Evolutionary Genetics of Certain Mice of the Peromyscus boylii Species Group

Description: The genetic structure of 49 natural populations of four species (P. attwateri, P. boylii, P. pectoralis, and P. polius) of the Peromyscus boylii species group was analyzed through application of chromosomal and electrophoretic techniques. Chromosomal variation within and among populations of the boylii species group was analyzed from 178 specimens. Electrophoretic techniques were utilized for the demonstration of variation in enzymes and other proteins encoded by structural loci and applied to … more

Avian populations at the ALE reservation

Description: Studies were conducted on species composition, population densities, and standing crop biomass of small songbirds in mixed palouse-shrubsteppe habitats of the Arid Lands Ecology (ALE) reservation. Results of field studies conducted during late 1972 and 1973 are presented, as well as results of 1972 IBP population studies. An appendix is included to show territory mappings from which plot-based population density estimates were derived. (HLW)

Radiological evaluations for advanced waste management studies

Description: The overall risk evaluation for various radioactive waste management concepts includes calculation of radiation doses to individuals and local populations. Radiation doses are the most appropriate measure of the consequences of unforeseen releases of radioactive materials to the environment and dose criteria are available by which the severity may be judged. A comprehensive dose computational model, developed and used for other Atomic Energy Commission studies, has been adopted to improve its f… more

Argonne Radiological Impact Program (ARIP). Part I. Carcinogenic hazard from low-level, low-rate radiation

Description: The entire Argonne Radiological Impact Program is briefly outlined, and part of the program dealing with radiation hazards from nuclear power plants is discussed in detail. Various models and predictions of carcinogenic hazard are examined and compared with actual experience in U. S. and foreign populations. All of the models predict a significant increment in malignant mortality with increasing background. Observation of the actual populations at risk shows not only no increment, but an actual… more

Fallout Strontium-90 and Cesium-137 in Northern Alaskan Ecosystems During 1959--1970

Description: Thesis. Cycling routes, rates of transport, and resultant concentrations of the fallout radionuclides /sup 90/Sr and /sup 137/Cs in northern Alaskan ecosystems were defined during the period 1959 to 1970. Radiochemical analysis of extensive samples of biota and whole-body counting of / sup 137/Cs in Eskimo and Indian ethnic groups were related to ecological principles, especially the concept of trophic niche, which elucidated the observed patterns of radionuclide concentrations. Experiments inv… more

EXREM III computer code for estimating external radiation doses to populations from environmental releases

Description: EXREM III is a computer code to estimate the dose equivalent rate and the total dose equivalent from beta, positron, electron, and gamma radintion resulting from submersion in contaminated water, submersion in contaminated air, and exposure to a contaminated surface. There can be more than one environmental release, and exposure can begin at any time after the first release. EXREM III considers contributions from environmental releases and from nuclide decay chains. For a particular problem the… more

Environmental safety evaluations for nuclear installations

Description: Environmental safety has been an important consideration in the siting, design, and operation of nuclear installations. As a result there have been very few cases in which the releases of radioactive materials from these installations have posed a dosimetrically significant environmental risk, and almost all of these have been connected with accidents or other unintentional situations. In no situation do the intentional releases from nuclear installations appear to have posed significant enviro… more

Plutonium and environmental metals in man. Interlaboratory meeting, May 9, 1973

Description: From plutonium and environmental metals in man conference; Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA (9 May 1973). The various aspects of handling human autopsy tissues and methods used for the determination of Pu in tissues are discussed. Types of cases are classified as: the general population, with no known exposure to actinide elements; former AEC personnel which had an exposure potential; and Transuranium Registry cases representing known exposures to Pu and other actinides. It is pointed out that 5 mi… more

Environmental radiation dose criteria and assessment: pathway modeling and surveillance

Description: From nuclear science symposium; San Francisco, California, USA (14 Nov 1973). The controversy in recent years over the extent of the risk to the public from environmental radioactivity attributable to nuclear facilities (in particular nuclear power plants and fuel reprocessing facilities) has resulted in a lowering of previously acceptable environmental radiation levels. The proposal by the AEC to limit effluents from light-water-cooled nuclear reactors so that the exposure of any individual in… more

Transportation noise: impacts and analysis techniques

Description: Computerized models that can be used by transportation engineers, planners, and environmentalists to assess the impacts of transportation noise problems generated by highway and airport facilities are presented. Thc characteristics of transportation noise are discussed in terms of generation, effects and impacts, measurement, and control. The economic, physiological, psychological, and societal effects of urban noise are described in detail. (MCW)
