Examinations of Pump Impellers From Sodium and Fused Salt Pump Endurance Tests

Description: Examinations of three Inconel pump impellers were made to establish the extent of cavitation damage and degree of carburization sustained during pump endurance tests. The pumps, two of which circulated fluoride salt and one sodium, had operated for the bulk of the test programs in the temperature range 1000-1250 deg F. Cavitation damage was manifested in each of the impellers by the formation of deep pits (in excess of 1/4-inch), the location of damaged areas varying with impeller geometry.

Neutron Losses to Pa-233 in the Aqueous Homogenous Breeder Reactor

Description: Neutron losses to Pa-233 in the blanket of the AHBR were computed and compared for two cases: (1) concentration of Pa-233 is maintained uniform by continuous mixing, (2) batches of fertile material are shifted periodically from high- to low-flux regions of blanket. It was found that, if the fertile material is cycled through three radial positions in three days, the loss of neutrons to Pa-233 is no more than one per cent greater than if it is mixed continuously.

Preliminary MSRE Gamma Ray Source and Biological Shielding Survey

Description: The major gamma ray sources and some of the resultant biological shielding requirements have been evaluated at both full power operation and following shut down for the Molten Salt Reactor Experiment. The sources include gamma rays due to the fission events in the reactor and those associated with activation of materials. Shielding estimates were made for the reactor system cells and for some maintenance facilities.

Internal Bremsstrahlung and Decay Scheme of Sb¹¹⁹

Description: The spectrum and yield of internal bremsstrahlung accompanying electron capture form S- and P-states in sb119 were measured and compared with the theory of Glauber and Martin. sb119 was obtained as the daughter from el l9 produced by the ~b(dx,n )~ell9 and Sn(a, xn)~ell9 reactions. The decay is by orbital electron capture to the 23.83-key state in Sb¹¹⁹. The following results were obtained: Sb¹¹⁹ half life, 38.0 hr ; Sb¹¹⁹ -Snl l9 decay energy. 579 f 20 kev; half life of the 23 83-kev state and… more

The Radiation Processing Research and Development Program at Brookhaven National Laboratory

Description: The generic term "chemonuclear" has been assigned to any chemical process system using nuclear energy as the prime energy source. The type of effect which induces the chemical change, or produces the chemical is of importance in classifying the type of chemonuclear process, or reactor involved. Four types of effects are identified for this classification. These are radiation, thermal, electrical, and photolytic effects. The radiation effects include the interaction with matter of high energy pa… more

Atomic Energy Act of 1954 [As Amended Through P.L. 105-394, November 13, 1998]: An Act for the development and control of atomic energy

Description: The Atomic Energy Act (AEA) established the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) to promote the "utilization of atomic energy for peaceful purposes to the maximum extent consistent with the common defense and security and with the health and safety of the public." Since the abolition of the AEC, much of the AEA has been carried out by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the U.S. Department of Energy. When EPA was formed, however, the AEC's authority to issue generally applicable environmental radia… more
