Research on elementary particle physics: Task P, Studies in theory and phenomenology of elementary particles

Description: Over the last year, work has focused on two areas: the phenomenology of quark-gluon differentiation in jets, and theoretical studies involving Dirac-like equations for various systems. Substantive progress has been made in both areas. A paper comparing details of the Lund and Herwig simulations for quark and gluon jets has been written and accepted by Physical Review D. A paper describing a new type of Dirac equation for the relativistic harmonic oscillator, and finding solutions thereof, has b… more

Data telecommunications at the CSCF

Description: At Brookhaven National Laboratory data telecommunication for remote job entry, interactive time sharing, networking, graphics, and special purpose links became increasingly important--they now rival the more traditional over-the-counter traffic. The BNL Central Scientific Computing Facility (CSCF) responded to this need with a number of developments. The latest and most comprehensive of these is a ''front-end'' communications system built around MODCOMP II computers. To put this project into it… more

The Scalable Coherent Interface and related standards projects

Description: The Scalable Coherent Interface (SCI) project (IEEE P1596) found a way to avoid the limits that are inherent in bus technology. SCI provides bus-like services by transmitting packets on a collection of point-to-point unidirectional links. The SCI protocols support cache coherence in a distributed-shared-memory multiprocessor model, message passing, I/O, and local-area-network-like communication over fiber optic or wire links. VLSI circuits that operate parallel links at 1000 MByte/s and serial … more

Tracking and vertex finding with drift chambers and neural networks

Description: Finding tracks, track vertices and event vertices with neural networks from drift chamber signals is discussed. Simulated feed-forward neural networks have been trained with back-propagation to give track parameters using Monte Carlo simulated tracks in one case and actual experimental data in another. Effects on network performance of limited weight resolution, noise and drift chamber resolution are given. Possible implementations in hardware are discussed. 7 refs., 10 figs.

Assessment study of superconducting fault-current limiters operating at 77K

Description: The possible impact of nitrogen-cooled superconductors on the design and cost of superconducting fault-current limiters is assessed by considering the technical specifications such devices must meet and by comparing material properties of 77-K and 4-K superconductors. The main advantage of operating superconductors at 77 K is that the refrigeration operating cost is reduced by a factor of up to 25, and the refrigeration capital cost is reduced by a factor of up to 10. The heat capacity of 77 K … more

Offline Computing and Networking

Description: This note summarizes the work of the Offline Computing and Networking Group. The report is divided into two sections; the first deals with the computing and networking requirements and the second with the proposed way to satisfy those requirements. In considering the requirements, we have considered two types of computing problems. The first is CPU-intensive activity such as production data analysis (reducing raw data to DST), production Monte Carlo, or engineering calculations. The second is p… more

Computer Facilities for Isabelle Data Handling

Description: The analysis of data produced by Isabelle experiments will need a large system of computers. Included in the array should be a substantial computer system at each Isabelle intersection in use. These systems must include enough computer power to keep experimenters aware of the status of the experiment. This will require at least one very fast sophisticated processor in the system, the size depending on the experiment. Other features of the intersection systems must be a good, high speed graphic … more

Models of human operators: Their need and usefulness for improvement of advanced control systems and control rooms

Description: Models of human behavior and cognition (HB C) are necessary for understanding the total response of complex systems. Many such model have come available over the past thirty years for various applications. Many potential model users remain skeptical about their practically, acceptability, and usefulness. Such hesitancy stems in part from disbelief in the ability to model complex cognitive processes, and a belief that relevant human behavior can be adequately accounted for through the use of com… more

Audit trails and PC control on Novell networks

Description: Although Novell Netware 286 provides excellent access control at both the server and the directory level, the record they make available through the accounting function leaves much to be desired. This paper presents two programs; the first is a BASIC program that converts the output of Novell's PAUDIT command into single line audit trails, providing an auditable record of server access. The second program, written in dBase III+, can be used to insure that all PC's accessing the LAN are recorded… more
