The Relationship between Some Aspects of Religion and Purpose-in-Life Test Scores

Description: This study was an effort to objectify and test empirically Tillich's theory. Its purpose was to investigate certain traditional aspects of religion to see whether their presence was associated with purposefulness in life. The variables used in this study were measures of participation in a faith, belief in an afterlife, belief in God, past and current doubts, religious experiences, commitment implied in the consideration of a church related vocation, and of purpose in life. Tillich would say th… more

GPP user`s guide - a general-purpose postprocessor for wind turbine data analysis

Description: GPP (pronounced {open_quotes}jeep{close_quotes}) is a General-Purpose Postprocessor for wind turbine data analysis. The author, a member of the Wind Technology Division (WTD) of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), developed GPP to postprocess test data and simulation predictions. GPP reads data into large arrays and allows the user to run many types of analyses on the data stored in memory. It runs on inexpensive computers common in the wind industry. One can even use it on a lapto… more

Monitoring and Commissioning Verification Algorithms for CHP Systems

Description: This document provides the algorithms for CHP system performance monitoring and commissioning verification (CxV). It starts by presenting system-level and component-level performance metrics, followed by descriptions of algorithms for performance monitoring and commissioning verification, using the metric presented earlier. Verification of commissioning is accomplished essentially by comparing actual measured performance to benchmarks for performance provided by the system integrator and/or com… more

District cooling and heating development in Stamford, CT. Final report

Description: This report summarizes the development options for introducing district cooling and heating in downtown Stamford, Connecticut. A district energy system as defined for the Stamford project is the production of chilled and hot water at a central energy plant, and its distribution underground to participating building in the vicinity. The objective of the study was to investigate implementation of a district energy system in conjunction with cogeneration as a means to encourage energy conservation… more

Heat loss from an open cavity

Description: Cavity type receivers are used extensively in concentrating solar thermal energy collecting systems. The Solar Total Energy Project (STEP) in Shenandoah, Georgia is a large scale field test for the collection of solar thermal energy. The STEP experiment consists of a large field array of solar collectors used to supplement the process steam, cooling and other electrical power requirements of an adjacent knitwear manufacturing facility. The purpose of the tests, conducted for this study, was to … more

Chp Regional Application Centers: A Preliminary Inventory of Activities and Selected Results

Description: Eight Regional CHP Application Centers (RACs) are funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to facilitate the development and deployment of Combined Heat and Power (CHP) technologies in all 50 states. The RACs build end-user awareness by providing CHP-related information to targeted markets through education and outreach; they work with the states and regulators to encourage the creation and adoption of favorable public policies; and they provide CHP users and prospective users with technic… more

Coal Air Turbine ``CAT`` program invention 604. Eighth quarter project report and final for the project, August--September 1996

Description: The primary objective of this ``CAT`` project is to complete a conceptual design of this unique new combination of existing technology with cost estimates to show that the ``CAT`` system offers the economic incentive with low technical risk for a plant to be built which will demonstrate its viability. The technologies involved in the components of a ``CAT`` plant are proven, and the integration of the components into a complete plant is the only new developmental activity involved. Industry and… more

THERMODYNAMICS OF PARTIALLY FROZEN COOLING LAKES

Description: The Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) collected visible, SWIR, MWIR and LWIR imagery of the Midland (Michigan) Cogeneration Ventures Plant from aircraft during the winter of 2008-2009. RIT also made ground-based measurements of lake water and ice temperatures, ice thickness and atmospheric variables. The Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) used the data collected by RIT and a 3-D hydrodynamic code to simulate the Midland cooling lake. The hydrodynamic code was able to reproduce the … more

Effects of a shortened depreciation schedule on the investment costs for combined heat and power

Description: We investigate and compare several generic depreciation methods to assess the effectiveness of possible policy measures with respect to the depreciation schedules for investments in combined heat and power plants in the United States. We assess the different depreciation methods for CHP projects of various sizes (ranging from 1 MW to 100 MW). We evaluate the impact of different depreciation schedules on the tax shield, and the resulting tax savings to potential investors. We show that a shorter… more
