IBA in deformed nuclei

Description: The structure and characteristic properties and predictions of the IBA in deformed nuclei are reviewed, and compared with experiment, in particular for /sup 168/Er. Overall, excellent agreement, with a minimum of free parameters (in effect, two, neglecting scale factors on energy differences), was obtained. A particularly surprising, and unavoidable, prediction is that of strong ..beta.. ..-->.. ..gamma.. transitions, a feature characteristically absent in the geometrical model, but manifest em… more

Proton decay: 1982

Description: Employing the current world average ..lambda../sub MS/ = 0.160 GeV as input, the minimal Georgi-Glashow SU(5) model predicts sin/sup 2/theta/sub W/(m/sub W/) = 0.214, m/sub b//m/sub tau/ approx. = 2.8 and tau/sub p/ approx. = (0.4 approx. 12) x 10/sup 29/ yr. The first two predictions are in excellent agreement with experiment; but the implied proton lifetime is already somewhat below the present experimental bound. In this status report, uncertainties in tau/sub p/ are described and effects of… more

Higgs hunting

Description: The phenomenology of the Higgs boson in the standard SU(2) x U(1) electroweak model is reviewed. We compare signatures and cross sections for various Higgs production mechanisms: (1) toponium radiative decay (xi ..-->.. H/sup 0/..gamma..); (2) gluon gluon fusion (gg ..-->.. H/sup 0/); (3) Compton-like process (gc ..-->.. H/sup 0/c); and (4) bremsstrahlungs at Z/sup 0/ resonance. It is argued that new detection techniques for heavy particle identification could be helpful in triggering the rare … more

Higgs mass scales and matter-antimatter oscillations in grand unified theories

Description: A general discussion of mass scales in grand unified theories is presented, with special emphasis on Higgs scalars which mediate neutron-antineutron (n-anti n) and hydrogen-antihydrogen (H-anti H) oscillations. It is shown that the analogue of survival hypothesis for fermions naturally makes such particles superheavy, thus leading to unobservable lifetimes. If this hypothesis is relaxed, an interesting possibility of potentially observable n-anti n and H-anti H transitions, mutually related ari… more

Group theoretic approaches to nuclear and hadronic collective motion

Description: Three approaches to nuclear and hadronic collective motion are reviewed, compared and contrasted: the standard symmetry approach as typified by the Interacting Boson Model, the kinematic symmetry group approach of Gell-Mann and Tomonaga, and the recent direct construction by Buck. 50 references.

QCD diffraction: a critical phenomenon reflecting both confinement and chiral-symmetry breaking

Description: Arguments are presented for studying soft diffractive physics at anti p-p colliders in terms of Critical Pomeron Reggeon Field Theory. It is emphasized that both confinement and chiral-symmetry breaking play a vital role in the occurrence of the Critical Pomeron in QCD. SU(3) is the unique strong-interaction gauge group giving the Critical Pomeron and the maximum number of quarks allowed by asymptotic freedom is required for criticality.

Geothermal energy planning and communication for native Americans. Final report. Draft

Description: The purpose was to explore and develop geothermal energy resources on Indian lands. Activities included the following: (1) continued review of Indian communities and their potential for geothermal energy development; (2) introduced tribes to the availability of geothermal energy and removed the barriers to the implementation of this energy source; (3) provided information by telephone and by mailing packages of information; (4) published articles on geothermal energy development in the UIPA new… more

Minimally Extended Elctroweak Gauge Theories in SO(10) and E/sub 6/

Description: The possibility of minimally extending the standard SU(2)/sub L/xU(1) electroweak theory within the context of SO(10) and E/sub 6/ grand unification by adding U(1) factors is explored. The neutrino neutral-current interactions in these schemes are arranged to coincide with the standard-model predictions. Limits on the masses of the extra Z's generated by these U(1) factors are obtained by considering other parity-violating effects. Additional Z's as light as 2.5 to 3.0 times the standard model … more

Flavor-changing Z/sup 0/ decay

Description: Chapter I reviews the phenomenological situation. Simple estimates of various rates are also provided in order to convey the physical intuition necessary to guide one through the equations and numbers that follow. Chapter II presents technical aspects of the general flavor changing Z/sup 0/ decay calculation, with emphasis on the integration scheme used. Chapter III describes a number of nontrivial checks on the calculation that were performed. Chapter IV contains the entire general algebraic r… more

Measurement of nu/sub e/ and anti nu/sub e/ elastic scattering as a test of the standard model

Description: Various tests of standard SU(2) x U(1) model of weak interactions which can be performed by measurements of electron and muon neutrino-electron elastic scattering are reviewed. Electron neutrino-electron elastic scattering has both a neutral current part as well as a charged current part, and therefore offers a unique place to measure the interference of these two amplitudes. A measurement of the y-dependence of neutrino-electron elastic scattering can separately measure g/sub V/ and g/sub A/ a… more

Matter-antimatter oscillations and neutrino mass

Description: A discussion of neutron-antineutron (n- anti n) and hydrogen-antihydrogen (H- anti H) transitions is presented. An SU(2)/sub L/ x U(1) x SU(3)/sub c/ model with spontaneously broken global B-L symmetry is shown to predict the interesting connection between oscillation times T/sub n- anti n/, T/sub H- anti H/, neutrino mass and the mass of a doubly charged Higgs scalar. A case of B-L as a gauge symmetry is discussed in the context of SU(2)/sub L/ x SU(2)/sub R/ x U(1)/sub B-L/ x SU(3)/sub c/ gau… more

Testing the standard model

Description: We summarize here the results of the standard model group which has studied the ways in which different facilities may be used to test in detail what we now call the standard model, that is SU/sub c/(3) x SU(2) x U(1). The topics considered are: W/sup + -/, Z/sup 0/ mass, width; sin/sup 2/theta/sub W/ and neutral current couplings; W/sup +/W/sup -/, W..gamma..; Higgs; QCD; toponium and naked quarks; glueballs; mixing angles; and heavy ions.

Is fractional electric charge problematic for QCD

Description: A model of broken QCD is described here; SU/sub 3//sup c/ is broken to SO/sub 3//sup g/ (g for glow) such that color triplets become glow triplets. With this breaking pattern, there should exist low-mass, fractionally-charged diquark states that are not strongly bound to nuclei, but are rarely produced at present accelerator facilities. The breaking of QCD can be done with a 27/sup c/, in which case, this strong interaction theory is easily embedded in unified models such as those based on SU/s… more
