Alkali deposits found in biomass power plants: A preliminary investigation of their extent and nature. Volume 1

Description: Alkali in the ash of annual crop biomass fuels creates serious fouling and slagging in conventional boilers. Even with the use of sorbents and other additives, power plants can only fire limited amounts of these fuels in combination with wood. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), US Department of Energy, and the biomass power industry carried out eight full-scale firing tests and several laboratory experiments to study the nature and occurrence of deposits with the goal of increasing the quantities of these biofuels that can be used. This report describes the results of the laboratory and power plant tests that included: tracking and analyzing fuels and deposits by various methods; recording operating conditions; and extensive laboratory testing. The paper describes the occurrence of deposits, fuel and deposit analyses, boiler design and operation, fouling and slagging indicators, and recommendations. 37 refs., 41 figs., 17 tabs.

Micropower impulse radar technology and applications

Description: The LLNL-developed Micropower Impulse Radar (MIR) technology has quickly gone from laboratory concept to embedded circuitry in numerous government and commercial systems in the last few years[l]. The main ideas behind MIR, invented by T. McEwan in the Laser Program, are the generation and detection systems for extremely low- power ultra-wideband pulses in the gigaHertz regime using low-cost components. These ideas, coupled with new antenna systems, timing and radio-frequency (RF) circuitry, computer interfaces, and signal processing, have provided the catalyst for a new generation of compact radar systems. Over the past several years we have concentrated on a number of applications of MIR which address a number of remote-sensing applications relevant to emerging programs in defense, transportation, medical, and environmental research. Some of the past commercial successes have been widely publicized [2] and are only now starting to become available for market. Over 30 patents have been filed and over 15 licenses have been signed on various aspects of the MIR technology. In addition, higher performance systems are under development for specific laboratory programs and government reimbursables. The MIR is an ultra- wideband, range-gated radar system that provides the enabling hardware technology used in the research areas mentioned above. It has numerous performance parameters that can be Selected by careful design to fit the requirements. We have improved the baseline, short- range, MIR system to demonstrate its effectiveness. The radar operates over the hand from approximately I to 4 GHz with pulse repetition frequencies up to 10 MHz. It provides a potential range resolution of I cm at ranges of greater than 20 m. We have developed a suite of algorithms for using MIR for image formation. These algorithms currently support Synthetic aperture and multistate array geometries. This baseline MIR radar imaging system has been used for several programmatic applications.

Multi-canister overpack closure operations location study

Description: The Spent Nuclear Fuel Path Forward Project (SNF Project) has been established to develop engineered methods for the expedited removal of the irradiated uranium fuel from the K East (KE) and K West (KW) Basins. As specified by the SNF Project, the SNF will be removed from the K Basins, conditioned for dry storage and placed in a long term interim storage facility located in the 200 East Area. The SNF primarily consists of Zircaloy-2 clad uranium fuel discharged from the N-Reactor. A small portion of the SNF is Single Pass Reactor (SPR) Fuel, which is aluminum clad uranium fuel. The SNF will be loaded into Multi-Canister Overpacks (MCOs) at the K Basins, transferred to the Cold Vacuum Drying (CVD) facility for initial fuel conditioning, and transported to the Canister Storage Building (CSB) for staging, final fuel conditioning, and dry storage. The MCO is a transportation, conditioning, and storage vessel. The MCO consists of a 24 inch pipe with a welded bottom closure and a top closure that is field welded after the MCO is loaded with SNF. The MCO is handled and transported in the vertical orientation during all operations. Except for operations within the CSB, the MCO is always within the transportation cask which primarily provides radiological shielding and structural protection of the MCO. The MCO closure operations location study provides a relative evaluation of location options at the K Basins and the CVD Facility and recommends that the MCO closure weld be performed, inspected, and repaired at the CVD Facility.

Scientific Basis for Monitored Natural Attenuation and Enhanced Passive Remediation for Chlorinated Solvents - DOE Alternative Project for Technology Acceleration Implementation Plan

Description: The overall Monitored Natural Attenuation and Enhanced Passive Remediation (MNA/EPR) Technology Alternative Project is narrowly focused, providing the scientific and policy support to facilitate implementing appropriate passive cleanup and cost effective monitoring strategies leading to responsible completion of active remediation activities at high risk DOE waste sites. MNA/EPR describe natural processes that mitigate exposure and risk and that are self-sustaining once implemented or require minimal adjustments to maintain functionality. The overall MNA/EPR project effort will be performed as a collaboration between DOE science and operations organizations at the target sites along with regulatory agencies, stakeholders, industry, and universities, as identified in the approved Alternative Project Plan. This plan describes the project initiation activities, individual roles and responsibilities, milestones, and budget for the project. A primary product of this project will be a collaboratively developed MNA/EPR protocol that will facilitate widespread use and acceptance. This technical protocol will be developed in collaboration with regulator agencies as input for regulation updates and guidance documents, as appropriate. This plan describes the project initiation activities, individual roles and responsibilities, milestones, and budget for the project.

AMRNodeElliptic user guide: On rectangular problem domains

Description: This document describes an extension to the Chombo package [CGL+00] for solving elliptic equations using adaptive mesh refinement on multiple levels with node-centered data. See the AMRNodeElliptic design document [McC02] for a description of the algorithms used. Chapter 2 describes the class NodeFArrayBox and functions that use this class to manipulate node-centered data. Interfaces for elliptic equation solvers are described in chapter 3. Some internal classes of the solvers are described in chapter 4. User interfaces for physical boundary conditions are described in chapter 5. The AMRNodeElliptic package requires that Chombo library be installed. See chapter 1 of the Chombo design document [CGL+00] for requirements and installation of Chombo.

Density Prediction of Uranium-6 Niobium Ingots

Description: The densities of uranium-6 niobium (U-Nb) alloys have been compiled from a variety of literature sources such as Y-12 and Rocky Flats datasheets. We also took advantage of the 42 well-pedigreed, homogeneous baseline U-Nb alloys produced under the Enhanced Surveillance Program for density measurements. Even though U-Nb alloys undergo two-phase transitions as the Nb content varies from 0 wt. % to 8 wt %, the theoretical and measured densities vary linearly with Nb content. Therefore, the effect of Nb content on the density was modeled with a linear regression. From this linear regression, a homogeneous ingot of U-6 wt.% Nb would have a density of 17.382 {+-} 0.040 g/cc (95% CI). However, ingots produced at Y-12 are not homogeneous with respect to the Nb content. Therefore, using the 95% confidence intervals, the density of a Y-12 produced ingot would vary from 17.310 {+-} 0.043 g/cc at the center to 17.432 {+-} 0.039 g/cc at the edge. Ingots with larger Nb inhomogeneities will also have larger variances in the density.

MAPPING INDUCED POLARIZATION WITH NATURAL ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELDS FOR EXPLORATION AND RESOURCES CHARACTERIZATION BY THE MINING INDUSTRY

Description: In this first quarter we made an organizational change in the project that should allow us to more easily meet the project milestones. This change consists of designing a new systems that will allow to simplify field operation and reduce survey costs. The new system design has been completed and we are in the process of completing the manufacture and test of the first prototype. Production of the final system for the survey should be completed by end of July. The new acquisition and processing software is in progress and will be ready by the end of July. The new processing software will include the robust processing developed by Larsen and Egbert.

PCR+ In Diesel Fuels and Emissions Research

Description: In past work for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), PCR+ was developed as an alternative methodology for building statistical models. PCR+ is an extension of Principal Components Regression (PCR), in which the eigenvectors resulting from Principal Components Analysis (PCA) are used as predictor variables in regression analysis. The work was motivated by the observation that most heavy-duty diesel (HDD) engine research was conducted with test fuels that had been ''concocted'' in the laboratory to vary selected fuel properties in isolation from each other. This approach departs markedly from the real world, where the reformulation of diesel fuels for almost any purpose leads to changes in a number of interrelated properties. In this work, we present new information regarding the problems encountered in the conventional approach to model-building and how the PCR+ method can be used to improve research on the relationship between fuel characteristics and engine emissions. We also discuss how PCR+ can be applied to a variety of other research problems related to diesel fuels.

Laboratory experiments to simulate CO{sub 2} ocean disposal. Draft technical progress report, August 15, 1995--February 15, 1996

Description: The primary objective of this investigation is to obtain experimental data that can be applied to assess the technical feasibility and the environmental impacts of oceanic containment strategies to limit atmospheric emissions of carbon dioxide from coal and other fossil fuel combustion systems. These strategies exploit the very large storage capacity of the deep ocean. In most systems proposed to date, CO{sub 2} extracted from a combustor is liquefied and transported to the deep ocean via a submerged conduit and discharged, usually as a jet. Hydrodynamic instability induces break-up of the jet into droplets which will be buoyant at depths above 3,000m. Dissolution of the rising droplets may be inhibited by a solid hydrate film that forms on the surface of the droplets. The complex mechanisms of liquid CO{sub 2} jet break-up, droplet dispersion and coalescence, and dissolution in the deep ocean environment are not well understood. The present investigation seeks to address several of the major technical uncertainties by conducting two categories of laboratory tests which will: (1) characterize size spectra and velocities of the dispersed CO{sub 2} phase in the near-field of the atomized jet; and (2) estimate rates of mass transfer from single rising droplets of liquid CO{sub 2} encased in a thin hydrate shell.

Y-12 development organization technical progress report. Part 5 -- Polymers, ceramics and solvents, period ending January 1, 1996

Description: Microwave sintering studies with boron carbide (B{sub 4}C) are being evaluated to compare properties of unidirectionally pressed and sintered microwaved pellets with gelcasting of B{sub 4}C. The particle blend is a 50/50 blend of 1-{micro}m and 0.1-{micro}m using 5 wt% carbon (Thermax{reg_sign}) addition. The large, dual-frequency microwave furnace was used to determine that scaleup of a large number of parts can be processed simultaneously using a microwave furnace. Microwave heat treatment of commercial silicon carbide (SiC) resulted in minimal densification, which is thought to result from the exclusion of liquid-phase eutectic, producing sintering aids.

Safety evaluation for packaging (onsite) product removal can containers

Description: Six Product Removal (PR) Cans and Containers are located within the Plutonium Finishing Plant. Each can is expected to contain a maximum of 3 g of residual radioactive material, consisting mainly of plutonium isotopes. The PR Can Containers were previously authorized by HNF-SD-TP-SEP-064, Rev. 0 (Boettger 1997), for the interarea transport of up to 3 g of plutonium. The purpose of this safety evaluation for packaging is to allow the transport of six PR Cans with their Containers from the Plutonium Finishing Plant to the 233 S Evaporator Facility. This safety evaluation for packaging is authorized for use until April 29, 1999, or until the shipment is made, whichever happens first.

Technical basis for implementing the use of the PCM-1B for personnel releases at tank farms

Description: Currently, Tanks Farms Transition Projects require personnel to perform a whole body survey with portable survey instrumentation prior to entering an automated counting system capable of performing a whole body survey. This practice is redundant since automated whole body survey devices are, in most cases, more sensitive and are less likely to be used incorrectly than portable instrumentation. Additionally, Article 221.2 of the Hanford Site Radiological Control Manual (HSRCM-1) states ``Monitoring for contamination should be performed using frisking equipment that under laboratory conditions can detect total contamination of at least the values specified in Table 2-2.`` Based on this criteria implementing the use of an automated whole body survey device would save significant time, money and reduce the current crowding and potential loss of contamination control that now occurs during peak times at step off pads. This document describes implementation process for applying PCM-1B instruments to perform personnel release surveys.
