Control-Motion Studies of the PBM-3 Flying Boat in Abrupt Pull-Ups

Description: Report presenting a control-motion study in flight that is part of series covering a range of types and sizes of modern airplanes. This particular one involves the PBM-3 flying boat, which is equipped with a control mechanism typical of the cable-type systems in large transport, cargo, or bomber airplanes as well as those employed in flying boats. The elasticity of the elevator control system of the PBM-3 was such to limit the obtainable acceleration to about 3g for center-of-gravity positions … more

Tensile Properties of a Sillimanite Refractory at Elevated Temperatures

Description: Report presenting an investigation of the tensile strength, stress-to-rupture characteristics, and modulus of elasticity of a sillimanite refractory at various temperatures. The tensile strength varied greatly with temperature.

Strength and Creep Characteristics of Ceramic Bodies at Elevated Temperatures

Description: Report presenting the results of a total of 109 tests to evaluate certain characteristics of six ceramic oxide bodies for high-temperature applications, especially as turbine blades. The primary emphasis was placed on determinations of strength and resistance to creep under tensile strength at elevated temperatures. Results regarding step tests, short-time tensile tests, stress-rupture test results, modulus of elasticity, correlation of absorption and extension, stress-temperature-time effects,… more

The Influence of Plastic Deformation and of Heat Treatment on Poisson's Ratio for 18:8 Chromium-Nickel Steel

Description: Note presenting an effective value of Poisson's ratio for 18:8 Cr-Ni steel computed from values of tensile and torsional moduli of elasticity obtianed in earlier investigations by use of an appropriate formula.

Comparison of over-all impact loads obtained during seaplane landing tests with loads predicted by hydrodynamic theory

Description: Report presenting a landing investigation with a flying boat with a conventional configuration to determine the applicability of hydrodynamic impact theory in defining full-scale water impact loads. The results indicated that in addition to chine flare and angular rotation, there are many other factors that may affect overall load, such as elasticity effects, sustained pressures on the area behind the chine, and the effect of variation of wing lift during impact.

The Stability of Isotropic or Orthotopic Cylinders or Flat or Curved Panels, Between and Across Stiffeners, With Any Edge Conditions Between Hinged and Fixed, Under Any Combination of Compression and Shear

Description: Note presenting a theory that is meant to include all factors that are commonly present when determining the stability of isotropic or orthotropic cylinders or flat or curved panels under a variety of characteristics. The theory is based on the energy method and involves a number of approximations, some rather rough. It is a theory of elastic stability and, like other theories, assumes a construction with no imperfections of shape or elasticity.

The Buckling of a Uniformly Compressed Plate with Intermediate Supports

Description: This problem has been selected from the mathematical theory of elasticity. We consider a rectangular plate of thickness h, length a, and width b. The plate is subjected to compressive forces. These forces act in the neutral plane and give the plate a tendency to buckle. However, this problem differs from other plate problems in that it is assumed that there are two intermediate supports located on the edges of the plate parallel to the compressive forces.

Tests on Thin-Walled Celluloid Cylinders to Determine the Interaction Curves Under Combined Bending, Torsion, and Compression or Tension Loads

Description: Note presenting a two part report on cylinder; one is on the modulus of electricity of celluloid sheet and the effect of temperature change on the value of the modulus of elasticity, while the other gives the results of tests on a considerable number of thin-walled, circular celluloid cylinders of several lengths, diameters, and wall thicknesses.

The Elastic Constants for Wrought Aluminum Alloys

Description: "There are several constants which have been devised as numerical representations of the behavior of metals under the action of loadings which stress the metal within the range of elastic action. Some of these constants, such as Young's modulus of elasticity in tension and compression, shearing modulus of elasticity, and Poisson's ratio, are regularly used in engineering calculations. Precise tests and experience indicate that these elastic constants are practically unaffected by many of the fa… more
