A Profile of Workers' Experiences and Preparedness in Responding to Underground Mine Fires

Description: The purpose of this study was to determine mine workers' state of fire-fighting preparedness and the technology being used to detect and respond to underground coal mine fires. To investigate this problem, 214 underground coal miners were interviewed by U.S. Bureau of Mines researchers. Frequency distributions of workers' responses are presented in this report, along with segments of narrative accounts, to profile miners' fire-fighting capabilities. The data indicated that much variability exists from mine to mine and that there are several important changes operators may undertake in order to make miners better prepared to deal with fire underground: select appropriate sensors, establish and test a warning and communication protocol, construct a system capable of delivering hundreds of gallons of water per minute for sustained periods, institute formal fire preparedness audits, develop case studies of events that occur at an operation to use as teaching and assessment tools, and provide structured practice that can be incorporated into fire drills.

Description: From preface: This issue of the Manual of Fire-Loss Prevention, the first edition of which was published in 1934, includes revisions and additions made in part to cover improvements in the past 10 years in methods of preventing and controlling fires. Such methods remain dependent largely on the elimination of preventable fires and abatement of loss from those that originate, by the use of appropriate designs and materials in building construction and the installation of applicable fire alarm and extinguishing equipment, to the extent justified by the hazard.

Analysis of Multiengine Transport Airplane Fire Records

Description: Memorandum presenting an analysis of commercial airplane fire records collected during a 10-year period ending July 1, 1948. Gasoline was found to be the initial combustible ignited in flight most frequently and is considered to be the most hazardous of the combustibles carried. Electrical-ignition sources are the most frequent flight-fire ignition source by a small margin, but the exhaust system is the most hazardous ignition source because it is so close to the lubricating and gasoline systems.

Junebug Clark Narrative: My father always referred to this photo as, "The Night They Tried to Burn Detroit Down." This photo appeared on the cover of Newsweek magazine in the Summer of 1967 August 7, 1967. The "Detroit Riots" as they were known lasted a full week. Wildfire Funding

Description: This report briefly describes the three categories of federal programs for wildfire protection. One is to protect the federal lands managed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service (FS), and by the U.S. Department of the Interior, whose wildfire programs are coordinated by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). A second category assists state and local governments and communities in protecting nonfederal lands; these programs are used to reduce wildland fuels, to otherwise prepare for fire control, to contain and control wildfires, and to respond after severe wildfires have burned. A third category of federal programs supports fire research, fire facilities, and improvements in forest health. The last section of this report discusses the impact of high and rising wildfire costs.

A User's Guide for RAPID, Reduction Algorithms for the Presentation of Incremental Fire Data

Description: Abstract: The Voluminous amount of data than can be collected by automatic data acquisition systems during large scale fire tests requires the use of a digital computer for the reduction of data. RAPID is a stand-alone program specifically designed to convert raw instrument voltages collected during such tests into meaningful units. The reduced data can also be used alone or in combinations to obtain quantities that require more than minimal data reduction. The program is written with the ability to accept data from a user defined data acquisition system, with the ability to check the correctness of data included. Through the use of input data provided by the user, the data can be converted into meaningful scientific units. The data can then be presented in tabular or printer plot form, or stored for further processing. This user's guide provides detailed instructions for the use of the program.
