Description: From introduction: As a result of recently initiated programs such as the San Francisco Bay Region Environment and Resources Planning Study, planners in the San Francisco Bay region are becoming increasingly aware of the types and possible uses earth-science data. These data encompasses a wide spectrum of disciplines including hydrology, topography, geology, geomorphology, and seismology. If properly integrated with the planner's competence in demography, sociology, economics, and other fields, earth-science data can be invaluable for evaluating and controlling many critical environment problems in urban areas.

The Miocene Aquifer System in Mississippi

Description: From introduction: A large amount of information is available on the aquifers of Mississippi. Reports resulting from various areal studies have described the ground-water resources of the areas concerned, but no reports dealing specifically with statewide occurrence of individual aquifer systems have been prepared previously. A series of "aquifer atlases" was deemed the most effective way to point out the character, the potential, and the extent of development of the aquifers and thereby provide water managers with data needed for efficient utilization of available resources. This report on Miocene aquifer system is the first in the series.

U.S. Geological Survey Research in Radioactive Waste Disposal--Fiscal Year 1981

Description: Abstract: The report summarizes progress on geologic and hydrologic research related to the disposal of radioactive wastes. The research is described according to whether it is related most directly to (1) high-level and transuranic wastes; (2) low-level wastes, or (3) uranium mill tailings. Included is research applicable to the identification and geohydrologic characterization of waste-disposal sites, to investigations of specific sites where wastes have been stored, and to studies of regions or environments where waste-disposal sites might be located. A significant part of the activity is concerned with techniques and methods for characterizing disposal sites and studies of geologic and hydrologic processes related to the transport and (or) retention of waste radionuclides.

Water Resources of the North Coast Limestone Area, Puerto Rico

Description: From introduction: The North Coast Limestone area is one of the two most important ground-water provinces of Puerto Rico--the other being the South Coast Alluvial aquifer. The investigation of the water resources of the South Coast has progressed to the point that at this time (mid-1971) an electric-analog model of the area is being prepared. The hydrology of the North Coast Limestones, however, was never investigated as a whole before this investigation, and, therefore, this study was designed to assess the most important hydrolic features of the area.

Physical and Hydrologic Environments of the Mulberry Coal Reserves in Eastern Kansas

Description: From introduction: The U.S. Geological Survey is currently conducting a two-phase investigation designed to provide hydrologic information about the coal-producing area in Miami, Linn, and Bourbon Counties of eastern Kansas (fig. 1). This report presents information to satisfy the objectives of the first phase of the investigation. These objectives are to: (1) assemble and interpret existing hydrologic data; (2) describe the physical and hydrologic environments based on existing data; and (3) determine additional data needed to evaluate the impacts of coal mining on the hydrology of the study area.

Reconnaissance of Ground-Water Quality, Eastern Snake River Basin, Idaho
