Correlation of exhaust-valve temperatures with engine operating conditions and valve design

Description: Report presenting a theory regarding engine-cooling variables from a previous report, which was used as a basis for the development of a semi-empirical equation to correlate exhaust-valve temperature with engine conditions. Consolidation and shaping of boron ; summary of previous work

Description: From abstract: "The deposit on the rods is in the form of a brittle uneven tube which is cracked off and subsequently pulverized to a 200-mesh powder. This report is chiefly concerned with methods of consolidating this powder and shaping it into forms required, though it also discusses to some extent other methods of shaping boron or born-rich materials."

Precipitation of Thorium Oxalate from Nitric Acid Solutions

Description: Introduction. It has been known for a long time that thorium is precipitated by oxalic acid in acid solutions, but a survey of the literature showed no study of the limits of the acidity and oxalic acid excess which yield quantitative results. V. I. Spitzin reports on the solubility of thorium oxalate in varying concentrations of several acids, but the effect of an excess oxalic acid is not included. Since solutions are sometimes presented for analysis that contain more than the recommended ā€¦ more

Recovery of D2O and UO2F2 by Distillation

Description: Technical report describing the purification and separation by distillation of UO2F2 from D2O. In the experiment which is discussed 2,129.6 lbs of UO2F2 were dissolved in 6,605 lbs of D2O. The average isotopic purity of the D2O decreased during the distillation from 99.77% to 99.73%. The dissolved impurities were less than those present originally in the heavy water.

A Study of Thorium Peroxide Sulfate

Description: Abstract. Thorium peroxide was precipitated from thorium nitrate solutions containing varying amounts of sulfate ion and of hydrogen ion. The washed solids were analyzed both wet and dry. Analyses were made for thorium, peroxide oxygen, sulfate, nitrate, and water contents. X-ray powder photographs of the dried samples by W.H. Zachariasen showed the presence of only two phases. When precipitated from high sulfuric acid, the solid phase was isomorphous with Th(OO)SO4.3H20. More weakly acid ā€¦ more

Some Flight Measurements on Pressure Distribution During Tail Buffeting

Description: Report presenting pressure-distribution measurements obtained from the horizontal tail surfaces of the Curtiss P-40K airplane during low-speed pull-ups to abrupt stall in which tail buffeting was experienced. The chordwise load distributions during buffeting are similar to those experienced during angle-of-attack changes. The location of the stall and frequency of stall disturbances are also described.

Use of Variable-Ratio Geared Tabs to Improve Stick-Force Characteristics in Turning Flight

Description: Report discussing the use of variable-ratio geared tabs with an experimental elevator to improve stick-force characteristics in turning flight. The stick forces with the tabs were found to be satisfactory for a variety of center-of-gravity ranges. The ability of pilots to use the controls is also described.

Flight Investigation of Boundary-Layer and Profile-Drag Characteristics of Smooth Wing Sections of a P-47D Airplane

Description: "In Mach range of 0.25 - 0.69, boundary-layer measurements were made on upper wing surface at 25% semi-span, pressure-distribution measurements made on upper surface at 63% semi-span, and wake surveys made at 63% semi-span. The minimum profile-drag coefficient of 0.0062 was indicated for smooth section at 63% semi-span. Critical mach number was exceeded by 0.04, but no compressibility shocks appeared. In slipstream, boundary layer transition occurred as far back as 20% chord on upper surface atā€¦ more

Comparison of fixed-stabilizer, adjustable- stabilizer and all-movable horizontal tails

Description: Report presenting an analysis to compare longitudinal stability and control characteristics obtained with a conventional fixed-stabilizer, an adjustable-stabilizer, and an all-movable horizontal tail. The tail-area requirements, control forces required in the critical landing condition, static margin, control-force gradients in a dive recovery, and elevator-free stability are investigated.

Knock-limited power outputs from a CFR engine using internal coolants 2: six aliphatic amines

Description: Report presenting an investigation to determine the knock-limited performance of AN-F-28, Amendment-2, fuel in a DCFR engine when water solutions of the following aliphatic amines were added as internal coolants: monomethylamine, dimethylamine, ethylendiamine, diethylamine, triethylamine, and butylamine. Performance Comparison of Two Deep Inducers as Separate Components and in Combination With an Impeller

Description: Report presenting testing of two deep inducers as separate components and in combination with an impeller as part of an investigation to correlate design requirements of inducers and impellers. Both inducers, when tested as separate components at a speed corresponding to an impeller tip speed of 1000 feet per second, had a peak adiabatic efficiency of approximately 82 percent. Results regarding the inducers as separate components, inducer-impeller units, and a comparison of inducer performance ā€¦ more

Performance Effect of Fully Shrouding a Centrifugal Supercharger Impeller

Description: Report presenting a program of tests to determine the effect of an integral front shroud on the performance characteristics of a centrifugal supercharger impeller. The impellers tested included a modification of a commercial semishrouded impeller and a fully shrouded impeller, which was the same as the semishrouded one except for an integral front shroud.

Table of Interplanar Spacings for Crystal-Structure Determinations by X-Ray Diffraction With Molybdenum, Copper, Cobalt, Iron, and Chromium Radiations

Description: "For a simple diffraction pattern, the time required to calculate interplanar distances from measurements of the pattern is not excessive. If more than a few lines are present, however, or if several patterns are to be studied, it is very advantageous to have available a table giving interplanar spacings directly in terms of the linear measurements made on the film of the lines appearing on the diffraction pattern. The preparation of the table given here was undertaken when the expansion of resā€¦ more

Correlation of Exhaust-Valve Temperatures With Engine Operating Conditions and Valve Design in an Air-Cooled Cylinder

Description: "A semiempirical equation correlating exhaust-valve temperatures with engine operating conditions and exhaust-valve design has been developed. The correlation is based on the theory correlating engine and cooling variables developed in a previous NACA report. In addition to the parameters ordinarily used in the correlating equation, a term is included in the equation that is a measure of the resistance of the complex heat-flow paths between the crown of the exhaust valve and a point on the outsā€¦ more
