A study of the characteristics of human-pilot control response to simulated aircraft lateral motions

Description: Report presents the results of studies made in an attempt to provide information on the control operations of the human pilot. These studies included an investigation of the ability of pilots to control simulated unstable yawing oscillations, a study of the basic characteristics of human-pilot control response, and a study to determine whether and to what extent pilot control response can be represented in an analytical form.

Measurement of Visibility From the Pilot's Cockpit on Different Airplane Types

Description: A process for the measurement of the visibility of airplanes from the pilot's cockpit is developed. The apparatus necessary for the measurements was suitably constructed and measurements of the fields of vision were made with it. The visibilities of six airplanes of different types of construction and use were measured, as well as the visibility of an automobile for comparison. An attempt was made to establish minimum visibility requirements and to express the excellence of visibility by means of a numerical coefficient.

Study of exit phase of flight of a very high altitude hypersonic airplane by means of a pilot-controlled analog computer

Description: Report using an analog computer to study the effects of aerodynamic parameters on the ability of a pilot to control a hypersonic research airplane capable of flight at very high altitudes. The results, which are based on pilot opinion of the difficulty of the control task, are illustrated by time histories of angle of attack, angle of sideslip, and roll angle. The basic airplane configuration was generally found to be unflyable and the arrangement of the information on the pilot's display was found to have an important influence on the control task.

Flight investigation of the acceptability of a small side-located controller used with an irreversible hydraulic control system

Description: Report presenting a flight investigation to determine the acceptability of a small side-located controller which is used as the primary airplane controller in an irreversible hydraulic-power control system. Pilot opinion was obtained concerning the acceptability of the controller while performing lateral and longitudinal maneuvers in a jet-trainer airplane at cruising-flight conditions. Results indicated that the location of the controller is consistent with pilot comfort and the airplane is flyable with the side-located controller.

Pilot's loss of orientation in inverted spins

The pilots were found to prefer the control-force characteristics provided by a damper rather than a spring feel system. Information about characteristics in pitch, characteristics in roll, dynamic lateral stability, and rough-air flying, tracking, and landing characteristics is provided.
