Report on behavior of aeroplanes in gusts

Description: Part 1 presents the results of a wind tunnel test of a biplane model with an 18 inch span. The lift, drift, and pitching moment were measured for a series of angles of incidence corresponding to the maximum possible changes of flight attitude. Only the discussion of symmetrical or longitudinal changes is given. From the observed rate of variation of the forces and pitching moment, it was possible to calculate the derivatives needed in the complete theory of longitudinal stability in still air. The damping of the pitching oscillation was also determined experimentally. Part 2 presents a theoretical method for determining the effects of gusts on aeroplanes in the following cases: (1) head-on gusts rising from 0 to j feet per second with various degrees of sharpness, (2) up gusts of the same type, (3) rotary gusts of the same type, (4) rear gusts and down gusts are included by merely changing the sign of j.

Design and Parameterization of a Coral Reef Ecosystem Model for Guam

Description: Report that gathers and analyzes environmental, habitat, biological, and fishery data from diverse sources. These data help identify information gaps, such as, near-shore habitat data, biomass and abundance data of invertebrate species, chlorophyll-a data at different depths and certain life history parameters for invertebrates and fish.

Cyclotron Component Design Technical Reports

Description: From introduction: The study of cyclotron-magnet design presented here is directed toward attaining a large ratio of energy in the ion beam with respect to cost. Alternatively, the goal may be regarded as a smaller, more convenient apparatus. These two objectives are not completely incompatible; a design that is more economical than the usual is also smaller. The best design of a cyclotron can be obtained only by considering the problem as a whole. The conditions necessary to maintain an ion beam, the conditions required for the operation of the oscillator, and a host of other problems influence the design of the magnet. It is assumed in this paper that the "other problems" can be satisfactorily solved, if the gap has a suitable geometry and the field a suitable space dependence.

Depth Derivation Using Multispectral WorldView-2 Satellite Imagery

Description: Report discussing high-resolution multibeam bathymetry data. Results show that in the absence of shallow (0-20 m) high-resolution bathymetric data, satellite-derived depths are an important resource for assessing, monitoring, and managing shallow coral reef ecosystems. (pg. iii)

Censuses and Interatoll Movements of the Hawaiian Monk Seal on Laysan Island, 1985

Description: Abstract: Research on the Laysan Island population of the endangered Hawaiian monk seal, Monachus schauinslandi, was conducted from 2 march to 30 November 1985. census totals excluding pups ranged from 76 to 147, an average increase of nearly 20 animals from the 1984 census results. Overall monthly haul-out distribution for all seals showed highest use in the north ecological unit followed by the west unit. Relatively few animals hauled out in the eastern and southern portions of the island. Interatoll movement of nine seals was documented, resulting in a net increase of three animals to the Laysan Island population.

Fishery Interaction Between the Tuna Lonline and Other Pelagic Fisheries in Hawaii

Description: Abstract: The Hawaii pelagic surface fisheries and more recently the longline fisheries have grown dramatically. As a result, competition between fisheries on the fishing grounds and in the marketplace has also increased. Physical conflicts between vessels and claims of decreased fishing success by surface (troll and handline) fishermen led to the enactment of Federal regulations limiting the number of domestic longline vessels and the areas in which they can operate. The scientific evidence of biological or economic fishery interaction between longline and small-vessel fishermen is limited but suggests that intense longline fishing near the Hawaiian Islands has the potential to affect catch rates in other Hawaii fisheries. Better data collection and more research are needed to document fishery interaction and to improve fishery management.
