A Study Of Lu-Pitch Name Signification: A Translation with Commentary

Description: The purpose of this thesis is to provide translation of documents on lu from two primary sources for a study of the theory of ,lu, with the main focus on the interpretation and the signification attached to each of the twelve lu-pitch names. To establish the background information of the lu-10 system, an explanation of its acoustical properties is first presented. Based on the most important and widely used tonal system in ancient China -- the san-fen-sun-i system, the illustration is provided… more

Install Waste Heat Recovery Systems for Fuel-Fired Furnaces (English/Chinese) (Fact Sheet)

Description: Chinese translation of ITP fact sheet about installing Waste Heat Recovery Systems for Fuel-Fired Furnaces. For most fuel-fired heating equipment, a large amount of the heat supplied is wasted as exhaust or flue gases. In furnaces, air and fuel are mixed and burned to generate heat, some of which is transferred to the heating device and its load. When the heat transfer reaches its practical limit, the spent combustion gases are removed from the furnace via a flue or stack. At this point, these … more

Reactivity of Biogenic Manganese Oxide for Metal Sequestration and Photochemistry: Computational Solid State Physics Study

Description: Many microbes, including both bacteria and fungi, produce manganese (Mn) oxides by oxidizing soluble Mn(II) to form insoluble Mn(IV) oxide minerals, a kinetically much faster process than abiotic oxidation. These biogenic Mn oxides drive the Mn cycle, coupling it with diverse biogeochemical cycles and determining the bioavailability of environmental contaminants, mainly through strong adsorption and redox reactions. This mini review introduces recent findings based on quantum mechanical density… more

Reduce Air Infiltration in Furnaces (English/Chinese) (Fact Sheet)

Description: Chinese translation of the Reduce Air Infiltration in Furnaces fact sheet. Provides suggestions on how to improve furnace energy efficiency. Fuel-fired furnaces discharge combustion products through a stack or a chimney. Hot furnace gases are less dense and more buoyant than ambient air, so they rise, creating a differential pressure between the top and the bottom of the furnace. This differential, known as thermal head, is the source of a natural draft or negative pressure in furnaces and boil… more

Beam Size Measurement by Optical Diffraction Radiation and Laser System for Compton Polarimeter

Description: Beam diagnostics is an essential constituent of any accelerator, so that it is named as "organs of sense" or "eyes of the accelerator." Beam diagnostics is a rich field. A great variety of physical effects or physical principles are made use of in this field. Some devices are based on electro-magnetic influence by moving charges, such as faraday cups, beam transformers, pick-ups; Some are related to Coulomb interaction of charged particles with matter, such as scintillators,… more

[China National Football Association game flag]

Description: Photograph of a flag from the Bob Kap Collection, held by UNT Special Collections. It is from the game between the Dallas Tornado team and the China National Football Association's Union Team. The second "A" is missing from the word association. There is Chinese writing at the top of the flag and a logo in the center that reads "CNFA" over a yellow football design with the flag of the Republic of China on it. The date of the game is also at the bottom. "20 Dec. 1967". The bottom of the flag goe… more

Steel II

Description: Recording of Andy Birtwistle's Steel II. This work celebrates and mourns the failure of the Modernist dream represented by poet, Geoffrey Bridson's, 1937 broadcast: "Steel: An Industrial Symphony". It also captures the sound of an optimistic, heroic Modernist in the 21st century and how the new century would sound in contrast to the last.

Kung Fu

Description: Recording of Phil Archer's Kung Fu. This piece is composed entirely of source sounds taken from Chinese Kung Fu films and adopts the values and characteristics associated with these films. The composer's goal while writing this work was, while incorporating technique and valves commonly associated with electroacoustic music, to avoid or subvert obvious clichés of the genre.
