A Normative Study of the Physical Fitness of Fourteen-, Fifteen-, and Sixteen-Year-Old Navajo Girls Using the AAHPER Youth Fitness Test

Description: The purpose of this study is to measure the physical fitness levels of Navajo girls fourteen to sixteen years of age using the AAHPER Youth Fitness Test and to establish norms based upon scores determined from test results from seven schools. These norms are also compared to national norms found in the manual accompanying the AAHPER Youth Fitness Test. The results of this study give an indication of the overall fitness level of fourteen-, fifteen-, and sixteenyear-old Navajo girls. Of the seven test items, the Navajo norms were below the national norm on five items and above on the softball throw and 600 yard run-walk

A study of muscular development and muscular strength in the highly trained female bodybuilder and the non-strength trained female

Description: The extent of muscular strength and muscular size in 20 female bodybuilders and 20 non-strength trained females was studied. Body composition and segment volumes and related anthropometric measurements data were obtained along with chest press and knee extension One Repetition Maximum (IRM) and 25 Repitition Maximum (25RM) values. No group differences were present in age, height, weight and segment volumes. The bodybuilders had a lower percent body fat, greater lean body weight (LBW) and larger muscles compared to the non-strength trained females.

The Relationship Between Pace Characteristics of Distance Runs and Criterion Measures of Endurance

Description: The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between treadmill time, maximal oxygen consumption and pace characteristics of the 1.5 and 3 mile runs and to compare the distances and pace characteristics as predictors of aerobic capacity. Subjects were 70 college aged males, ages 18 to 25, enrolled in jogging and conditioning classes at North Texas State University. Three tests were administered: the 1.5 mile run, the 3 mile run and the Bruce treadmill test. The data were analyzed using correlations and factor analysis. Conclusions of the investigation were (1) the 1.5 and 3 mile runs are valid measures of aerobic capacity, (2) the 3 mile run does not significantly increase the correlation between VO2max and endurance runs and (3) pacing characteristics are evident in the 1.5 and 3 mile runs.

Relationship Between Mood State and Cognitive Strategies on Endurance Performance

Description: The present investigation examined the relationship between elated and depressed moods and dissociation, association, and positive self-talk strategies on endurance performance. Results showed a significant mood main effect with elated subjects performing longer than depressed subjects. Results also revealed a significant cognitive strategy main effect with positive self-talk and dissociation groups producing longer endurance times than association and control groups. A significant interaction between mood and cognitive strategy found that subjects in the positive self-talk and dissociation groups increased their performance time to a greater extent from the depressed to the elated condition than did subjects in the association and control groups. Results are discussed in terms of previous investigations of mood and cognitive strategies on physical performance.

Survey of Physical Education in Texas High Schools

Description: The first purpose of this study was to determine whether the physical education programs of Texas high schools met the recommended minimum requirements of the Texas Education Agency in the following areas: 1. Appraisal of fitness 2. Body mechanics 3. Conditioning exercises 4. Gymnastics 5. Weight training (modified for girls) 6. Rhythms 7. Minimum of two team sports 8. Minimum of two individual-dual activities 9. Track and field. The second purpose of this study was to determine whether the small high schools in Texas were meeting the recommended minimum requirements of the Texas Education Agency to the same degree as large Texas schools. The third purpose of this study was to determine whether the boys' physical education program in Texas high schools were meeting the recommended minimum requirements of the Texas Education Agency to the same degree as girls' programs.

Relation of Pre- and Post-Puberty Anthropometric Measurements and Performance of American Negro and Caucasian Females on the AAHPER Physical Fitness Battery

Description: The problem of this study is to determine the relationship that may exist among the variables of racial status, puberty status, anthropometric measurements, and physical fitness. Particularly of interest are the anthropometric differences that may exist among Negroes and Caucasians and the effect that these differences may have upon physical fitness as measured by the AAHPER Physical Fitness Battery. Differences among racial groups and puberty groups will be determined by analysis of variance technique and relations among anthropometric measures and physical fitness components will be compared and determined by correlational techniques.

Comparative Effects of Two Physical Conditioning Programs and Evaluation of Instruments for Measuring Physical Fitness

Description: The problem of this study was to determine the effects of (1) a conditioning program designed to develop cardiovascular-respiratory efficiency and (2) a conditioning program designed to develop strength and agility on the improvement of parameters of physical fitness as measured "by the AAHPER Youth Fitness Test, basal heart rate, and physical work capacity determined by a progressive work test on the bicycle ergometer.

Critical Power as a Predictor of Performance in a Bicycle Time Trial

Description: Certain measures of aerobic power have been shown to have a high relationship with endurance performance. Critical power (CP) has also been shown to be well correlated to endurance performance, but few studies have evaluated its use in a competitive scenario. In this study, cardiorespiratory-metabolic measures were evaluated in 13 highly trained cyclists to determine their relationship to performance in a 17 km time trial. Critical power, determined from the nonlinear power-time model, was also evaluated to determine its relationship to performance in a 17 km time trial. Results indicate that the traditional indicators of V02max and ventilatory anaerobic threshold were well correlated to TT performance (r=-0.86, r=-0.79, respectively). The principal finding from this study was that performance in a bicycle time trial is related to CP at least as well as to cardiorespirator-ymetabolic measures. In fact, the results fromthis study suggest that the relationship between performance and CP is stronger (r=-0.89). Use of the critical power concept is attractive because testing requires only a cycle ergometer and a stopwatch to estimate a parameter of aerobic fitness.

A factor analysis of twelve selected isotonic muscular endurance exercises on the Universal gym

Description: This study investigated the assessment of muscular endurance using the Universal Gym. Subjects included 19 women and 151 men (18-30 years). Measures of muscular endurance were evaluated at various percentages of 1 RM on twelve exercise stations and it appears that a percentage of 1 RM ranging from .7 for the arms, .5 to .9 for the legs, and ,5 to .8 for the trunk is required to produce fatigue state in the necessary repetition range.

Relation Between the FITNESSGRAM® Ftness Assessment and Self-Reported Physical Activity Questions

Description: The FITNESSGRAM® is regularly used to assess physical fitness (PF) of adolescents. In addition to the PF assessment, the FITNESSGRAM also includes self-report physical activity (PA) items. The purpose of this study was to examine whether the self-report aerobic, muscular strengthening, and flexibility PA behavior items indicated adolescents’ cardiorespiratory, muscular strength, and flexibility fitness and their body composition. Logistic regression analysis was used to examine the relation between the amount of PA and PF status. Adolescents not meeting the recommended PA amount had significantly higher odds of not achieving a healthy fitness status. Meeting the recommended PA amount was associated with achieving healthy PF status. Thus, adolescents’ amounts of aerobic, muscular strengthening, and flexibility PA were an indication of their corresponding health-related PF standard.

A Comparison of Physical Fitness and Anthropometric Measures of Pre-Adolescent Mexican-American and Anglo-American Males

Description: The problem of this study is that of comparing certain physical fitness and anthropometric measures for early adolescent Mexican-American and Anglo-American males. The purposes of the study are to determine if Mexican-American and Anglo-American males differ in physical fitness or anthropometric measures; to determine if the relationships between age and physical fitness, age and arthropometric measures, and anthropometric measures and physical fitness items are significantly different for Mexican-American and Anglo-American males; to compare the rate of maturation for pre-adolescent Mexican-American and Anglo-American males in physical fitness items and anthropometric measures.

Associations Between Physical Fitness and Academic Achievement: A Meditational Analysis

Description: Research has illustrated the interrelatedness of childhood physical fitness and psychological wellbeing, psychological wellbeing and academic achievement, as well as physical fitness and academic achievement. In this study, we proposed that psychological wellbeing (self-esteem and depression) serves as a mediator between physical fitness and academic achievement during adolescence. In a sample of middle school children (N = 1,530), significant correlations were found between all three variables (p.0001). A hierarchical regression analysis was performed to assess the associations between physical fitness, psychological wellbeing, and academic achievement. The regression analysis reported a significant partial mediation effect. The results of this study supported the proposed hypotheses, including a mechanism of psychological wellbeing partially mediating the relationship between physical fitness and academic achievement. The findings of this study support the importance of encouraging activities to promote both physical fitness and psychological wellbeing in schools.
