Special Developments Project: Progress Report To February 1, 1954

Description: Abstract: Progress in developing a high-output pulsed proton source is reported. The Ti ion source has been examined to determine the factors influencing its operation. The manner of pulsing this source and measuring the beam current is described. Disadvantages of the Ti source are discussed together with the characteristics of improved versions developed during the period covered by this report. Representative output data are presented and the future experimental program is outlined.

An Analysis of Ways of Reporting Child Progress to Parents

Description: This thesis deals specifically with one phase of our educational program. It is an analysis of newer ways of reporting child progress to parents. In this study of reporting child progress to parents the problem in concern is how near our newer ways of reporting approach the present trends in education which are influenced by our modern philosophical and psychological concepts.

High-Performance Batteries for Stationary Energy Storage and Electric-Vehicle Propulsion, Progress Report: October 1978-March 1979

Description: This report covers the research, development, and management activities of the programs at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) and at subcontractors' laboratories on high-temperature batteries during the period October 1978 - March 1979. These batteries are being developed for electric-vehicle propulsion and for stationary energy--storage applications. The present cells, which operate at 400-500 C, are of a vertically oriented, prismatic design with one or more inner positive electrodes of FeS or… more

Special Developments Project Progress Report 2: February 1, 1954 to November 1, 1954

Description: Abstract: Further work has been done towards developing a high-output hydrogen ion source using the principle of the Ti ion source, the release of ions from hydrogenated titanium. It is concluded that previous efforts had resulted in the production of large quantities of low-energy ions but had failed in the attempt to accelerate a significant fraction of these. A new approach is undertaken that involves an entirely different geometry. Successfully accelerated and focused beams are obtained. Pe… more

Preparation of Ductile Zirconium: Progress Report for September 1949

Description: Abstract: A report was submitted describing the apparatus which is proposed for further dissociation experiments and approval for necessary construction was requested. While awaiting approval, detailed designs were completed and some experimental work necessary for this design was carried out. The casting equipment was modified in accordance with experimental work for casting of zirconium. The apparatus was tested and it was found possible to form and withdraw and ingot of zirconium.

Preparation of Ductile Zirconium: Progress Report for January 1950

Description: Abstract: A new feeder chute on the continuous casting apparatus, and the use of outgassed zirconium chips resulted in a stable arc and quiet pool. Ingots up to 9 1/2 inches in length were made, and some correlation between tension on the ingot and the "necking" effect was determined. Conversions of zirconium iodide to zirconium in the arc dissociation apparatus ran from 41 to 48.2 percent with a maximum of 474 grams of metal produced in 4 hours.

Preparation of Ductile Zirconium: Progress Report for February 1950

Description: Abstract: A tungsten tipped electrode has been used in the continuous casting arc furnace for a 25 minute period during which a 12 inch length of ingot was made. Thermocouple junctions within the mold wall have been improved to give mold zone temperature. A total of 10 iodide dissociation runs have been conducted using feed rates of .62-22.7 lbs ZrI₄ per hour with attendant conversion efficiencies of 97.7-16.4% and zirconium yields of 255-41.2 grams per hour. A curve expressing these data for a… more
