Description: Laboratory work was continued on hydriding of zirconium sponge and rod under varying conditions of temperature (400 to 900/sup 0/C) and pressure (0-1000 torr) to determine optimum conditions for the formation of hydrides with desirable mechanical properties. Titanium sponge and rod were also hydrided for comparison. Zirconium and titanium samples containing tritium were prepared and initial leach data were obtained. Water reuse achieved by zero discharge of aqueous waste

Description: Plans for zero discharge of aqueous waste from ERDA's nuclear weapons plant near Denver are discussed. Two plants - a process waste treatment facility now under construction, and a reverse osmosis desalting plant now under design, will provide total reuse of waste water for boiler feed and cooling tower supply. Seventy million gallons of water per year will be conserved and downstream municipalities will be free of inadvertent pollution hazards.

Tritium Processing and Containment Technology for Fusion Reactors, Annual Report: July 1975-June 1976

Description: The hydrogen permeabilities of selected metals, alloys, and multiplex preparations that are of interest to fusion reactor technology are being characterized. A high-vacuum hydrogen-permeation apparatus has been constructed for this purpose. A program of studies has been initiated to develop design details for the tritium-handling systems of near-term fusion reactors. This program has resulted in a better definition of reactor-fuel-cycle and enrichment requirements and has helped to identify maj… more

Search for anti-neutrino induced muon+ e- events

Description: The authors have examined 1200 interactions with visible energies greater than 7.5 GeV produced by an anti-neutrino beam in the Fermilab 15-foot bubble chamber filled with a light neon hydrogen mixture. They have found one event with a {mu}{sup +}e{sup -} and hadrons in the final state, but with no evidence of strange particle production. This event may be an example of dilepton production by an anti-neutrino interaction, but other interpretations are possible. With 90% confidence, they conclud… more

Use of solar energy in the production of channel catfish. Final report

Description: No catfish are grown commercially in eastern Kentucky due primarily to a growing season approximately three weeks too short to provide the minimum 180 day feeding season. This research project was designed to test the feasibility of using solar energy to heat pond water enough to lengthen the feeding season the required number of days. The procedure involved the heating of a small starter pond by covering it with a solar swimming pool cover. Fingerling catfish were stocked in the small pond in … more

Study of practical cycles for geothermal power plants. Interim report, June 15, 1975-March 31, 1976

Description: The preliminary analysis is described in a study of practical cycles for geothermal power plants. The analysis is based on three different brines whose temperatures and composition span the range that is of practical interest for power generation. Only two kinds of cycles were considered in the analysis - the steam turbine cycle and the binary cycle, in which energy from the geothermal fluid is transferred to a secondary working fluid in a closed Rankine cycle. The performance of several condid… more

Effects of variations of selected repository design parameters for salt and granite host rocks

Description: Perhaps the most important design consideration is the heat generated by the spent fuel assemblies or the high-level waste being placed in the repository. The sensitivity of repository design to this heat is reflected by the definition of temperature and thermochemical criteria. To assure environmental and occupational safety, limits may be placed on such parameters as spent fuel or waste temperature, canister temperature, rock temperature, strength-to-stress ratio of the excavated openings, su… more

Influence of lateral mass efflux on free convection boundary layers in a saturated porous medium. Technical report No. 13

Description: The effects of lateral mass efflux with prescribed temperature and velocity on vertical free convection boundary layers in a saturated porous medium at high Rayleigh numbers are studied analytically. Within the framework of boundary layer theory, similarity solutions are obtained for the special case where the prescribed temperature and velocity of the fluid vary as x/sup lambda/ and x/sup (lambda-1)/2/ respectively. The effects of mass efflux on surface heat transfer rate and boundary layer th… more

Similarity solutions for convection of groundwater adjacent to horizontal impermeable surfaces with axisymmetric temperature distribution. Technical report No. 14

Description: The axisymmetric buoyancy-induced groundwater flow adjacent to horizontal impermeable surfaces with wall temperature being a power function of radius is discussed in this paper. With the boundary layer simplifications, the governing non-linear partial differential equations can be transformed into a coupled pair of non-linear ordinary differential equations with two-point boundary conditions that can be integrated numerically by established techniques. Simple algebraic expressions for boundary … more
