Stability of Rectangular Plates With Longitudinal or Transverse Stiffeners Under Uniform Compression

Description: In the present paper, the complete buckling conditions of stiffened plates are being developed for uniform compression. We shall treat plates with one or two longitudinal or transverse stiffeners at any point, discuss the buckling conditions, and evaluate them for different cases.

A General Small-Deflection Theory for Flat Sandwich Plates

Description: Note presenting a small-deflection theory developed for the elastic behavior of orthotropic flat plates in which deflections due to shear are taken into account. The theory covers all types of flat sandwich construction and includes seven physical constants for each plate, of which six are independent.

The Buckling of a Uniformly Compressed Plate with Intermediate Supports

Description: This problem has been selected from the mathematical theory of elasticity. We consider a rectangular plate of thickness h, length a, and width b. The plate is subjected to compressive forces. These forces act in the neutral plane and give the plate a tendency to buckle. However, this problem differs from other plate problems in that it is assumed that there are two intermediate supports located on the edges of the plate parallel to the compressive forces.

Sampling Plan for Assaying Plates Containing Depleted or Normal Uranium

Description: This paper describes the rationale behind the proposed method for selecting a 'representative' sample of uranium metal plates, portions of which will be destructively assayed at the Y-12 Security Complex. The total inventory of plates is segregated into two populations, one for Material Type 10 (depleted uranium (DU)) and one for Material Type 81 (normal [or natural] uranium (NU)). The plates within each population are further stratified by common dimensions. A spreadsheet gives the collective … more

FINITE ELEMENT SIMULATION FOR STRUCTURAL RESPONSE OF U7MO DISPERSION FUEL PLATES VIA FLUID-THERMAL-STRUCTURAL INTERACTION

Description: This article presents numerical simulation of dispersion fuel mini plates via fluid–thermal–structural interaction performed by commercial finite element solver COMSOL Multiphysics to identify initial mechanical response under actual operating conditions. Since fuel particles are dispersed in Aluminum matrix, and temperatures during the fabrication process reach to the melting temperature of the Aluminum matrix, stress/strain characteristics of the domain cannot be reproduced by using simplifie… more

FY04 Inspection Results for Wet Uruguay Fuel in L-Basin

Description: The 2004 visual inspection of four Uruguay nuclear fuel assemblies stored in L-Basin was completed. This was the third inspection of this wet stored fuel since its arrival in the summer of 1998. Visual inspection photographs of the fuel from the previous and the recent inspections were compared and no evidence of significant corrosion was found on the individual fuel plate photographs. Fuel plates that showed areas of pitting in the cladding during the original receipt inspection were also iden… more

["The Expedition of Humphry Clinker"; "Burdock refiting the surgeon's attempt to trepan him."]

Description: Etching and engraving print from page 216 of Charles Grignion I's "The Expedition of Humphry Clinker"; "Burdock refiting the surgeon's attempt to trepan him.". The print includes an oval framing the scene with characteristic flourishes of ivy vines surrounding a plaque with the title information. The main figure in the image appears standing on his bed angrily confronting a flustered doctor to a room of terrified onlookers. The print was part of a copy of the picaresque novel "The Expedition of… more

Advanced Test Reactor In-Canal Ultrasonic Scanner: Experiment Design and Initial Results on Irradiated Plates

Description: An irradiation test device has been developed to support testing of prototypic scale plate type fuels in the Advanced Test Reactor. The experiment hardware and operating conditions were optimized to provide the irradiation conditions necessary to conduct performance and qualification tests on research reactor type fuels for the RERTR program. The device was designed to allow disassembly and reassembly in the ATR spent fuel canal so that interim inspections could be performed on the fuel plates.… more

Bending With Large Deflection of a Clamped Rectangular Plate With Length-Width Ratio of 1.5 Under Normal Pressure

Description: "The Von Karman equations for a thin flat plate with large deflections are solved for the special case of a plate with clamped edges having a ratio of length to width of 1.5 and loaded by uniform normal pressure. Center deflections, membrane stresses, and extreme-fiber bending stresses are given as a function of pressure for center deflections up to twice the thickness of the plate. For small deflections the results coincide with those obtained by Hencky from the linear theory" (p. 1).

The hydrodynamic characteristics of modified rectangular flat plates having aspect ratios of 1.00 and 0.25 and operating near a free water surface

Description: Report presenting an investigation to determine the hydrodynamic forces and moments acting on modified rectangular flat plates with aspect ratios of 1.00 and 0.25 mounted on a single strut and operating at several depths of submersion. The experimental investigation indicated that decreasing the aspect ratio or depth of submersion caused a decrease in the lift coefficient, drag coefficient, and lift-drag ratio.

Hydrodynamic characteristics over a range of speeds up to 80 feet per second of a rectangular modified flat plate having an aspect ratio of 0.25 and operating at several depths of submersion

Description: Results of an investigation of the hydrodynamic characteristics over an extended speed range of a rectangular modified flat plate having an aspect ratio of 0.25 and operating at several depths of submersion are presented. Comparisons between these data and data over a lower speed range on a similar aspect-ratio-0.25 flat plate but having one-half the thickness are presented. These comparisons show no significant differences at the low speeds. At high speeds and high angles of attack, where exte… more

New Frictional Resistance Law for Smooth Plates

Description: From measurements in the free boundary layer of a plate the laws governing the velocity distribution and a new resistance law are derived which, by increasing Reynolds number Re(sub x) afford lower resistance values than the logarithmic law. The transverse velocities, the shearing stress, and the mixing path profiles were also defined.

Resistance of Plates and Pipes at High Reynolds Numbers

Description: It was learned that the law of resistance for high R values does not follow the simple powers, and that the powers, which can be obtained approximately for the velocity distribution, gradually change. Since, moreover, very important investigations have recently been made on the resistance of plates at very high R values, it seemed of interest to apply the above line of reasoning to the new general law of resistance. For this purpose, the resistance and velocity distribution along the plate must… more
