodities via freight pipeline: demand analysis methodology. Volume IV. First year final report

Description: In order to determine the feasibility of intercity freight pipelines, it was necessary to determine whether sufficient traffic flows currently exist between various origins and destinations to justify consideration of a mode whose operating characteristics became competitive under conditions of high-traffic volume. An intercity origin/destination freight-flow matrix was developed for a large range of commodities from published sources. A high-freight traffic-density corridor between Chicago and… more

Input and decayed values of radioactive liquid wastes discharged to the ground in the 200 Areas through 1975

Description: Low and intermediate level liquid wastes from chemical separations processing of spent reactor fuel elements have been discharged to the ground in the 200-Areas since 1944. Large volumes of process cooling water, normally free of radioactive contaminants, are discharged to surface ditches or natural surface depressions (ponds). Lesser volumes of liquid waste such as steam condensates, process condensates, scavenged process waste supernatants, and plutonium processing wastes have been, or are be… more

One and two electron integrals over Cartesian Gaussian functions

Description: A formalism is developed which allows overlap, kinetic energy, potential energy and electron repulsion integrals over cartesian Gaussian functions to be expressed in a very compact form involving easily computed auxiliary functions. Similar formulas involving the same auxiliary functions are given for the common charge moments, electric-field operators, and spin-interaction operators. Recursion relations are given for the auxiliary functions which make possible the use of Gaussian functions of … more

Direct time-domain techniques for transient radiation and scattering. [Introduction to transient electromagnetics]

Description: A tutorial introduction to transient electromagnetics, focusing on direct time-domain techniques, is presented. Physical, mathematical, numerical, and experimental aspects of time-domain methods, with emphasis on wire objects excited as antennas or scatters are examined. Numerous computed examples illustrate the characteristics of direct time-domain procedures, especially where they may offer advantages over procedures in the more familiar frequency domain. These advantages include greater solu… more

Trends in exploration and exploration equipment for uranium

Description: Uranium exploration once again is in a ''boom'' cycle. The energy needs of the OPEC and non-OPEC countries alike have created a demand for uranium which appears certain to increase in future years. In turn, this demand has stimulated a dramatic rise in both the price of uranium and the exploration activity necessary to discover new reserves. One immediate reaction to the sudden increase in uranium exploration activity has been the evaluation of old exploration methods and equipment. This paper … more
