LIMB Demonstration Project Extension

Description: The basic goal of the Limestone Injection Multistage Burner (LIMB) demonstration is to extend LIMB technology development to a full- scale application on a representative wall-fired utility boiler. The successful retrofit of LIMB to an existing boiler is expected to demonstrate that (a) reductions of 50 percent or greater in SO{sub x} and NO{sub x} emissions can be achieved at a fraction of the cost of add-on FGD systems, (b) boiler reliability, operability, and steam production can be maintain… more

Proof of concept testing of an integrated dry injection system for SO sub x /NO sub x control

Description: The objectives of the subscale test program were designed to provide sorbent and additive selection guidance, and, in so doing, supply answers to the questions posed in the preceding section. The objectives are: Identify the best commercial hydrate sorbent and the best enhanced hydrate sorbent from a list of nine types, based upon S0{sub 2} removal at Ca/S=2. Determine the relative effectiveness of sodium sesquicarbonate versus sodium bicarbonate for S0{sub 2} and NO{sub x} control over the tem… more

The GALLEX Project

Description: The GALLEX collaboration aims at the detection of solar neutrinos in a radiochemical experiment employing 30 tons of Gallium in form of concentrated aqueous Gallium-chloride solution. The detector is primarily sensitive to the otherwise inaccessible pp-neutrinos. Details of the experiment have been repeatedly described before. Here we report the present status of implementation in the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (Italy). So far, 12.2 tons of Gallium are at hand. The present status of de… more

Modeling of Integrated Environmental Control Systems for Coal-Fired Power Plants Quarterly Report: June-September 1989

Description: The general goal of this research project is to enhance, and transfer to DOE, a new computer simulation model for analyzing the performance and cost of environmental control systems for coal-fired power plants. Systems utilizing pre-combustion, combustion, or post-combustion control methods, individually or in combination, may be considered. A unique capability of this model is the probabilistic representation of uncertainty in model input parameters. This stochastic simulation capability allow… more

(Radiopharmacokinetics: Utilization of nuclear medicine)

Description: The work performed in the 1986/1989 period can be characterized as one of testing and documenting that the Radiopharmacokinetic technique is both feasible and applicable to human studies, as well as developing spectroscopic methods for undertaking noninvasive human studies. Main accomplishments include studies which: show that drug targeting can be monitored noninvasively using radiolabeled drugs. The study that documented this finding involved an analysis of the comparative kinetics of biodist… more

A 3-D dynamical/chemical GCM for simulating the anthropogenical effects on ozone

Description: In spite of the significantly increased attention atmospheric ozone has received over the last two decades or so, a fully quantitative understanding of the three-dimensional ozone structure remains unavailable. In the past, one-dimensional (vertical column) models have provided most of the quantitative simulations of atmospheric chemical systems, because these models can treat large ensembles of chemical process economically. More recently, two-dimensional (meridional cross section) models have… more

Study of New Materials for Gun Propellant Formulations

Description: We are searching for new energetic materials to improve gun- propellant formulations. Theoretical calculations indicate that certain types of high nitrogen compounds produce lower average- molecular-weight gases than those with more carbon, and low average-molecular-weight by-products contribute to higher impetus. Therefore, our target compounds were chosen to contain only the elements C, H, N, and O, with a high percentage of nitrogen, be thermally stable and moderately insensitive to impact. … more

Online fiber-optic spectrophotometry

Description: The Savannah River Plant operates two radio-chemical separations areas to recover uranium and plutonium from nuclear reactor fuel and target assemblies. Chemical processes in these areas are controlled based on laboratory analysis of samples extracted from the process. While analytical results from the laboratory are reliable, the process of pulling samples, transporting them to the laboratory, analyzing them, and then reporting results is time consuming and potentially exposes many workers to … more

Cross sections and analyzing powers of sup 15 N(p,n) sup 15 O at 200 MeV and 494 MeV

Description: Differential cross sections and analyzing powers have been measured for the {sup 15}N(p,n){sup 15} O(g.s.) reaction at bombarding energies of 200 MeV and 494 MeV. The 494 MeV data were obtained at the LAMPF Neutron Time-Of-Flight Facility on an 82 m flight path with a resolution of about 2.7 MeV. The 200 MeV data were obtained at IUCF on a 76m flight path with a resolution of about 1.1 MeV. At both energies, the measured analyzing power is small, the magnitude is less than .2 for momentum trans… more

Benzene/nitrous oxide flammability in the precipitate hydrolysis process

Description: The HAN (hydroxylamine nitrate) process for destruction of nitrite in precipitate hydrolysis produces nitrous oxide (N2O) gas as one of the products. N2O can form flammable mixtures with benzene which is also present due to radiolysis and hydrolysis of tetraphenylborate. Extensive flame modeling and explosion testing was undertaken to define the minimum oxidant for combustion of N2O/benzene using both nitrogen and carbon dioxide as diluents. The attached memorandum interprets and documents the … more

Computer simulation of a nitrogen oxides absorption column at the Savannah River Site

Description: A computer model of a nitrogen oxides absorption column has been constructed for the purpose of testing process control strategies in a time- and cost-effective manner. The model consists of a simplified physical and chemical scheme that approximately matches real column behavior. Various feedback, feedforward, and recycle strategies have been tested, and an optimum combination selected. This combination will be tested in the plant in the near future. The overall project goals, the behavior of … more

Studies of Nitrogen-containing Compounds Having Pyrethroid-like Bioactivity

Description: During recent years most of the successful developments in pyrethroids have been primarily concerned with structural or compositional variations. As a part of our continuing interest in pyrethroid insecticides, nitrogen-containing compounds having pyrethroid-like structures were synthesized. Seven prolinate compounds, N-(substituted)-phenyl-prolinates and N-carbobenzoxy-prolinates were coupled with known pyrethroid alcohols. These structural variations which "locked in" a specific conformation … more

Enzymatic desulfurization of coal

Description: Our experimental approach focuses on the use of enzymes which catalyze the addition of oxygen to organic compounds., In tailoring the application of these enzymes to coal processing, we are particularly interested in ensuring that oxidation occurs at sulfur and not at carbon-carbon bonds. Previous studies with DBT have shown that the reaction most frequently observed in microbial oxidative pathways is one in which DBT is oxidized at ring carbons. These reactions, as we have said, are accompanie… more

Nitrogen oxide abatement by distributed fuel addition

Description: The performance of the new combustor was tested. Experiments showed that this combustor has superior insulating quality than the previous one. Measured radial concentrations indicated uniform distribution of the primary fuel (coal) inside the fire tube resulting in reasonably flat concentration profiles. However, measured radial concentrations after the addition of the reburn fuel showed uneven distribution of the fuel resulting in parabolic concentration profiles, an indication of insufficient… more
