Technical studies on a composite groundwater sample from F- and H-Area

Description: A composite sample of groundwater from F- and H-Areas was collected by Waste Management Tech and delivered to the Savannah River Laboratory to use in preliminary experiments that would test three remediation technologies under consideration. The three technologies are pH adjustment and filtration, decontamination with a strong acid ion exchange resin, and decontamination with a chelating ion exchange resin.

Mitigation of biofouling using coatings, year 2. Quarterly progress report No. 2. [PWR; BWR]

Description: Objectives of this project are to evaluate benefits associated with control of the surface energetic properties of materials used in heat exchangers; and to identify preferred ranges of these surface conditions that minimize deposits of biological fouling known to deteriorate heat exchange efficiencies in cooling water systems. The technical approach employed uses special diagnostic plates in novel flow cells where fluid flow conditions can be well-controlled, modifying the surface chemistry an… more

H02 WETLAND TREATMENT SYSTEM WATER CHEMISTRY SAMPLING AND RESULTS REPORT

Description: The H-02 Wetland Treatment System (Figure 1) is used to remove heavy metals (e.g., copper and zinc) from the H-Area process and storm water discharge. Routine flow enters an equalization basin by inlets on either the east (Location 1) or west end (Location 2). The west end influent constitutes 75% of the average flow into the basin which has an average residence time of approximately 3 days at low pool (i.e., 120 gal/min. through a volume of 0.5 million gallons). The water then exits via the ba… more

The use of ALUM and activated silica for 100 Area process water coagulation. Final report

Description: Production rates of the Hanford reactors can be increased in proportion to the quantity of process cooling water which can be supplied to them. This water must be of such a quality that slug and tube corrosion rates are acceptable, the gross activity of the effluent water must not be excessive, the concentration of specific radioactive isotopes constituting a radiological hazard must be minimized, and the film formation rates should be as low as possible. In the Hanford water treatment process,… more

Preliminary investigation of water coagulation characteristics as affects reactor effluent radionuclides

Description: Several theories have been advanced regarding the structure and characteristics of the aluminum hydroxide molecule when produced from alum in the water treatment process. The Water Treatment Task Force initiated this test to exploit a theory that increased adsorption of soil-leached elements, present in Columbia River water, by the floc particle would occur when the precipitate vas formed in its terminal pH state. This report discusses a half-plant test which was initiated at E Reactor Plant wh… more

Modeling the diffusion of Na+ in compacted water-saturated Na-bentonite as a function of pore water ionic strength

Description: Assessments of bentonite barrier performance in waste management scenarios require an accurate description of the diffusion of water and solutes through the barrier. A two-compartment macropore/nanopore model (on which smectite interlayer nanopores are treated as a distinct compartment of the overall pore space) was applied to describe the diffusion of {sup 22}Na{sup +} in compacted, water-saturated Na-bentonites and then compared with the well-known surface diffusion model. The two-compartment… more

Generic aging management programs for license renewal of BWR reactor coolant systems components.

Description: The paper reviews the existing generic aging management programs (AMPs) for the reactor coolant system (RCS) components in boiling water reactors (BWRs), including the reactor pressure vessel and internals, the reactor recirculation system, and the connected piping. These programs have been evaluated in the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) report, Generic Aging Lessons Learned (GALL), NUREG-1801, for their use in the license renewal process to manage several aging effects, including los… more

Selected data for low-temperature (less than 90{sup 0}C) geothermal systems in the United States: reference data for US Geological Survey Circular 892

Description: Supporting data are presented for the 1982 low-temperature geothermal resource assessment of the United States. Data are presented for 2072 geothermal sites which are representative of 1168 low-temperature geothermal systems identified in 26 States. The low-temperature geothermal systems consist of 978 isolated hydrothermal-convection systems, 148 delineated-area hydrothermal-convection systems, and 42 delineated-area conduction-dominated systems. The basic data and estimates of reservoir condi… more

Reaction of Bullfrog tuff with J-13 well water at 90{sup 0}C and 150{sup 0}C

Description: A series of experiments was conducted on crushed tuff at 90{sup 0}C and 150{sup 0}C and on core wafer samples at 150{sup 0}C. The results show the following: increasing the ratio of rock to water increases the rate of approach to steady-state concentrations in solution. Surface outcrop samples of Bullfrog tuff contain a minor component of highly soluble material believed to be a residue from the evaporation of surface runoff water in the pores of the rock. This material can be removed by shakin… more

Chemical Properties of Pore Water and Sediment at Three Wetland Sites Near the F- and H-Area Seepage Basins, Savannah River Site

Description: In 1980, vegetative stress and arboreal mortality in wetland plant communities down-gradient from the F- and H-Area seepage basins were detected using aerial imagery. By 1988, approximately six acres in H-Area and four acres in F-Area had been adversely impacted. Today, wetland plant communities have become well established at the H-Area tree-kill zone.

Water Chemistry for KER Loop 1- June 29, 1959 to December 31, 1959

Description: One of the primary reasons for operating the high pressure KER loops is to obtain information concerning water quality control characteristics for recirculating water cooled reactors. The KER-1 loop is predominantly carbon steel and approximates the water quality conditions specified for the New Production Reactor (NPR).
