Linear Theory of Boundary Effects in Open Wind Tunnels With Finite Jet Lengths

Description: "In the first part, the boundary conditions for an open wind tunnel (incompressible flow) are examined with special reference to the effects of the closed entrance and exit sections. In the second part, solutions are derived for four types of two-dimensional open tunnels, including one in which the pressures on the two free surfaces are not equal. In the third part, a general method is given for calculating the boundary effect in an open circular wind tunnel of finite jet length" (p. 509).

Performance of J33-A-23 Turbojet-Engine Compressor, Part 1, Over-All Performance Characteristics of Compressor with 17-Blade Impeller

Description: "The production-model 333-A-23 turbojet-engine compressor with a 17-blade impeller was operated at ambient and 0 F inlet temperatures and at inlet pressures of 14 and 5 inches mercury absolute for equivalent impeller speeds from 6000 to 12,750 rpm. The results of this investigation are compared with those of the 533-A-21 compressor. At the design equivalent speed of 11,750 rpm the maximum pressure ratio was 4.39" (p. 1).

Calculated condenser performance for a steam turbine power plant for aircraft

Description: Report presenting calculations to determine the effect of several operating conditions on the performance of condensers for steam-turbine power plants. The analysis covered a range of turbine-inlet pressures and turbine-outlet pressures for various condenser cooling-air pressure drops, flight speeds, and altitudes. Results regarding steam-cycle performance, effect of turbine-outlet pressure on condenser performance, effect of cooling-air pressure drop on condenser performance, effect of turbine-inlet temperature on condenser performance, and power-plant-weight estimates are provided.

Longitudinal-Stability Investigation of High-Lift and Stall-Control Devices on a 52 Degree Sweptback Wing With and Without Fuselage and Horizontal Tail at a Reynolds Number of 6.8 X 10 (Exp 6)

Description: Contains low-speed longitudinal stability characteristics of a 52 degree sweptback wing of aspect ratio 2.88, taper ratio 0.625, and NACA 64 (sub 1)-112 airfoil sections normal to the 0.282-chord line, in combination with split flaps, leading-edge flaps, and upper-surface fences. Low-wing and midwing-fuselage aerodynamic characteristics are presented with and without a horizontal tail at various vertical locations. Tests were conducted at a Reynolds number of 6.8 x 10(exp 6).

Longitudinal Trim and Tumble Characteristics of a 0.057-Scale Model of the Chance Vought XF7U-1 Airplane, TED NO. NACA DE311

Description: Based on results of longitudinal trim and tumble tests of a 0.057-scale model of the Chance Vought XF7U-1 airplane, the following conclusions regarding the trim and tumble characteristics of the airplane have been drawn: 1. The airplane will not trim at any unusual or uncontrolled angles of attack. 2. The airplane will not tumble with the center of gravity located forward of 24 percent of the mean aerodynamic chord. When the center of gravity is located at 24 percent of the mean aerodynamic chord and slats are extended and elevators are deflected full up, the airplane may tumble if given an external positive pitching moment.

Ditching Tests of a 1/20-Scale Model of the Northrop B-35 Airplane

Description: "Tests of a 1/20-scale dynamically similar model of the Northrop B-35 airplane were made to study its ditching characteristics. The model was ditched in calm water at the Langley tank no. 2 monorail. Various landing attitudes, speeds,and conditions of damage were simulated during the investigation. The ditching characteristics were determined by visual observation and from motion-picture records and time-history acceleration records" (p. 1).

Flight Test of NACA FR-1-B, a Low-Acceleration Rocket-Propelled Vehicle for Transonic Flutter Research

Preliminary Tests in the Supersonic Sphere

Description: "This report presents preliminary data obtained in the Langley supersonic sphere. The supersonic sphere is essentially a whirling mechanism enclosed in a steel shell which can be filled with either air or Freon gas. The test models for two-dimensional study are of propeller form having the same plan form and diameter but varying only in the airfoil shape and thickness ratio. Torque coefficients for the 16-006, 65-110, and the 15 percent thick ellipse models are presented, as well as pressure distributions on a circular-arc supersonic airfoil section having a maximum thickness of 10 percent chord at the 1/3-chord position" (p. 1).

The NACA 2000-horsepower propeller dynamometer and tests at high speed of an NACA 10-(3)(08)-03 two-blade propeller

Description: This paper contains a detailed description of a 2,000-horsepower propeller dynamometer used to make wind-tunnel tests of a two-blade NACA 10-(3)(08)-03 propeller for a range of blade angles from 20 degrees to 55 degrees at airspeeds up to 500 miles per hour. The results of these tests and comparisons with results obtained from a theoretical analysis and from previous tests made in other wind tunnels are presented.

Excitation Curves of C12(p,pn)C11 and B11(p,n)C11 up to 32 MeV.

Description: The reaction C{sup 12} (p,pn)C{sup 11} which has been studied by McMillan, Chubb and Miller for energies up to 100 Mev is an example of a reaction whose high energy behavior cannot be explained by a compound nucleus process. The purpose of the study was to investigate this reaction at the high resolution possible with the Berkeley linear accelerator near the excitation threshold. The excitation curve was obtained by stacking specially molded polystyrene (composition C{sub n}H{sub n}) foils of high uniformity and bombarding them in the proton beam. The resultant activity was then counted on a Geiger counter in standard geometry. The resultant curve is shown in Figure 1. An immediately evident feature is the sharp threshold of the reaction. The second derivative curve, illustrated in Figure 2, of the excitation shows an RMS width of 270 kV, the theoretical straggling width due to the foils of 170 kv, and the remaining width in accordance with the energy spread of approximately {+-} 100 kv half width of the linear accelerator. The data therefore are compatible with a sharp threshold for this reaction. This curve, incidentally, furnishes independent evidence as to the energy homogeneity of the linear accelerator beam.

P Division monthly report, November 1948

Description: This progress report discusses activities at the P Division for the month of November 1948. All piles operated at 275 megawatts (MW) throughout the month except for outages listed under Area Activities in this report and except that F Pile operated at a reduced level during the first half of the month. This operation at reduced level was incident to the leaking process tube reported last month. A total of 81.4 tons of metal was discharged from the piles during the month. The 300 Area canned a total of 150 tons of acceptable slugs during the month to establish a new production record. On November 29 the operating schedule for the Melt Plant was changed from a three-shift to a two-shift, six-day week schedule. The backlog of material largely had been worked off and the new schedule is adequate for processing the current accumulation of scrap.

The trend of contamination in the air, Columbia River, rain, sanitary water, vegetation, and wastes, at the Hanford Works and vicinity for the period October, November, December 1947

Description: This report summarizes the contamination observed at the Hanford Works and vicinity for the period October, November, and December, 1947. Trend charts showing trend of contamination for the various sampling locations are only included where a true trend can be established for the three month period; a thorough analysis of all trends will be considered in detail in the annual report from this section. The report is divided into the following topic sections: Meteorological -- dissolving data; beta contamination in the air and the radiation levels in air; alpha and beta contamination in the Columbia River; beta contamination in the rain and snow; alpha and beta contamination in drinking water; beta contamination on vegetation; and alpha and beta contamination in Hanford Wastes. An appraisal and review of all the results is considered in detail for each section. Statistical analysis is used whenever possible to determine significant values and differences in levels of contamination measured.
