The problem in this study is to determine the effectiveness of classroom guidance upon the personal and social adjustment of a group of third-grade children. It is the purpose of this study to compare the effects of a planned program of activities upon the personal adjustment of a third-grade group with a similar group who did not participate in such a program of activities.

An Investigation to Determine Improvement in the Social Status of Children Through Concetrated Effort

Description: The problem of this study is an investigation of the development of social adjustment in thirty-three first-grade pupils in Gainesville, Texas, during 1949-1950. The purpose of the study is to determine each child's total readiness status at the beginning of the investigation, surround each with socializing experiences appropriate to his need, and then determine whether measurable benefits appear to result from his participation in the specific activities designed for social development.

Group Social Skills Training of Adolescents with School Adjustment Problems

Description: The purpose of the present study was to compare a traditional therapeutic technique (client-centered) to a structured social skills training package in the group treatment of adolescents with school and social adjustment problems, An additional consideration was made of the efficacy of the specific training program used as applied to this population. Seven indices of change (four of which are behavioral and three self-report) were included in the study as dependent variables. Subjects were students attending an "alternative" high school whose population consisted primarily of pre-adjudicated juvenile delinquents, status offenders, and other students experiencing various social adjustment difficulties in more traditional high school environments.

Factors Relating to Personal-Social Adjustments of First- and Second-Grade Children in Self-Contained and Team-Teaching Classrooms

Description: This study was undertaken in order to compare the self-contained classroom with team-teaching organizations according to pupil behavior and personal-social adjustment in children of first- and second-grade level. A comparison was made of pupil behavior and personal-social adjustments between (1) children in the first grade after one year in the self-contained classroom and children in the first grade after one year in a team-teaching organization and (2) children in the second grade after two years in the self-contained classrooms and children in the second grade after two years in team-teaching organizations.

In Loco Parentis: How Social Connections Beyond Families Affect Children's Social Adjustment

Description: This study explored the relationship between characteristics of children's families and their social adjustment and how extra-familial connections affect this relationship. According to human ecological theory, children who are in jeopardy through higher-risk family systems and other social forces were expected to be protected from sociocultural risks by social connections in such settings as school, church, kin groups, and neighborhood.
