Investigation of Uranium Polymorphs

Description: The UO3-water system is complex and has not been fully characterized, even though these species are common throughout the nuclear fuel cycle. As an example, most production schemes for UO3 result in a mixture of up to six or more different polymorphic phases, and small differences in these conditions will affect phase genesis that ultimately result in measureable changes to the end product. As a result, this feature of the UO3-water system may be useful as a means for determining process histor… more

Identification of Slag Constituents from Uranium Metal Production Bombs

Description: Abstract: "X-ray and microscopic examination of slags from uranium metal production bombs which gave good and bad yields in the plant at St. Louis have indicated the significance of uranium oxide formation. Apparently the oxide (UO2) results from reaction of the UF4 with linear material, particularly with moisture in the liner."

CONSTITUTION OF LOW CARBON U-C ALLOYS

Description: (((Abstract unscannable)))<><DSN>13:014503<ABS>Thc Nb-O equilibrium system was determined by metallographic examination of arc-cast alloys made ot electron-gun-refined Nb metal and special purity Nb/sub 2/O/sub 5/. Two intermediate oxides. NbO and NbO/sub 2/, melt without decomposition at 1945 C and 1915 C, respectively. Eutectic reactions exist between Nb and NbO at 1915 C and between NbO and NbO/sub 2/ at 1810 C . Experimental evidence supports a peritectic reaction between NbO/sub 2/ and Nb/… more

National Uranium Resource Evaluation: Ashton Quadrangle, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming

Description: From Abstract: "The Ashton Quadrangle, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming, was evaluated to identify and delineate areas containing environments favorable for uranium deposits, using criteria developed for the National Uranium Resource Evaluation program. Aerial radiometric data were evaluated, and anomalies were examined in the field. Fourteen uranium occurrences were noted in the study area."

Annihilation of Nuclei by Displacement Spikes

Description: At an Octcber, 1957 meeting between USAEC, AECL, and Bettis personnel, the theoretical aspects of the radiation effects on the gamma red and alpha + gamma /sub 2/ transformation in U-Nb alloys were discussed. A theoretical model is presented which involves the annihilation of nuclei of the new phase by the action of displacement spikes. (W.D.M.)
