Scaling Breakdown: A Signature of Aging

Description: In this article, the authors prove that the Lévy walk is characterized by bilinear scaling. This effect mirrors the existence of a form of aging that does not require the adoption of nonstationary conditions.

A random walk version of Robbins' problem: small horizon

Description: This article considers an analogous problem in which the observed random variables are the steps of a symmetric random walk. Assuming continuously distributed step sizes, it describes the optimal stopping rules for the cases n = 2 and n = 3 in two versions of the problem: a "full information" version in which the actual steps of the random walk are disclosed to the decision maker; and a "partial information" version in which only the relative ranks of the positions taken by the random walk are … more

Synchronous Chaos, Chaotic Walks, and Characterization of Chaotic States by Lyapunov Spectra

Description: Four aspects of the dynamics of continuous-time dynamical systems are studied in this work. The relationship between the Lyapunov exponents of the original system and the Lyapunov exponents of induced Poincare maps is examined. The behavior of these Poincare maps as discriminators of chaos from noise is explored, and the possible Poissonian statistics generated at rarely visited surfaces are studied.

Influence of Underlying Random Walk Types in Population Models on Resulting Social Network Types and Epidemiological Dynamics

Description: Epidemiologists rely on human interaction networks for determining states and dynamics of disease propagations in populations. However, such networks are empirical snapshots of the past. It will greatly benefit if human interaction networks are statistically predicted and dynamically created while an epidemic is in progress. We develop an application framework for the generation of human interaction networks and running epidemiological processes utilizing research on human mobility patterns and… more

Optimal Strategies for Stopping Near the Top of a Sequence

Description: In Chapter 1 the classical secretary problem is introduced. Chapters 2 and 3 are variations of this problem. Chapter 2, discusses the problem of maximizing the probability of stopping with one of the two highest values in a Bernoulli random walk with arbitrary parameter p and finite time horizon n. The optimal strategy (continue or stop) depends on a sequence of threshold values (critical probabilities) which has an oscillating pattern. Several properties of this sequence have been proved by Dr… more

[Photograph of a couple on the San Antonio River Walk]

Description: Photograph of a couple walking down the San Antonio River Walk. They walk towards the camera, the river to their right. The woman stands on the left and wears a short-sleeved dress. She has a purse over one shoulder. The man wears a wide-brimmed hat, a long-sleeved shirt, and dark pants. Two men stand behind the couple, further down the paved walkway, which curves sharply to the right. Stone retaining walls and a landscaped grassy area fill the background. Low-hanging, leafy tree limbs hang dow… more
