Physics and numerics of the tensor code (incomplete preliminary documentation)

Description: The present TENSOR code is a descendant of a code originally conceived by Maenchen and Sack and later adapted by Cherry. Originally, the code was a two-dimensional Lagrangian explicit finite difference code which solved the equations of continuum mechanics. Since then, implicit and arbitrary Lagrange-Euler (ALE) algorithms have been added. The code has been used principally to solve problems involving the propagation of stress waves through earth materials, and considerable development of rock … more

Preliminary design specifications for the compact weapon effects display system

Description: This report provides preliminary design and specification information to fabricate a compact Weapons Effects Display System. The system is capable of calculating and displaying the effects of thermal flux, radiation, and blast pressure from a nuclear weapon. EG&G was asked to evaluate analog computer logic of an existing Weapons Effects Display System (WEDS), make the necessary changes and develop preliminary specifications to fabricate a more compacted system. Also included was to design any n… more

An ESME update, v. 8.05

Description: The program ESME for modeling the longitudinal degree of freedom of beam dynamics in proton synchrotrons is described in the ``User`s Guide to ESME v. 8.0`` released 8 March 1993. This note updates the User`s Guide to the state of the code at 15 June 1993. To simplify moving the code to the various UNIX machines at Fermilab and sharing it with other laboratories, it has been decided to promote the HIGZ graphics version. A few new graphics parameters are described which have been introduced in c… more

2005 DOE Computer Graphics Forum Site Survey

Description: The Information Management and Graphics Group supports and develops tools that enhance our ability to access, display, and understand large, complex data sets. Activities include developing visualization software for terascale data exploration; running two video production labs; supporting graphics libraries and tools for end users; maintaining four PowerWalls and assorted other advanced displays; and providing integrated tools for searching, organizing, and browsing scientific data. The Data g… more

Developing Grid based infrastructure or climate modeling

Description: In this paper we discuss the development of a high performance climate modeling system as an example of the application of Grid based technology to climate modeling. The climate simulation system at Argonne currently includes a scientific modeling interface (Espresso) written in Java which incorporates Globus middleware to facilitate climate simulations on the Grid. The climate modeling system also includes a high performance version of MM5v3.4 modified for long climate simulations on our 512 p… more

Compact representation of radiation patterns using spherical mode expansions

Description: This report presents the results of an investigation of SM (Spherical Mode) expansions as a compact and efficient alternative to the use of current distributions for generating radiation patterns. The study included three areas: (1) SM expansion from the radiation pattern; (2) SM expansion from the antenna current; and (3) Literature search. SM expansions were obtained from radiation patterns during the initial phase of this study. Although straightforward in principal, however, this technique … more

Zgoubi user`s guide. Version 4

Description: The computer code Zgoubi calculates trajectories of charged particles in magnetic and electric fields. At the origin specially adapted to the definition and adjustment of beam lines and magnetic spectrometers, it has so-evolved that it allows the study of systems including complex sequences of optical elements such as dipoles, quadrupoles, arbitrary multipoles and other magnetic or electric devices, and is able as well to handle periodic structures. Compared to other codes, it presents several … more

Transfer of Air Force technical procurement bid set data to small businesses, using CALS and EDI: Test report

Description: This report documents a test transfer of three Air Force technical procurement bid sets to one large and twelve small businesses, using the Department of Defense (DoD) Continuous Acquisition and Life-cycle Support (CALS) and ANSI ASC X12 Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) standards. The main goal of the test was to evaluate the effectiveness of using CALS technical data within the context of the DoD`s EDI-based standard approach to electronic commerce in procurement, with particular emphasis on … more

A Python interface with Narcisse graphics

Description: Narcisse is a graphics package developed by our French colleagues at Centre d`Etudes de Limeil Valenton of the Commissariat d`Energie Atomique. Narcisse is quite comprehensive; it can do two-, three-, and four-dimensional plots (the latter meaning that the surface is colored according to the values of an arbitrary function). One can open and send plots to a Narcisse window on a distant machine. Narcisse has a user-friendly graphical user interface (GUI) which, once a graph has appeared, allows … more

Multimedia Feedback Systems for Engineering

Description: The World Wide Web has become a key tool for information sharing. Engineers and scientists are finding that the web is especially suited to publishing the graphical, multi-layered information that is typical of their work. Web pages are easier to distribute than hardcopy. Web movies have become more accessible, in many offices, than videos. Good VRML viewing software, bundled with most new PCs, has sufficient power to support many engineering needs. In addition to publishing information science… more

Crystal Ball Single Event Display

Description: The Single Event Display (SED) is a routine that is designed to provide information graphically about a triggered event within the Crystal Ball. The SED is written entirely in FORTRAN and uses the CERN-based HICZ graphing package. The primary display shows the amount of energy deposited in each of the NaI crystals on a Mercator-like projection of the crystals. Ten different shades and colors correspond to varying amounts of energy deposited within a crystal. Information about energy clusters is… more
