The Conqueror Worm

Description: Recording of Krysztof Knittel's The Conqueror Worm. The music structure of this composition depends on the word structure of the poem of the same title written by Edgar Allan Poe. Yttringar (utterances)

Description: Recording of Åke Parmerud's "Yttringar (utterances)." Form and material derived from the Fibbonacci-series. One of the goals of the piece is to avoid the regular behavior of instruments and electroacoustic sounds as clearly separated entities by creating rapid "shadowings" between the tape-part and the live-part. The piece is performed with the conductor hearing a separate channel click-track in a head-phoneset, enabling him to keep in perfect sync with the tape-part.

Description: Recording of Eugeniusz Rudnik's Moulin Diabolique" ("Devilish Mill"). Droite, hommage à Le Corbusier

Description: Recording of Denis Lorrain's Droite, hommage à Le Corbusier. This piece uses ten basic materials whose durations are fixed in the range of 5-30 seconds and marked by percussive strikes. There are two free sequences that incorporate trombone and vibraphone. The piece is elaborated on by simple instrumental sounds and reading of texts.

Description: Recording of Chris Chafe's "Marienbad" performed by Ann Witherall, Daniel Kobialka, and Willy Winant. Iterum Meditemur

Description: Recording of Mayako Kubo's Iterum Meditemur for trombone and tape. The tape was produced in the electronic music studio of the Hochschule für Musik in Wien. Included in the sounds of the tape are wind chimes, bells, and human voice which reads reports from a newspaper printed in 1941 in Columbus, Ohio USA. The text for the trombone player is from the Japanese author Kazumi Takahaschi, partially altered by the composer It was composed from September to November 1978 in Vienna.

Wondrous Love

An Investigation of the Verbal Description of Trombone Tone Quality With Respect to Selected Attributes of Sound

Description: The purpose of this study was to determine the physical elements which experienced trombonists associate with selected descriptors in characterizing the tone quality of that instrument. Stimuli sampled from live trombone tones and synthesized into musical phrases represented 17 variations in (1) presence/absence of attack transient, (2) rise time, (3) duration, (4) number of harmonics, (5) upper limit of harmonicity (6) spectral envelope shape, and (7) frequency.
