The Relative Effectiveness of the Inductive-Deductive and the Deductive-Descriptive Methods in the Teaching of College Zoology

Description: This study was concerned with making a comparative analysis of the relative effectiveness of two teaching methods in increasing students' (a) knowledge and understanding of principles, (b) ability in critical thinking, and (c) science reasoning and understanding in an introductory college zoology course. The two methods were (a) a laboratory-centered inductive-deductive method and (b) the more commonly found deductive-descriptive method organized as a large lecture section with smaller laboratory sections.

Harmful and Beneficial Mammals of the Arid Interior, With Special Reference to the Carson and Humboldt Valleys, Nevada

Description: "Large tracts of arid desert are now being reclaimed and converted into arable land, rich in agricultural possibilities. Crops, trees, live stock, poultry, and ditch banks in this reclaimed territory suffer from the depredations of certain mammals, and the farmers, many of whom are from remote localities, are not always able to discriminate between friends and foes; nor are they always acquainted with cheap and effective methods of destroying the noxious kinds. The report comprises a brief account of the commoner mammals of the region, with special reference to their economic status and the best means of destroying the noxious species, and has been prepared as a practical aid to the ranchmen of the arid interior." -- p. 2. Among the animal discussed are squirrels, chipmunks, various types of mice, muskrats, rats, gophers, rabbits, bobcats, desert foxes, coyotes, skunks, badgers, weasels, minks, otters, and bats.

Singularities and Closed String Tachyons

Description: A basic problem in gravitational physics is the resolution of spacetime singularities where general relativity breaks down. The simplest such singularities are conical singularities arising from orbifold identifications of flat space, and the most challenging are spacelike singularities inside black holes (and in cosmology). Topology changing processes also require evolution through classically singular spacetimes. I briefly review how a phase of closed string tachyon condensate replaces, and helps to resolve, basic singularities of each of these types. Finally I discuss some interesting features of singularities arising in the small volume limit of compact negatively curved spaces and the emerging zoology of spacelike singularities.
