Addressing Environmental Externalities from Electricity Generation in South Carolina

Description: This paper gives estimates of the externalities associated with the increased likelihood of health and environmental impacts that result from exposure to pollutants emitted by electric power plants in South Carolina. A new method for estimating externalities is developed, results are presented, and policy-related implications are discussed. The results suggest that the environmental externalities are noteworthy and would affect electricity consumption if they are internalized and passed on to c… more

Microgrids: An emerging paradigm for meeting building electricityand heat requirements efficiently and with appropriate energyquality

Description: The first major paradigm shift in electricity generation, delivery, and control is emerging in the developed world, notably Europe,North America, and Japan. This shift will move electricity supply awayfrom the highly centralised universal service quality model with which weare familiar today towards a more dispersed system with heterogeneousqualities of service. One element of dispersed control is the clusteringof sources and sinks into semi-autonomous mu grids (microgrids).Research, development… more

Development of methodologies for calculating greenhouse gas emissions from electricity generation for the California climate action registry

Description: The California Climate Action Registry, which will begin operation in Fall 2002, is a voluntary registry for California businesses and organizations to record annual greenhouse gas emissions. Reporting of emissions in the Registry by a participant involves documentation of both ''direct'' emissions from sources that are under the entity's control and ''indirect'' emissions controlled by others. Electricity generated by an off-site power source is considered to be an indirect emission and must b… more

Advanced wind turbine design studies: Advanced conceptual study. Final report

Description: In conjunction with the US Department of Energy and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory`s Advanced Wind Turbine Program, the Atlantic Orient Corporation developed preliminary designs for the next generation of wind turbines. These 50 kW and 350 kW turbines are based upon the concept of simplicity. By adhering to a design philosophy that emphasizes simplicity, we project that these turbines will produce energy at extremely competitive rates which will unlock the potential of wind energy dom… more

Clean Energy Technologies: A Preliminary Inventory of the Potential for Electricity Generation

Description: The nation's power system is facing a diverse and broad set of challenges. These range from restructuring and increased competitiveness in power production to the need for additional production and distribution capacity to meet demand growth, and demands for increased quality and reliability of power and power supply. In addition, there are growing concerns about emissions from fossil fuel powered generation units and generators are seeking methods to reduce the CO{sub 2} emission intensity of … more

Maintaining Generation Adequacy in a Restructuring U.S. Electricity Industry

Description: Historically, decisions on the amounts, locations, types, and timing of investments in new generation have been made by vertically integrated utilities with approval from state public utility commissions. As the U.S. electricity industry is restructured, these decisions are being fragmented and dispersed among a variety of organizations. As generation is deregulated and becomes increasingly competitive, decisions on whether to build new generators and to retire, maintain, or repower existing un… more
