Lift and drag data for 30 pusher-propeller shaft housings on an NACA 65,3-018 airfoil section

Description: Report presenting tests in the two-dimensional low-turbulence pressure tunnel to study the interference effects of various pusher-propeller shaft-housing combinations on a low-drag airfoil. Thirty different combinations were tested, variations being made in shaft size, shape, angle, and fillet.

An Investigation of a Lifting 10-Percent-Thick Symmetrical Double-Wedge Airfoil at Mach Number Up to 1

Description: Note presenting pressure measurements on the surface of a two-dimensional symmetrical double-wedge airfoil obtained from tests in the Langley 4- by 19-inch semiopen tunnel at lifting conditions and Mach numbers up to 1. The purpose of the investigation was to obtain normal-force, pressure-drag, and pitching-moment data and to compare them with available experimental and theoretical results.

Measurement of Static Pressure on Aircraft

Description: Note presenting existing data on the errors involved in the measurement of static pressure by means of static-pressure tubes and fuselage vents. The errors associated with the various design features of static-pressure tubes are discussed for the condition of zero angle of attack and for the case where the tube is inclined to the flow.

Comparative Tests of Pitot-Static Tubes

Description: "Comparative tests were made on seven conventional Pitot-static tubes to determine their static, dynamic, and resultant errors. The effect of varying the dynamic opening, static opening, wall thickness, and inner-tube diameter was investigated. Pressure-distribution measurements showing stem and tip effects were also made. A tentative design for a standard Pitot-static tube for use in measuring air velocity is submitted" (p. 1).

Tabulated Pressure Data for a Series of Controls on a 40 Degree Sweptback Wing at Mach Numbers of 1.61 and 2.01

Description: "An investigation has been made at Mach numbers of 1.61 and 2.01 and Reynolds numbers of 1.7 x l0(exp 6) and 3.6 x l0(exp 6) to determine the pressure distributions over a swept wing with a series of 14 control configurations. The wing had 40 deg of sweep of the quarter-chord line, an aspect ratio of 3.1, and a taper ratio of 0.4. Measurements were made at angles of attack from 0 deg to +/- 15 deg for control deflections from -60 deg to 60 deg. This report contains tabulated pressure data for t… more

Influence of the Orifice on Measured Pressures

Description: "The influence of different orifices on the result of measuring the same pressure distributions is the subject of this note. A circular cylinder is exposed to an air stream perpendicular to its axis and its pressure distribution is repeatedly determined. The pressures measured on the downstream half of the cylinder do not change for the orifice sizes used in the tests" (p. 1).

A flight investigation of fuselage static-pressure-vent airspeed installations

Description: Report presenting an investigation to determine the departure of the static pressure measured at fuselage static-pressure vents from the static pressure of the ambient air. Several locations for fuselage static-pressure vents on an XB-24F and a Lockheed 12A airplane.

The Processes in Spring-Loaded Injection Valves of Solid Injection Oil Engines

Description: "On the premise of a rectangular velocity wave arriving at the valve, the equation of motion of a spring-loaded valve stem is developed and analyzed. It is found that the stem oscillates, the oscillation frequency being consistently above the natural frequency of the nozzle stem alone, and whose amplitudes would increase in the absence of damping. The results are evaluated and verified on an example" (p. 1).

The Calculation of Pressure on Slender Airplanes in Subsonic and Supersonic Flow

Description: "Under the assumption that a wing, body, or wing-body combination is slender or flying at near sonic velocity, expressions are given which permit the calculation of pressure in the immediate vicinity of the configuration. The disturbance field, in both subsonic and supersonic flight, is shown to consist of two-dimensional disturbance fields extending laterally and a longitudinal field that depends on the streamwise growth of cross-sectional area. A discussion is also given of couplings, between… more
