The reactivity evaluation of PITA-IP22 demonstration load, Supp. 3

Description: PITA-IP22, SUPP II has pointed out that distinct processing advantages may be realized by simplifying the E-N core by minimizing the number of different kinds of charges and the number of target slugs per charge. In an effort to experimentally verify the theoretical effects of converting to a simplified loading, a 102-tube test section, consisting of three 5.0 inch Li-Al target elements per tube was recently charged in H Reactor, under authority of the PITA supplement. The purpose of this docum… more

Hunt N Peck: A program to perform zone loading calculations on the IBM-7090

Description: Presently, there is no standard technique in use by all assigned physicists to actually calculate required reactor loading changes. Basically, loading changes are made by determining the number of enrichment columns needed for equilibrium operation following startup; this is usually based upon past experience with relatively similar reactor conditions. Selection of locations for placement or removal of the enrichment then involves the application of information gleaned from temperature maps, pr… more

Calculations on close-coupled processing for Pu-238 recovery

Description: Irradiation of Np-237 in Hanford reactors and recovery of the Pu-238 product in a close-coupled separations plant is currently of interest. Such a concept has the potential of increasing in Pu-238 production rates. The results of initial calculations on the subject are presented herein to aid further study and evaluation. Much of the information is presented in terms of the aqueous target system proposed in earlier work (i.e., irradiation and processing of an aqueous neptunium solution). Howeve… more

TRAJECTORIES FOR A RECTANGULAR MAGNET WITH UNIFORM FIELD

Description: To aid in orientation of a hodoscope system using a rectangular magnet with a uniform field, projections of the trajectory of particles in the horizontal and ventical planes are calculated approximately. Fringing field effects are represented by adding a correction to the length of the magnet and assuming the field to be uniform over the total effective length. The assumption that the source lies in the median plane of the magnet is also used in treating the vertical motion. (D.C.W.)

Dynamic Void Fraction Measurement System

Description: Various methods and techniques of measuring void fraction in boiling heat transfer media are discussed. Details of 17 void-fraction measurement systems are abstracted. A dynamic void-fraction measurement system is described, capable of continuously measuring void fraction at any position along a 12-ft test section. Void fraction (the ratio of vapor volume to total volume of a 2- phase mixture) is measured in boiling organic coolant contained by a test section of 5/8-in.-OD nickel tube with 0.04… more

Mn$sup 56$ COINCIDENCE COUNTING FACILITY

Description: A two-stage absolute counting facility for large liquid samples of aqueous Mn/sup 56/SO/sub 4/, primarily intended for better than 1% precision measurements of neutron source strengths by the manganese bath technique, is described. Two-liter samples are counted in a gamma - gamma coincidence arrangement that greatly improves long-term reproducibility at some sacrifice in counting statistics; this sacrifice is, however, lessened through a novel pulse- distribution scheme that allows fall utiliza… more

A field method using uranine to measure penetration of high-efficiency filters

Description: A method has been developed to field test high-efficiency air cleaning filters to measure their efficiency in removing aerosols from contaminated air streams. In certain instances, the efficiency of air cleaning filters may be measured prior to installation. For example, high-efficiency filters of the absolute'' type are measured for their efficiency of removal of a 0.3 micron dioctylphthalate aerosol from an air stream prior to use at AEC installations. However, defects may occur during or fol… more

MOUND LABORATORY PROGRESS REPORT FOR JULY 1963

Description: 8 7 6 2 ; 7 4 7 6 : 7 8 : : ; half life of 3.781 plus or minus 0.010 years based on calorimetric measuiements. The calorimetric assay of the sample will be continued ior several years to decrease the probable error. The decay scheme for /sup 209/Po--/sup 209/Po/ isitopic mixtures is being determined. The gamma spectrum is being studied using two sources of different isotopic composition. Definite peaks were established at 76, 260, 300, 575, and 9l0 kev. Various multiple coincidence experiments … more

The Structure of Heavy Nuclei: A Study of Very Weak Alpha Branching

Description: Very weak alpha branching in heavy elements was studied by a recently developed coincidence technique. This technique makes it possible to measure the energies and intensities of both alpha -particle groups and de-exciting radiation, even when the transition intensities are as low as 10/sup -8/ relative to the most intense alpha group. Twenty alpha -particle emitters from Po/sup 214/ to Fm were examined. 00+ states (beta vibrations) were observed in six even-even nuclei, and analogous states we… more

Instrumentation for Fission Fragment Energy Correlation Experiments

Description: From International Conference on Nuclear Physics with Reactor Neutrons, Argonne, Ill., Oct. 1963. Experiments were performed in which the kinetic energies of correlated fragment pairs from thermal- and resonance-neutron-induced fission were measured. In addition, a three-parameter ternary fission experiment was performed in which the energies of correlated fragments were measured in coincidence with the energy of a third emitted particle, usually a long-range alpha particle. The detectors were … more

PROPERTIES OF RADIOACTIVE Re$sup 18$$sup 9$

Description: The isotope Re/sup 189/ was produced by fsst neutron irradiation of osmium and by the ( alpha ,p) reaction on tungsten. The rhenium was separated chemically from the target material, and beta, gamma, and internal conversion spectra were measured. The mass assignment is confirmed by the observation of eleven electromagnetic transitions in the Os/sup 189/ daughter, including the 30.8-kev isomeric transition (8 hr), all of which were known from the decay of Ir/ sup 189/. Re/sup 189/ has a half-lif… more

MOUND LABORATORY PROGRESS REPORT FOR NOVEMBER, 1963

Description: As a part of the effort to establish the vapor pressure of /sup 3/He as the international temperature scale between 0.3 and 3.2 deg K, the manometric contections from /sup 4/He to /sup 3/He are being determined. The results of a single run did not agree with the predicted values. Calculations indicated that a two to one thermal diffusion column cascade is more efficient than a three to one cascade for separation of neon isotopes. Gaseous impurities in neon were reduced from 3.40 to 0.26% by pas… more

Measurement of Spectral Distribution of Positron Flux in an Infinite Copper Medium Containing Cu$sup 64$

Description: The spectral distribution of the flux of positrons inside a beta radioactive medium was experimentally determined using an anthracene coincidence scintillation spectrometer. Positrons leaving a copper cavity source containing Cu/sup 64/ were absorbed in a thin anthracene crystal. The light pulse from the anthracene was recorded in a 256 channel analyzer if a NaI scintillation spectrometer nearby recorded simultaneously a count under the total absorption peak for annihilation radiation. Thus, di… more

Design and Test of a Diaphragm Pump for Liquid Metals

Description: Technical report. From Abstract : "Details are provided on the construction and operation of a two-stage diaphragm pump successfully used for the first time in liquid metal service. From the results of 5,376 hr. test of the pump it was concluded that it is well suited to the pumping of liquid metals at low flow rates where pulsating flow can be tolerated and also where remote operation is required. Operating temperatures and pressures are limited only by the availability of suitable materials o… more

Trimethyllactamide

Description: Technical report. From "3. Methods of Preparation" : "Pivadehyde cyanohydrin can be prepared by the reaction of pivadehyde with anhydrous HCN2 or by the sodium bisulfite process. Trimethyllactamide can be prepared by hydrolysis of pivaldehyde cyanohydrin with cold concentrated sulfuric acid. The procedure described here differs in the scale of preparation an in the use of cold fusing hydrochloric acid for hydrolizing the cyanohydrin."
