The Relationship Between Aggression and Parental Contact in Institutionalized Mentally Retarded Males

Description: The purpose of this study is to determine the possible effect of varying amounts of parental contact on the behavior of the institutionalized child. The effect that is being investigated is overt aggression. Also, the variable of peer support will be studied because of its important role when there is a lack of parental support.

The Effects of a Structured and Nonpermissive Play Therapy Program on a Group of Profoundly and Severly Retarded Children

Description: The primary problem of this thesis is to determine the effect of a modified, structured, and basically non-permissive play therapy program upon the intellectual, social, and behavioral level of a group of profoundly and severely retarded children.

Success-Striving and Failure-Avoidant Aspiration Patterns of Institutionalized Mental Retardates

Description: The design of this experiment was developed to investigate the presence of success-striving and failure-avoidant motivational patterns in the level of aspiration behavior of retarded subjects. The primary objective of this study is to show that success-strivers are present in mentally retarded groups, even if in the minority.

Employer Attitude toward the Mentally Retarded - an Application of a Cognitive Theory of Attitude Structure

Description: It was the purpose of this study to investigate some of the factors related to employers' attitudes toward the hiring of a mentally retarded individual. More specifically, an attempt was made to answer the question, "Why do employers hold favorable or unfavorable attitudes toward the hiring of the retarded?"

Relationship between Progress of Retarded Subjects in an Experimental Program and Selected Individual Characteristics

Description: The general purpose of the present study was to ascertain if particular characteristics of mentally retarded children are associated with progress in terms of intellectual and social competence traits after inclusion in an experimental therapeutic program such as the Foster Grandparent Project.

The Effects of Concrete, Symbolic, and Verbal Reinforcement of the Discrimination Learning of Moderately and Severely Retarded Boys

Description: The present study is an attempt to determine which of several different types of reinforcers is most effective in discrimination learning using institutionalized mentally retarded boys of different intellectual levels as subjects. If one type of reinforcement works more effectively in conditioning one level of institutionalized mentally retarded subject, then that type of reinforcement could be used to greater advantage in controlling behavior than some other, less effective kind of reinforcer.

A Study of the Effect of a Creative Dance Program on the Physical Fitness Level of Mentally Retarded Subjects at Denton State School Denton,Texas

Description: The study was undertaken for the following purposes: 1. To determine the present level of physical fitness of a group of mentally retarded girls at Denton State School. 2. To determine the effect of a creative dance program, devised by the author, on the physical fitness level of a group of mentally retarded girls at Denton State School. 3. To determine the feasibility of the inclusion of creative dance in an overall physical education program for mentally retarded girls.

The Effects of Music and Operant Conditioning on Gross Motor Activity of Profound Mental Retardates

Description: It has not yet been demonstrated that music can be used therapeutically with profoundly retarded children. One way these children might be helped to respond to music, and therapeutically benefit from it, would be to use operant conditioning in an effort to enhance gross motor activity and then progressively shape responses until more complex behavior patterns are formed. Once these children can respond motorically in the presence of musical stimuli, continuation of responding may be possible by pairing motor activity with musical stimuli. This experiment investigated the effects of operant conditioning and music on the motor activity of profoundly retarded children in an effort to determine the therapeutic usefulness of music with such children.

A Study of the Rigidity of Regional Boundaries as Found in Mental Retardates

Description: Previous studies on retardates with rigidity of boundaries phenomena have not been concerned with the presence of brain injury. The primary objective of this experiment was to ascertain the degree of difference in rigidity between brain injured and non-brain injured retardates.

Hyperphenylalaninemia and Mental Retardation : The Effects of a High Maternal Phenylalanine Blood Concentration on Mouse Offspring

Description: This study was concerned with setting up a similar situation wherein pregnant mice had an abnormally high phenylalanine metabolism. Through physical and intellectual assessment of their offspring, it would then be possible to determine what effects the abnormal metabolism had during pregnancy and whether or not a restricted diet need be resumed at that time.

An Investigation of the Relationship between Intelligence, Self-Concept and Social Competency among the Mentally Retarded

Description: The purpose of this study is to add to the body of knowledge concerning intelligence, self-concept, and social competency as related to the habilitation of retardates by investigating the following problem: what is the relationship between intelligence, self-concept, and social competency among the mentally retarded?

Proposed Guidelines for an Industrial Arts Program for the Mentally Retarded in Public School Systems

Description: The problem was concerned with determining what skills were necessary for the employment of the mentally retarded and what guidelines may be used in developing these skills in the secondary level industrial arts program. The study developed guidelines which should prove useful to an industrial arts instructor having mentally retarded students in his classroom. The guidelines were based upon the results of an industrial survey and available literature.

The Effects of Musical Stimuli on the Gross Motor Activity of Profound Mental Retardates

Description: It was the purpose of this present study to investigate the effects of two types of music, tonic and sedative, on the gross motor activity of profound mental retardates. The primary objective was to determine if therapeutic benefits resulting from the application of music could be extended to profound retardates as has already been demonstrated with other levels of retardation.

Effects of Frustration Tolerance Training on Young Institutionalized Retarded Children

Description: The major problem investigated was to ascertain the extent to which a training program designed specifically to increase frustration tolerance would reduce selected behavioral problems in institutionalized mentally retarded children. Of lesser importance was the problem of examining the extent to which the prescribed training program had differential effects on brain-injured and non-brain-injured retarded children.

Employee Satisfaction and Performance in Managerial and Non-Managerial Levels of a State Institution for the Mentally Retarded

Description: The present sbudy is an effort to seek information from a type of organization rarely studied along the lines of employee satisfaction's correlation to job performance—a state institution for the mentally retarded—which will shed significant light on the dynamics of this question. It is unique in that it focuses closely on the specific job duties of both managerial and non-managerial employees as a basis for understanding the relationship between employee satisfaction and performance.

A Study of Verbal and Material Reinforcers and Their Effect on Socially Deprived and Socially Satiated Mental Defectives

Description: The primary purpose was to determine the relative effects of drive level, degree of mental retardation, and nature of reinforcer on effectiveness of operant conditioning of mentally retarded children. Embodied in the general purpose were the following sub-purposes: 1. To determine if mentally retarded subjects of differing induced drive levels (defined as satiated, nondeprived, and deprived) learn a simple discrimination problem at different rates. 2. To determine if the nature of the reinforcer (social versus material) produces different effects on performance of the task. 3. To determine the extent to which retardates of differing levels of intelligence learn the task. 4. To determine the degree of interaction among the three main treatment variables (drive level, degree of retardation, and nature of reinforcer) simultaneously.
