Self-doping effects in epitaxially grown graphene

Description: Self-doping in graphene has been studied by examining single-layer epitaxially grown graphene samples with differing characteristic lateral terrace widths. Low energy electron microscopy was used to gain real-space information about the graphene surface morphology, which was compared with data obtained by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to study the effect of the monolayer graphene terrace width on the low energy dispersions. By altering the graphene terrace width, we report significa… more

Quantum simulations of small electron-hole complexes

Description: The Green's Function Monte Carlo method is applied to the calculation of the binding energies of electron-hole complexes in semiconductors. The quantum simulation method allows the unambiguous determination of the ground state energy and the effects of band anisotropy on the binding energy. 22 refs., 1 fig.

High-resolution angle-resolved photoemission studies of high Tc superconductor Bi sub 2 Sr sub 2 CaCu sub 2 O sub 8

Description: An angle-resolved photoemission study of the normal and superconducting states in Bi{sub 2}Sr{sub 2}CaCu{sub 2}O{sub 8} was performed. Measurements in the normal state show bands dispersing through the Fermi level from at least 350 meV below E{sub F}. The Fermi level crossings are consistant with local-density band calculation, including a point calculated to be of Bi-O character. Additional measurements were made where bands crossed the Fermi level between 100 and 250K, along with measurements… more

High-resolution EPR and piezospectroscopy studies of the lithium-oxygen donor in germanium

Description: Lithium-oxygen donors in germanium were studied at low concentration (< 10/sup 14/ cm/sup -3/) by means of Electron Paramagnetic Resonance and Photoelectric Piezospectroscopy. We find unambiguously four equivalent real-space positions with <111> symmetry, which together with the four-valley conduction band lead to a 16-fold ground state. The system exhibits dynamic tunneling between the four equivalent orientations.

Positron annihilation studies of the electronic structure and fermiology of the high-[Tc] superconductors

Description: We discuss the application of the positron annihilation angular correlation (ACAR) spectroscopy for investigating the electronic structure and Fermiology of the high-T[sub c] superconductors, with focus on the YBa[sub 2]Cu[sub 3]O[sub 7] system where most of the experimental and theoretical work has to date been concentrated. Comparisons between measured 2D-ACAR positron spectra and band theory predictions show a remarkable agreement (for the normal state), indicating that the electronic struct… more

Angle resolved photoemission on K{sub 0.3}MoO{sub 3}, TiTe{sub 2} and Ti{sub 1+x}S{sub 2}

Description: The authors have performed high resolution angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (HRARPES) on samples of K{sub 0.3}MoO{sub 3}, TiTe{sub 2} and Ti{sub 1+x}S{sub 2}, materials which are a quasi-one dimensional metal, a quasi-two dimensional metal, and a quasi two-dimensional metal (x > 0) or semi-conductor (x = 0), respectively. They are interested in looking at these samples using HRARPES as part of the general program to assess the use of photoemission to determine whether a particular syst… more

Signature of the CuO{sub 2} Plane Related Bands in YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 6.9} as Seen by Angle-Resolved Photoemission

Description: The authors present first-principles computations together with corresponding angle-resolved photoemission measurements in order to delineate the shape and polarization dependence of the spectral feature associated with the CuO{sub 2} plane-related bands from the (001) surface of YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 6.9}. Theoretical predictions are found to be in remarkable agreement with the observed character of the spectral feature between 0 and 0.3 eV binding energy (for k{sub {parallel}} values along… more

Observation of excitonic and band-to-band behavior in ordered InGaP{sub 2} alloys

Description: Photoluminescence measurements on ordered InGaP{sub 2} were studied as a function of temperature, laser power density, and magnetic field. The temperature varied between 1.4 and 300 K, the laser power densities ranged from 10 nW/cm{sup 2} to 20 W/cm{sup 2}, and the maximum magnetic field was 13.6 T. The data show both excitonic and band-to-band behavior, depending upon the incident laser power density. A consistent interpretation of all data leads to a type-II valence-band offset between the or… more

Electronic structure of metals and semiconductors: bulk, surface, and interface properties

Description: A theoretical study of the electronic structure of various metals and semiconductors is presented with the emphasis on understanding the properties of these materials when they are subjected to extreme conditions and in various different configurations. Among the bulk systems studied, the properties of cesium under high pressure are discussed in terms of the electronic structure calculated at various cell volumes using the pseudopotential method. Local fields or umklapp processes in semiconduct… more

Phase Separation and Facet Formation during the Growth of (GaAs)1-x(Ge2)x Alloy Layers by Metal Organic Vapour Phase Epitaxy

Description: Metal organic vapour phase epitaxy (GaAs)1-x(Ge2)x alloy layers, 0<x<0.22, were grown at temperatures between 640 and 690 C, on vicinal (001) GaAs substrates. Phase separation occurred in all the layers. The phase-separated microstructure changed with alloy composition, growth temperature, and substrate orientation. In x {approx} 0.1 layers grown at 640 C, Ge segregation occurred on {l_brace}115{r_brace}B planes associated with a {l_brace}115{r_brace}B surface faceting. Increase in growth… more
