An analytical and experimental study of the transient response of a pressure-regulating relief valve in a hydraulic circuit

Description: From Introduction: "This report presents an analysis of the response of the relief valve to sudden flow-demand changes. The analysis can be applied to the design of relief valves to satisfy given response specifications and to predict the stability of the valve in a specific hydraulic circuit. For this reason, derivatives of all the constants employed are included in the report."

Abnormal grain growth in M-252 and S-816 alloys

Description: Report discussing an experimental investigation was carried out on air- and vacuum-melted M-252 and S-816 alloys to find conditions of heating and hot-working which resulted in abnormal grain growth. The experiments were mainly limited to normal conditions of heating for hot-working and heat treatment and normal temperatures of solution treatment were used to allow grain growth after susceptibility to abnormal grain growth was developed by various experimental conditions. Results indicated that… more

Analysis and comparison with theory of flow-field measurements near a lifting rotor in the Langley full-scale tunnel

Description: From Introduction: "The time-averaged flows are considerably simpler to deal with theoretically than are the instantaneous flows, and the results of several theoretical analyses are available (refs. 2 to 6, for example). Several previous experimental investigations (see ref. 7 for a bibliography) have provided some qualitative information on the subject by the use of smoke in flight and in wind tunnels. However, quantitative measurements (refs. 8 to 10) are extremely scarce and, in general, are… more

Analytical and Experimental Investigation of Bolted Joints

Description: From Introduction: "The present paper contains the development of a recurrence formula for the bolt loads for the simplified case of a symmetrical butt joint with bolts spaced evenly in line with the applied load. The method presented herein is based on the fundamental relationship which was developed in reference 1 between the loads on any two successive bolts. The present paper also gives the results of an experimental investigation conducted to substantiate further the adequacy of the elasti… more

Tension experiments on diaphragm metals

Description: Strips of german silver, steel, copper, duralumin, nickel and brass were tested in tension in an apparatus in which the change in deflection with time was measured by means of an interferometer. This change in deflection with time caused by the application and removal of a load is defined as "drift" and "recovery," respectively. It was measured in the time interval from approximately 5 seconds to 5 hours after loading. The data are given in a series of graphs in which the drift and recovery are… more

An analysis of the stability and ultimate bending strength of multiweb beams with formed-channel webs

Description: From Introduction: "The purpose of the present paper is to develop a simple method of calculating both the stress at which initial wrinkling occurs in muti-web beams and the ultimate bending strength of beams which are susceptible to this mode of instability."

Aerodynamic Characteristics of Damping Screens

Description: From Summary: "The experimental investigation of damping screens described herein was undertaken primarily to test theories of the effects of damping screens and to obtain information on the performance of screens in oblique flow. The characteristics investigated include the damping of longitudinal and lateral components of turbulence, the effect of screens on scale, the conditions for the production of turbulence and eddies by screens, and the damping of spatial variations of mean speed."
