Centrifugal Distortion Corrections to Calculated Thermodynamic Functions

Description: Complete parition functions for non-rigid rotators are obtained for the linear, spherical top, and symmetric top cases, From these are derived expression giving the corrections to the thermodynamic functions due to centrifugal distortion as functions of the rotational distortion constants D. Numerical examples are given for HCN, methane, and ammonia.

A Flight-Test Study of Total-Pressure Distortion in a Thick-Lipped Nose Inlet

Description: Memorandum presenting flight tests conducted on a thick-lipped nose inlet of a transonic swept-wing aircraft. The total-pressure recovery and distortion at the compressor face were measured over the maneuvering range of the airplane for Mach numbers up to 1.03. Results regarding the radial total-pressure profile, average total-pressure recovery, and total-pressure distortion are provided.

Stress and Distortion Measurements in a 45 Degree Swept Box Beam Subjected to Bending and to Torsion

Description: Note presenting an untapered aluminum-alloy box beam, representing the main structural component of a full-span, two-spar, 45 degree swept wing with a carry-through bay, was subjected to tip bending and twisting loads and its stresses and distortions were measured. The investigation revealed that for bending, the important effect of sweep was to cause a considerable build-up of normal stress and vertical shear stress in the rear spar near the fuselage.

Investigation of effects of inlet-air velocity distortion on performance of turbojet engine

Description: To determine effect of nonuniform inlet-air velocities, a full scale, axial-flow turbojet engine was investigated in Lewis altitude wind tunnel at altitudes from 20,000 to 50,000 feet, 0.21 flight Mach number and corrected engine speeds from 77.3 percent of rated speed to rated speed. Total-pressure variations as large as 103 pounds per square foot in radial direction and 90 pounds per square foot in circumferential direction at 30,000 feet were obtained. With the distortions investigated, net … more

Analysis and Correction of the Closed Orbit Distortion for RHIC

Description: This is a review of the RHIC sensitivity to closed orbit distortion and of the errors that are the cause. There are four sections. In the first we review the analytical calculation of the expectation values of the distortion and we compare the results with those obtained with numerical calculation. The expected uncorrected closed orbit distortion is so large to cause some concern for day-one operation of RHIC which is discussed in the second section where methods are proposed for investigation.… more

Results regarding individual fan performance, comparison of fan distortion removal characteristics, and fan total-pressure loss and operating s… more

Description: Report presenting the effects of inlet-air-flow distortion on the steady-state performance of a current axial-flow turbojet engine studied in an NACA altitude test chamber at a range of altitudes and simulated Mach number of 0.8. Radial distortions of various shapes up to 22 percent of the average engine-inlet total pressure and circumferential distortions up to 26 percent were imposed. Results regarding propagation through the engine, compressor-interstage performance and stall, effects on com… more

Comparison of Source Diversity and Channel Diversity Methods on Symmetric and Fading Channels.

Description: Channel diversity techniques are effective ways to combat channel fading and noise in communication systems. In this thesis, I compare the performance of source and channel diversity techniques on fading and symmetric continuous channels. My experiments suggest that when SNR is low, channel diversity performs better, and when SNR is high, source diversity shows better performance than channel diversity.

Hardware Implementation Of Conditional Motion Estimation In Video Coding

Description: This thesis presents the rate distortion analysis of conditional motion estimation, a process in which motion computation is restricted to only active pixels in the video. We model active pixels as independent and identically distributed Gaussian process and inactive pixels as Gaussian-Markov process and derive the rate distortion function based on conditional motion estimation. Rate-Distortion curves for the conditional motion estimation scheme are also presented. In addition this thesis also … more

Fireside corrosion probes for fossil fuel combustion

Description: Electrochemical corrosion rate probes have been constructed and tested along with mass loss coupons in environments consisting of N2/O2/CO2/SO2 plus water vapor. Temperatures ranged from 450° to 700°C. Results show that electrochemical corrosion rates for ash-covered mild steel are a function of time, temperature, and gaseous environment. Correlation between the electrochemical and mass loss corrosion rates was poor.

Processing of prosthetic heart valve sounds for classification. Revision 1

Description: People with serious heart conditions have had their expected life span extended considerably with the development of the prosthetic heart valve especially with the great strides made in valve design. Even though the designs are extremely reliable, the valves are mechanical and operating continuously over a long period, therefore, structural failures can occur due to fatigue. Measuring heart sounds non-invasively in a noisy environment puts more demands on the signal processing to extract the de… more

Prediction of Part Distortion in Die Casting

Description: The die casting process is one of the net shape manufacturing techniques and is widely used to produce high production castings with tight tolerances for many industries. An understanding of the stress distribution and the deformation pattern of parts produced by die casting will result in less deviation from the part design specification, a better die design and eventually more productivity and cost savings. This report presents methods that can be used to simulate the die casting process in o… more

Thermal Distortion of SAR Hafnium Control Rod

Description: Abstract: The thermal distortion of a Y-shaped hafnium control rod heated by arrays of individually controlled radiation heaters was studied. The large axial and radial temperature gradients specified for this control rod were easily obtained with the radiation-heating method. The distortion, as measured with dial indicators, amounted to a 2-mil movement of the free end of the rod in the direction of the coolest blade.

Parental bonding, adult romantic attachment, fear of intimacy, and cognitive distortions among child molesters.

Description: Path models assessed different models of influential order for parental bonding; adult romantic attachment; views of self, world/others, and the future; the fear of intimacy; and cognitive distortions among child molesters and non-offending controls. Child molesters receiving sex offender treatment reported more problematic parental bonding; insecure adult romantic attachment; negative views of self, world/others, and the future; a greater fear of intimacy, and more cognitive distortions regard… more

[Repair of a cable as it relates to the North Pacific Acoustic Laboratory]

Description: The ultimate limits of long-range sonar are imposed by ocean variability and the ambient sound field. Scattering from internal waves limits the temporal and spatial coherence of the received signal. Low frequency noise is dominated by shipping and ultimately, by wave-breaking processes. The resulting granularity of the noise field can be exploited for detection and localization purposes. The ultimate objective is to understand the fundamental limits to signal processing imposed by these ocean p… more

Soft x-ray spectrometer operation at the National Ignition Facility

Description: Radiation drive diagnostics during the NIF early light campaign was supported by an 18 channel soft x-ray spectrometer (Dante). In order to achieve a measurement accuracy of 2% in radiation temperature absolute calibration of the individual channels was necessary and signal distortion through long transmission lines had to be compensated for as well. For fast signals the signal attenuation due to the long (50m) cables amounted to {approx} 20% {at} 100MHz, which was corrected by a cable compensa… more

Measurements of spatial and frequency coherence of an equatorial hf path during spread-F

Description: In August 1990, the authors set up an hf path on the equatorial path between Maloelap Atoll and Bikini Atoll. This path, which had a range of 702 km, reflected in the ionosphere approximately 100 km north of the Altair radar location on Kwajalein. Transmitters at Maloelap broadcasted four cw tones within bandwidth of either 4 kHz, 9 kHz, or 70 kHz to be used to determine frequency coherence and also a phase-coded pseudo random sequence with a bandwidth of 60 kHz (channel probe) to be used to de… more
