Serological Relationships of Azotobacter Species

Description: In order to clarify the taxonomic problems which exist among the group azotobacter by serological method, 24 cultures of Azotobacter including 9 species were tested as antigens in Ouchterlony plates against 3 different antisera obtained from rabbits immunized with A. chroococcum ACl6, A. macrocytogenes St.M. and A. vinelandii 12837, respectively. The results showed more cross reactivity in intraspecies reactions than in interspecies ones and indicated the presence of a common immunogenic determ… more

Comparison of Wind-Tunnel, Rocket, and Flight Drag Measurements for Eight Airplane Configurations at Mach Numbers Between 0.7 and 1.6

Description: Report presenting comparisons of low-lift drag measurements on eight airplane configurations at a range of Mach numbers using various techniques. Data was obtained from wind-tunnel testing, rocket-propelled model testing, and airplane flight testing. The majority of the data showed agreement and discrepancies were likely due to issues regarding surface condition, individual test setup and accuracy, and detail geometric differences between the airplanes and respective models.

The 'Mine/Yours' method of international comparisons of carbon emissions

Description: In previous work (Schipper, Unander & Lilliu 1999), we summarized a new method for comparing energy use and carbon emissions among various countries. We call this the ''Mine/Yours'' comparison. In this paper, we provide details of the comparisons methodology, and carry out the comparison on a number of IEA countries. We calculate the average energy intensities I for a sample of countries (''yours'') and multiply them by structural parameters S for a particular country (''mine''). Comparing the … more

National Renewable Energy Laboratory Pyrheliometer Comparisons: 24 September - 5 October 2012 (NPC-2012)

Description: The NREL Pyrheliometer Comparisons for 2012 (NPC-2012) were held at the Solar Radiation Research Laboratory in Golden, Colorado, from September 24 through October 5 for the purpose of transferring the World Radiometric Reference (WRR) to participating instrument. Twenty scientists and engineers operated 32 absolute cavity radiometers and 18 conventional thermopile-based pyrheliometers to simultaneously measure clear-sky direct normal irradiance during the comparisons. The transfer standard grou… more

The Analysis of the Accumulation of Type II Error in Multiple Comparisons for Specified Levels of Power to Violation of Normality with the Dunn-Bonferroni Procedure: a Monte Carlo Study

Description: The study seeks to determine the degree of accumulation of Type II error rates, while violating the assumptions of normality, for different specified levels of power among sample means. The study employs a Monte Carlo simulation procedure with three different specified levels of power, methodologies, and population distributions. On the basis of the comparisons of actual and observed error rates, the following conclusions appear to be appropriate. 1. Under the strict criteria for evaluation of … more

Interlaboratory Comparisons of NbTi Critical Current Measurements

Description: We report on a multi-institute comparison of critical current data measured on a modern NbTi wire for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), which has shown a standard deviation below 1% in critical current density spread in more than 1500 measurements. Interlaboratory comparisons on Nb{sub 3}Sn wires have shown ambiguities that could be attributable to strain related differences in critical current density, originating from differences in sample handling, reaction, and mounting techniques, or also t… more

Comparison of Predicted and Actual Control-Fixed Stability and Control Characteristics of a Douglas A-26B Airplane

Description: Report presents a comparison of predicted qualities of the A-26B airplane with actual flying qualities determined in testing. From Summary: "The results indicate that the control-fixed, power-off stability and control characteristics of a conventional airplane can be predicted from the dimensions of the airplane and from general wind-tunnel data now available with sufficient accuracy for design purposes. No estimate of control forces, of effects of power on stability, or of adverse aileron yaw … more

RADIATION MEASUREMENTS BY BROOKHAVEN NATIONAL LABORATORY DURING THE WOODS HOLE OCEANOGRAPHIC INSTITUTION INTERCOMPARISON STUDY, MAY-JUNE 2000.

Description: The WHOI buoy radiometer intercomparison took place during May and June, 2000 at the WHOI facility. The WHOI IMET, JAMSTEC Triton, and NOAA TAO buoy systems were operated from a beach site and the Brookhaven National Laboratory set up two Portable Radiation Package systems (P01 and P02) alongside the WHOI instrumentation on the roof of the Clark Building, about 300 m away. The BNL instruments were named ''P01'' and ''P02'' and were identical. Buoy instruments were all leveled to {+-}1{degree} t… more

Mass and Mass Values

Description: Report discussing the different bases for determining mass values and instances where these differences may be crucial. The first part is a historical summary of weighing, standards, and the assignment of value; and the interfacing of mass measurements with civilization. The second part discusses in detail the methods of assigning mass values. Ways to convert from values on one basis to values on another basis are discussed.

An Empirical Investigation of Marascuilo's Ú₀ Test with Unequal Sample Sizes and Small Samples

Description: The study seeks to determine the effect upon the Marascuilo Ú₀ statistic of violating the small sample assumption. The study employed a Monte Carlo simulation technique to vary the degree of sample size and unequal sample sizes within experiments to determine the effect of such conditions, Twenty-two simulations, with 1200 trials each, were used. The following conclusion appeared to be appropriate: The Marascuilo Ú₀ statistic should not be used with small sample sizes and it is recommended that… more

A Comparison of Near-Death Experiences Occurring Before and After 1975: Results From an Internet Survey

Description: Abstract: The 1975 publication of Life After Life (Moody, 1975) led to wide public recognition of near death experiences (NDEs). Much of the early NDE research, in the late 1970s and early 1980s, studied NDEs occurring predominantly before 1975. If the content and aftereffects of NDEs remained constant before and after 1975, this early NDE research may be considered applicable to NDEs occurring more recently. This study used the methodology of an Internet-based questionnaire survey that has … more

A Comparison of 1 T(Omega) and 10 T (Omega) High Resistance Standards Between NIST and Sandia

Description: NIST-built 10 T{Omega} and commercial 1 T{Omega} standard resistors were hand carried between NIST and Sandia for a high resistance comparison. The comparison tested the ruggedness of the new NIST-built standard resistors, provided a check of the scaling between the two laboratories, supported measurements to reestablish NIST calibration services at 10 T{Omega} and 100 T{Omega}, and demonstrated the possibility of establishing a NIST high resistance measurement assurance program (MAP). The comp… more

Comments on Stuart Twemlow's "Misidentified Flying Objects? An Integrated Psychodynamic Perspective on Dear-Death Experiences and UFO Abductions"

Description: Abstract: In addition to the hypotheses on UFO abductions and near-death experiences described by Stuart Twemlow, another one has been put forward by researchers over the years that increases the complexity of the question of the reality of these experiences. Furthermore, there is some claimed physical evidence for abductions, while there is none for near-death experiences (NDEs). The exploration of unusual personal changes at the time of an abduction or NDE certainly warrants further attenti… more
