A Warning on Fission Resonance Intergrals -- Caveat Utor!

Description: Abstract: A common error is made in defining the resonance integral in most tabulations and handbooks. Although it has a minor effect on the capture resonance integral and on the fission resonance integral for the fissile nuclides, it leads to gross errors in the fission resonance integral for the fertile nuclides. The errors in the fission resonance integral for fertile nuclides of the elements from thorium through curium in the ENDF/B-V library will be presented. Let the user beware.

Snake Deplorizing Resonance Study in RHIC

Description: Snake depolarizing resonances due to the imperfect cancellation of the accumulated perturbations on the spin precession between snakes were observed at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). During the RHIC 2005 and 2006 polarized proton runs, we mapped out the spectrum of odd order snake resonance at Q{sub y} = 7/10. Here, Q, is the beam vertical betatron tune. We also studied the beam polarization after crossing the 7/10th resonance as a function of resonance crossing rate. This paper re… more

Capture in the 1. 15-keV iron resonance

Description: The 1.15-keV resonance in iron is important to reactors in that a major part of the iron capture integral is due to this one resonance. This resonance is also a good test case for capture gamma-ray detectors, which are meant to have an efficiency independent of gamma-ray energy spectra, because this resonance has an unusually hard spectrum and other iron resonances do not. There have been severe discrepancies among different groups who have measured the capture area and transmission of this res… more

The IPNS resonance detector spectrometer

Description: In the resonance detector method of neutron spectroscopy, a foil is placed in the scattered neutron beam and scattered neutrons having the resonance energy are detected by detecting the capture gammas resulting from the resonance absorption of the neutrons. A prototype resonance detector spectrometer called the Electron Volt Spectrometer (EVS) has been built and operated. The instrument is described, the current understanding of the background of the instrument is discussed, software developed … more

Integral data analysis for resonance parameters determination

Description: Neutron time-of-flight experiments have long been used to determine resonance parameters. Those resonance parameters have then been used in calculations of integral quantities such as Maxwellian averages or resonance integrals, and results of those calculations in turn have been used as a criterion for acceptability of the resonance analysis. However, the calculations were inadequate because covariances on the parameter values were not included in the calculations. In this report an effort to c… more

Improved resonance reaction rate calculation for lattice physics subsystem

Description: The resonance capture calculations of the HAMMER System and HAMBUR System are derived from a consistent statement of the integral slowing down equation and definitions of the resonance integral. The assumptions made in these treatments are explicitly stated, and and an attempt is made to estimate the possible error in the resonance integral arising from these assumptions. This analysis is made to pin-point those parts of the calculation that can be improved and updated. Based on the analysis of… more

Correlation technique for resonance calculations

Description: A correlation technique was developed to make the accuracy of complex and long-running resonance treatments available in fast, routine calculations. The technique is based on the subgroup method and is used to generate group-averaged resonance reaction rates. By fitting the correlation to several detailed auxiliary resonance calculations, a set of weights (the Lebesgue measure) is obtained. The weights may then be applied to a wider range of new cases. Use of the correlation technique results i… more

Co-Funding for the Conference on Magnetic Resonance in Biological Systems

Description: The XXIst International Conference on Magnetic Resonance in Biological Systems (ICMRBS 2005), '60th anniversary of the discovery of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance,' was held between 16 and 21 January 2005 in Hyderabad, India. The meeting focused on a broad range of magnetic resonance methods as applied to studies of biological processes related to human health. The biennial ICMRBS has become the major venue for discussion of advances in nuclear and electron magnetic resonance (NMR & EMR/EPR) studie… more

NQR-NMR studies of higher alcohol synthesis Cu-Co catalysts

Description: The primary objective of the project is to examine the relations between the catalytic and magnetic properties of the copper-cobalt higher alcohol synthesis catalysts. We have undertaken to investigate the magnetic character by studying the Nuclear Quadrupole resonance of copper and (Zerofield) Nuclear Magnetic Resonance of cobalt in copper cobalt catalysts.

Measurement and Correction of Third Resonance Driving Term in the RHIC

Description: To further improve the luminosity in polarized proton operation of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, correction of the horizontal two-third resonance at store is desirable. The long-lasting coherent beam oscillations, produced by the AC dipole, are used to measure 3Q,'s resonance driving term h{sub 30000} through the analysis of turn-by-turn beam position data with the algorithm outlined by J. Bengtsson. The resonance driving term h30000 can be compensated with the 12 arc chromatic sextupole… more

Neutron cross sections and Doppler effect of the 1. 056 eV resonance in /sup 240/Pu

Description: /sup 240/Pu possesses a value for the dilute resonance capture integral that is mostly due to the resonance at 1.056 eV. It is important to the neutron economy of a reactor to know the accurate size of the resonance, i.e., GAMMA/sub n/ and GAMMA/sub ..gamma../. The HFBR fast chopper facility has been used to make a determination of these resonance parameters. In this low energy region the intensity and resolution of the instrument are adequate for precise measurements.

Eikonal expansion of the Vlasov-Maxwell equations valid near cyclotron resonance

Description: In the usual formulations of geometrical optics, the physics of the medium enters the equations through a conductivity tensor operator sigma. An essential assumption in the subsequent expansion is that the magnitude of sigma/sup H/, the Hermitian part of sigma, is much smaller than sigma/sup A/, the anti-Hermitian part. In a finite temperature plasma with ..omega../sub pe/ approx. absolute value ..cap omega../sub e/, this condition is always violated sufficiently close to cyclotron resonance, e… more

Emittance growths in resonance crossing at FFAGs

Description: Scaling laws of the emittance growth for a beam crossing the 6th-order systematic space-charge resonances and the random-octupole driven 4th-order resonance are obtained by numerical multi-particle simulations. These laws can be important in setting the minimum acceleration rate and maximum tolerable resonance strength for the design of non-scaling fixed-field alternating gradient accelerators.
