Corrected Optical Pyrometer Readings

Description: Report presenting a table of corrected optical pyrometer readings which enables optical pyrometer users to convert observed temperature immediately to the true temperature, if the effective emissivity of the material being observed is known. The table gives observed temperatures from 1,000 to 3,000ºK in increments of 5 degrees, from 3,000 to 5,000ºK in increments of 10 degrees, from 5,000 to 10,000ºK in increments of 50 degrees, and from 10,000 to 39,900ºK in increments of 100 degrees. For thes… more

Conversion of Energy in Cross-Sectional Divergences Under Different Conditions of Inflow

Description: "This investigation treats the conversion of energy in conically divergent channels with constant opening ratio and half included angle of from 2.6 to 90 degrees, the velocity distribution in the entrance section being varied from rectangular distribution to fully developed turbulence by changing the length of the approach. The energy conversion is not completed in the exit section of the diffuser; complete conversion requires a discharge length which depends upon the included angle and the vel… more

Systems of Electrical Units

Description: Report describing the various systems of measurement used in the literature on electricity and magnetism, with respect to their units. Their historical development is summarized. The manner in which each is derived from either of the two alternative points of view of the experimentalist and the theoretician is compared and contrasted. Tables are included for the conversion of equations and numerical values from one system to another.

Experimental Investigation of the Power Generation Performance of Floating-Point Absorber Wave Energy Systems: Preprint

Description: The extraction of energy from ocean waves has gained interest in recent years. The floating-point absorber (FPA) is one of the most promising devices among a wide variety of wave energy conversion technologies. Early theoretical studies mainly focused on understanding the hydrodynamics of the system and on predicting the maximum power that could be extracted by a heaving body. These studies evolve from the investigation of floating-body interactions in offshore engineering and naval architectur… more

Membrane-Organized Chemical Photoredox Systems

Description: This project has three interrelated goals relevant to solar water photolysis, which are to develop: (1) vesicle-organized assemblies for H2 photoproduction that utilize pyrylium and structurally related compounds as combined photosensitizers and cyclic electroneutral transmembrane electron carriers; (2) transmembrane redox systems whose reaction rates can be modulated by light; and (3) homogeneous catalysts for water oxidation. In area (1), initial efforts to photogenerate H2 from vectorially-o… more
