Production of Pebble-Type Fuel Elements

Description: A capillary-drop method of producing spherical shapes of brittle materials less than 0.l00 inch in diameter was developed. It appears to be a feasible means for producing large numbers of pebble-tyne fuel element cores. Coating of pebble-type fuel element cores by the coating-pan technique, though not adequately developed, showed promise. (auth)

Dripsody

Description: Recording of Hugh le Caine's Dripsody. It is an study for variable speed recorder. It was composed in one night. Le Caine used a recording of a drop of water falling into a bucket, which he re- recorded different speeds, obtaining the heights of a pentatonic scale. Using 25 connectors and the variable speed tape recorder, it produced thousands of sound effects. Dripsody begins with the original sound of the water drop, repetition loop. Shortly afterwards, by adding more loops, the density of th… more

Nature of atmospheric dust. Progress report to January 15, 1955

Description: Optical microscopic examination of air- and rain-borne dust shows most of the particles to be less than one micron in diameter. Electron microscopic examination of the same dust shows predominantly clusters of particles whose individual diameters are in the range 200 to 1000 A. The residue obtained by filtering rain water through a millipore filter is found to be slightly radioactive in more than half the cases observed.

GRAIN REFINEMENT PRODUCED BY AN ALPHA PHASE ANNEAL OF BETA PHASE HEAT TREATED AND WATER QUENCHED URANIUM

Description: During an experiment involving alpha phase annealing (at 610 to 655 deg C for 5 and 10 min) of beta-quenched uranium, it was determined that the relatively coarse, irregular shaped grains (0.08 to 0.150 mm in diameter) in the beta-quenched structure, were replaced by fine equiaxed grains (0.04 to 0.09 mm in diameter). Separation of Zirconium & Hafnium : Proposal for Construction & Operation of Zirconium Production Plant

Description: Abstract: A re-evaluation of the cost of producing essentially hafnium free zirconium as zirconium oxide at a rate of 150,000-200,000 pounds zirconium per year by solvent extraction of the metal thiocyanates in a permanent plant has been made. Using part of the present temporary facilities, the cost, with five year amortization of the plant, will be $3.15 per pound zirconium. A by-product of the mixed oxides of hafnium and zirconium, having at least fifty percent hafnium and perhaps as high as … more
