Saving Man Labor in Sugar Beet Fields

Description: "By using bigger implements and more horses per man, many sugar-beet growers have greatly reduced their expenses for man labor and often at the same time have been able to cover more ground per day than before. This bulletin tells how the more successful farmers of the several American sugar-beet regions are speeding up production and saving man power by thus increasing their efficiency in the utilization of larger teams and improved mechanical power." -- p. 2

Saving Man Labor in Sugar-Beet Fields

Description: Revised edition. "By using larger equipment many sugar-beet growers have greatly reduced their requirements for man labor and at the same time have been able to accomplish more work in a given time. This bulletin tells how man labor can be saved and production speeded up in the several American sugar-beet regions through the use of large machines and units of power." -- p. ii

Small Irrigation Pumping Plants

Description: "Throughout the United States are many farms, parts or all of which could be irrigated by pumping from either ponds or streams or farm wells. This bulletin is intended to furnish owners or operators of such farms with information that will give them some indication of initial and operating costs and enable them to determine whether soil and water suitable for irrigation are available and what kind of irrigation plant and equipment will be most satisfactory for their purpose. Having examined the… more

Dusting Machinery for Cotton Boll Weevil Control

Description: "This bulletin is intended to aid the prospective purchaser of dusting machinery for cotton boll weevil control in selecting a satisfactory model and one adapted to the needs of his particular farming conditions. Different localities frequently require different types of machinery, and the farmer should make sure he is securing one suitable for his needs." -- p. 2

Screen Sizing of Coal, Ores and Other Minerals

Description: From Introduction: "The data in this bulletin were obtained during an investigation of screening practice by the University of Illinois engineering experiment station and the United States Bureau of Mines under a cooperative agreement between them and the State of Illinois Geographical Survey Division. The present investigation was limited to a study of screening as applied in preparing mineral products with the expectation of obtaining more comprehensive information on screening machinery."

Permissible Coal-Handling Equipment: Approved from January, 1926, to December, 1930, Inclusive

Description: From Description of Permissible Loaders and Conveyors: "The following descriptions of permissible loading machines and conveyors now included in the bureau's list of approved equipment are given to indicate to mine operators not only the types available but also show to some extent the special features employed in designing machines that minimize the hazard of gas and dust ignitions. Furthermore, the authors hope that the descriptions will have some value to manufactures who may contemplate ent… more

Heat powered refrigeration compressor. Semi-annual technical report

Description: The objective of this program is to develop and improve the design of previously started prototypes of the Heat Powered Refrigeration Compressor. To build this prototype and ready it for testing by the University of Evansville is another goal. This prototype will be of similar capacity as the compressor that will eventually be commercially produced. This unit can operate on almost any moderate temperature water heat source. This heat source could include such applications as industrial waste he… more

Replacing the Horse

Description: I have been working with horses as imagery for about seven years and my problem in lieu of thesis continued along this vein by researching the roles of the horse in history, specifically mobility, and developing work that creates visual links between the past and present roles of horses. I am a printmaker and the work involved in the project consists of prints that use layers of related images and juxtaposition of unrelated images to accomplish my goals of cohesion between horses and the machin… more

Ultrahigh Vacuum Techniques

Description: "Investigations were continued on the characteristics of zeolite traps and on a small cryopump. Studies of an all metal vacuum system indicated that this system is superior to glass systems when operated at elevated temperatures. The major contribution to the gas evolution is hydrogen. The characteristics of an electron multiplier operating under ultrahigh vacuum procedures were studied. The desorption of gas by photons is being investigated."

Vibration-Based Damage Detection in Rotating Machinery

Description: Damage detection as determined from changes in the vibration characteristics of a system has been a popular research topic for the last thirty years. Numerous damage identification algorithms have been proposed for detecting and locating damage in structural and mechanical systems. To date, these damage-detection methods have shown mixed results. A particular application of vibration-based damage detection that has perhaps enjoyed the greatest success is that of damage detection in rotating mac… more
