The Effect of Human Alpha Interferon on Rat Kidney Cell Infected with Temperature-Sensitive Mutant of Rous Sarcoma Virus

Description: LA31-NRK and B77-NRK are established cell lines that were normal rat kidney cells transformed with temperature-sensitive mutant (LA31) and wild-type Bratislava 77 (B77) of Rous sarcoma virus. It is recognized that many transformation-induced changes differentiate between normal and transformed cells. Morphology and four parameters of transformed cells such as saturation density, anchorage independence, plasminogen activator, and colony stimulating factor were used as indicators to observe the e… more

Effects of Ribavirin on Normal Rat Kidney Cells and Chicken Embryo Fibroblasts Infected with Rous Sarcoma Virus

Description: Ribavirin, a synthetic nucleoside, was found to inhibit the replication of Rous sarcoma viruses (RSV) and subsequent cell transformation in chick embryo fibroblasts (CEF). It also blocked the transformation of normal rat kidney (NRK) cells infected with temperature-sensitive mutants of RSV. The action of Ribavirin was found to be reversible as removal of the drug from the NRK cells reversed the effects on cell transformation. Ribavirin appears to have a static effect on cell growth of both NRK … more

Enhancement by Human Chorionic Gonadotropin of Transformation of Chick Embryo Fibroblasts and Rat Kidney Cells Infected with Temperature-Sensitive and Wild Type Rous Sarcoma Viruses

Description: Human chorionic gonodotropin (HCG) affected in various ways cell cultures infected with strains of Rous sarcoma virus (RSV). The cell cultures studied were chick embryo fibroblasts (CEF), normal rat kidney cells infected with temperature-sensitive mutant (LA31-NRK) and a wild type RSV (B77-NRK). HCG increased the rate of transformation and viral titer of CEF cells infected with RSV, but not B77-NRK. HCG increased significantly transformation rates of LA31-NRK, only if the temperature sensitive … more

The PROSAIC Laplace and Fourier Transform

Description: Integral Transform methods play an extremely important role in many branches of science and engineering. The ease with which many problems may be solved using these techniques is well known. In Electrical Engineering especially, Laplace and Fourier Transforms have been used for a long time as a way to change the solution of differential equations into trivial algebraic manipulations or to provide alternate representations of signals and data. These techniques, while seemingly overshadowed by to… more

The Effects of 3-Deazaguanine on Chick Embryo Fibroblasts and Rat Kidney Cells Infected with Temperature-Sensitive Mutant and Wild-Type Rous Sarcoma Viruses

Description: Chick embryo fibroblasts and rat kidney cells infected in vitro with Rous Sarcoma viruses were treated with 3-deazaguanine (3-DG). The findings revealed that 3-DG inhibited virus-induced cellular transformation. Degree of inhibition is dependent on concentration and frequency of media change. 3-DG at the concentrations tested will not reverse transformed cells to the untransformed state and does not have marked effect on replication of viruses. Upon removal of 3-DG, its effect was shown to be r… more

Similar Solutions for the Compressible Laminar Boundary Layer with Heat Transfer and Pressure Gradient

Description: Note applying Stewartson's transformation to the laminar compressible boundary-layer equations and the requirement of similarity, resulting in a set of ordinary nonlinear differential equations previously quoted by Stewartson, but unsolved. The requirements of the system are specified. It is then transformed to an integral system with the velocity ratio as the independent variable.

Noninvariance of Space and Time Scale Ranges under a Lorentz Transformation and the Implications for the Numerical Study of Relativistic Systems

Description: We present an analysis which shows that the ranges of space and time scales spanned by a system are not invariant under the Lorentz transformation. This implies the existence of a frame of reference which minimizes an aggregate measure of the range of space and time scales. Such a frame is derived for example cases: free electron laser, laser-plasma accelerator, and particle beam interacting with electron clouds. Implications for experimental, theoretical and numerical studies are discussed. Th… more

Two-stage sintering inhibits abnormal grain growth during beta to alpha transformation in SiC

Description: Free sintering of SiC with Al, B, and C additions in two successive stages, first under nitrogen and then under argon, produced a near full-density ceramic with equiaxed grain structure. The beta to alpha transformation proceeded to completion; however, the grain shape remained equiaxed due to the action of nitrogen present during the first stage of sintering. It is found that the beta to alpha transformation is necessary but not sufficient for producing the microstructure of interlocking plate… more

A Study of Mechanisms to Engineer Fine Scale Alpha Phase Precipitation in Beta Titanium Alloy, Beta 21S

Description: Metastable b-Ti alloys are titanium alloys with sufficient b stabilizer alloying additions such that it's possible to retain single b phase at room temperature. These alloys are of great advantage compared to a/b alloys since they are easily cold rolled, strip produced and can attain excellent mechanical properties upon age hardening. Beta 21S, a relatively new b titanium alloy in addition to these general advantages is known to possess excellent oxidation and corrosion resistance at elevated t… more

An Iterative Transformation Procedure for Numerical Solution of Flutter and Similar Characteristics-Value Problems

Description: "An iterative transformation procedure suggested by H. Wielandt for numerical solution of flutter and similar characteristic-value problems is presented. Application of this procedure to ordinary natural-vibration problems and to flutter problems is shown by numerical examples. Comparisons of computed results with experimental values and with results obtained by other methods of analysis are made" (p. 1).

Residential market transformation: National and regional indicators

Description: A variety of programs are underway to address market barriers to the adoption of energy-efficient residential technologies and practices. Most are administered by utilities, states, or regions that rely on the Energy Star as a consistent platform for program marketing and messaging. This paper reviews regional and national market transformation activities for three key residential end-uses -- air conditioning, clothes washing, and lighting -- characterizing current and ongoing programs; reporti… more

Application of the Laplace Transformation to the Solution of the Lateral and Longitudinal Stability Equations

Description: Note presenting the application of the Laplace transformation to the solution of the lateral and longitudinal stability equations. The expressions for the time history of the motion in response to a sinusoidal control motion are derived for the general case in which all initial measurements are assumed different from zero.

Phase Separation and Second Phase Precipitation in Beta Titanium Alloys

Description: The current understanding of the atomic scale phenomenon associated with the influence of beta phase instabilities on the evolution of microstructure in titanium alloys is limited due to their complex nature. Such beta phase instabilities include phase separation and precipitation of nano-scale omega and alpha phases in the beta matrix. The initial part of the present study focuses on omega precipitation within the beta matrix of model binary titanium molybdenum (Ti-Mo) alloys. Direct atomic sc… more

The Transformation of Materials and Representation of the Idea of the Baby Doll

Description: I want to find a balance within the juxtaposition of representational imagery, patterned fabric, stain and found objects, which effectively communicates the ideas of my work, yet still provides a visually interesting object/painting. How do my materials relate to the content and/or meaning of the work? How will focusing on a single subject affect the development and visual content of my painting? How will I choose representational images to use in relation to the aims of my subject? I was struc… more
