A method for studying the hunting oscillations of and airplane with a simple type of automatic control

Flight Tests of Modifications to Improve the Aileron Control Characteristics of a North American XP-51 Airplane (AC No. 41-38)

Description: Investigations were undertaken to improve the ailerons of a P-51 fighter so as to obtain greater effectiveness without increasing the stick forces. Modifications consisted of increasing the deflection range of the aileron to 70 percent and changing the original concave section to a thick section with beveled trailing edge. Results of the modified ailerons showed an increase in effectiveness over the original aileron of 70 percent at low speed and 55 percent at high speeds.

Wind-Tunnel Investigation of the Effects of Spoilers on the Characteristics of a Low-Drag Airfoil Equipped With a 0.25-Chord Slotted Flap

Description: Report discussing the effects of circular-arc spoilers on the section characteristics of an NACA 66,2-216 airfoil with a 0.25-chord slotted flap. Spoilers were tested on the upper surface of the airfoil, on the lower surface, and on both simultaneously. Only the simultaneous placement of spoilers was found to provide satisfactory results as a lateral control device.

Rocket-Model Investigation to Determine the Hinge-Moment and Normal-Force Properties of a Full-Span, Constant-Chord, Partially Balanced Trailing-Edge Control on a 60 Degree Clipped Delta Wing Between Mach Numbers of 0.50 and 1.26

Description: Report presenting a free-flight investigation of a rocket-powered research model to determine the hinge-moment and normal-force characteristics of a trailing-edge control on a delta wing between Mach numbers of 0.50 and 1.26. The hinge-line location of 40 percent control chord satisfactorily reduced the high hinge moments associated with plain flap-type controls. Results regarding hinge moments and normal force are provided.

Application of Spring Tabs to Elevator Controls

Description: Report presenting equations for calculating the stick-force characteristics obtained with a spring-tab type of elevator control. Mathematical treatise on the recovery from a flat spin

Description: In this mathematical investigation, made in collaboration with Dr. Wilhelm Schmidt, we interpret the temporary change (due to some disturbance) in the quantities which define the position of the airplane while in a flat spin. Wind-Tunnel Investigation at Low Speed of Sideslipping, Rolling, Yawing, and Pitching Characteristics for a Model of a 45 Degree Swept-Wing Fighter-Type Airplane

Description: Report presenting an investigation in the stability tunnel at low speed to determine the rolling characteristics at combined angles of attack and sideslip for a model of a fighter-type airplane with a 45 degree sweptback wing. Wind-tunnel investigation of control-surface characteristics 17: beveled-trailing-edge flaps of 0.20, 0.30, and 0.40 airfoil chord on an NACA 0009 airfoil

Description: Report presenting force tests in two-dimensional flow in the 4- by 6-foot vertical tunnel to determine the aerodynamic characteristics of an NACA 0009 airfoil with flaps having chord at 3 locations of the airfoil chord and three degrees of the beveled trailing edges. The results indicated that, with a smooth leading edge, the increased trailing-edge angle on the flaps with sealed gaps decreased the slope of the control-fixed lift curve and the lift effectiveness.
