Investigation of First Stage of Two-Stage Turbine Designed for Free-Vortex Flow

Description: Note presenting an experimental investigation of the first stage of a two-stage turbine designed for free-vortex flow. The results of the investigation showed that highest adiabatic efficiency was attained when the turbine was operating near the design total-pressure ratio. Results regarding power and efficiency, weight rate of gas flow through the turbine, weight-flow distribution at stator-cascade outlets, stator and rotor flow angles at mean radii, radial distribution of flow angle, radial distribution of the rotor-outlet flow angle, radial distribution of the total pressures at the stator-cascade outlet, and radial distribution of rotor-outlet pressure are provided.

Description: Report presenting a series of single-cylinder engine tests run to determine a satisfactory method of reducing oil consumption in radial air-cooled engines with flat-face compression rings as standard parts and equipped with cylinder barrels salvaged by porous chrome plating. Testing was conducted using porous chrome-plated cylinders with straight and choke bores with standard flat-face compression rings.

Infrared Radiation From Explosions in a Spark-Ignition Engine

Description: This report presents the results of an investigation to determine the variations in intensity and spectral distribution of the radiant energy emitted by the flames during normal and knocking explosions in an engine. Radiation extending into the infrared was transmitted by a window of fluorite, placed either near the spark plug or over the detonation zone at opposite ends of the combustion chamber. Concave, surface-silvered mirrors focused the beam, first at the slit of a stroboscope which opened for about 2 degrees of crank angle at any desired point in the engine cycle, and then upon the target of a sensitive thermocouple for measuring radiation intensity.

Resonance Vibrations in Intake and Exhaust Pipes of in-Line Engines 3: The Inlet Process of a Four-Stroke-Cycle Engine

Description: Using a previously developed method, the boundary process of four-stroke-cycle engines are set up. The results deviate considerably from those obtained under the assumption that the velocity fluctuation is proportional to the cylinder piston motion. The deviation is less at the position of resonance frequencies. By the method developed, the effect of the resonance vibrations on the volumetric efficiency can be demonstrated.

Researches on Direct Injection in Internal-Combustion Engines

Description: Report presenting a solution for reducing the fatigue of the Diesel engine by permitting the preservation of its components and, at the same time, raising its specific horsepower to a par with that of carburetor engines, while maintaining for the Diesel engine its perogative of burning heavy fuel under optimum economical conditions. The feeding of Diesel engines by injection pumps actuated by engine compression achieves the required high speeds of injection readily and permits rigorous control of the combustible charge introduced into each cylinder and of the peak pressure in the resultant cycle.

Research and Design Problems Introduced by Increased Power Output

Description: In what follows the question of the number and geometrical arrangement of the cylinders so important in the design of high performance power units will be considered from various points of view. A discussion will be given of the possibilities of the various working processes and an investigation will be made of possible means for improving the continuous operation and take-off performance, particularly the methods of supercharging, increasing the r.p.m., and employing the two-stroke-cycle engine. Effect of Exhaust Back Pressure on Engine Power

Description: Report presenting data on the effect of exhaust back pressure on engine power for 14 aircraft engines. The data showed that the effect of exhaust back pressure on engine power varies with engine speed, range of back pressure and manifold pressure involved, and engine type. The only method of accurately determining the effect of back pressure on engine power than can currently be recommended is to test the specific engine type at the engine speed for which data are desired.

The Effect of Changes in Compression Ratio Upon Engine Performance

Description: "This report is based upon engine tests made at the Bureau of Standards during 1920, 1921, 1922, and 1923. The majority of these tests were of aviation engines and were made in the Altitude Laboratory. For a small portion of the work a single cylinder experimental engine was used. This, however, was operated only at sea-level pressures. The report shows that an increase in break horsepower and a decrease in the pounds of fuel used per brake horsepower hour usually results from an increase in compression ratio" (p. 399).

Description: "This investigation describes a visual method for making stroboscopic observations, through a large number of small windows, of the spread of flame throughout the combustion chamber of a gasoline engine. Data, secured by this method on a small engine burning gaseous fuels, are given to show the effects of mixture ratio, spark advance, engine speed, charge density, degree of dilution, compression ratio, and fuel composition on flame movement in the cylinder. Partial indicator diagrams showing pressure development during the combustion period are included" (p. 697).

Evaluation of Scavenging in Two-Stroke-Cycle Engines

Description: The viewpoints are discussed, according to which the scavenging of two-stroke-cycle engines can be evaluated, and the relations between scavenging pressure and the quantity of the scavenging medium required, as also between the scavenging pressure and the revolution speed, are developed. It is further shown that the power increase is limited by the scavenging process, so that further researches are desirable for qualitative improvement. These results lead to several conclusions regarding the propulsion of motor vehicles by the two-stroke-cycle engines.

Performance and Ranges of Application of Various Types of Aircraft-Propulsion System

Description: Note presenting a discussion of the performance characteristics of the compound engine, the turbine-propeller engine, the turbojet engine, the turbo ramjet engine, the ramjet engine, and the rocket engine. Insight is provided into the proper position of each of these engine types in the speed-range spectrum of aircraft operation.
