Studies of the subsurface effects of earthquakes

Description: As part of the National Terminal Waste Storage Program, the Savannah River Laboratory is conducting a series of studies on the subsurface effects of earthquakes. This report summarizes three subcontracted studies. (1) Earthquake damage to underground facilities: the purpose of this study was to document damage and nondamage caused by earthquakes to tunnels and shallow underground openings; to mines and other deep openings; and to wells, shafts, and other vertical facilities. (2) Earthquake rela… more

Determination of basalt physical and thermal properties at varying temperatures, pressures, and moisture contents. Second progress report, fiscal year 1979

Description: The rock mechanics testing performed at the Earth Mechanics Institute of the Colorado School of Mines for Rockwell Hanford Operations under Subcontract SA-917 is summarized. Cores were supplied from drill hole DC-8 on the Hanford Site, characterized geologically, and tested for thermal and physical properties for designing long-term underground storage of radioactive waste materials. This report presents the approved test procedures, results, and data analysis for this test series. Results indi… more

Constitutive models applied in the analysis of creep of rock salt

Description: constitutive equations for the creep of rock salt that have been utilized in the analyses of salt deformations are summarized. Primary creep, secondary creep, and elastoviscoplastic models are discussed. The strains predicted by several of the primary creep constitutive models are compared for identical conditions of deviatoric stress and temperature. Steady-state creep rates are compared under identical conditions of deviatoric stress and temperature for the secondary creep equations. 4 tables. more

Determination of basalt physical and thermal properties at varying temperatures, pressures, and moisture contents. First progress report, fiscal year 1979

Description: This report is a summary of the rock mechanics testing done at the Earth Mechanics Institute of the Colorado School of Mines for Rockwell Hanford Operations under Subcontract SA-917. Cores were supplied from drill hole DC-6 on the Hanford Site, characterized geologically, and tested for thermal and physical properties for designing long-term underground storage of radioactive waste materials. This report presents the approved test procedures, results, and data analysis for this test series. Res… more

Determination of basalt physical and thermal properties at varying temperatures, pressures, and moisture contents. Third progress report, fiscal year 1979

Description: The rock mechanics testing performed at the Earth Mechanics Institute of the Colorado School of Mines for Rockwell Hanford Operations under subcontract SA-917 is summarized. Cores were supplied from drill hole DC-4 on the Hanford Site, characterized geologically, and tested for thermal and physical properties for designing long-term underground storage of radioactive waste materials. The approved test procedures, results, and data analysis for this test series are presented. Uniaxial and triaxi… more

Characterization and recognition of intraflow structures, Grande Ronde Basalt

Description: This investigation was carried out as part of a feasibility study for long-term storage of nuclear waste at depth in the Pasco Basin. Three general types of intraflow structures were found at Sentinel Gap: flows with stubby, irregular columns that lack a well-developed entablature; flows consisting of multiple tiers of largely entablature-type columns; and flows with a well-developed colonnade and entablature showing a sharp break between the two. Certain features occur locally in all three typ… more

Data input manual for RSI/TRANCO: a finite element heat conduction computer program. [Rock mechanics for waste terminal storage]

Description: This report addresses a rock mechanics problem in the National Waste Terminal Storage program, with the objective of storing radioactive wastes in deep geologic formations. This report provides information on input data as well as FORTRAN listing of RSI/TRANCO, which solves plane isotropic or anisotropic transient or steady state heat transfer problems. An example problem is presented to illustrate the mesh preparation, data input, and sample output. (DLC)

Summary review of workshop on movement of fluids in largely impermeable rocks

Description: As a starting point for the workshop, the following general question was posed, ''What data base, analytical methodology, and technology are necessary to adequately forecast the physical behavior of the subsurface disposal facility.'' The critical consideration was the movement of fluids through fractured rock masses. The first day of the workshop was devoted to general discussions of selected topics. On the second day, the participants were divided into six working groups: (1) definition and c… more

Hydrologic properties of shale and related argillaceous rocks

Description: This report is the result of a bibliographic study designed primarily to collect hydrologic data on American clay-rich rocks. The following information was also sought: stratigraphy, environment of deposition, mineralogic composition, and diagenetic changes. The collected numerical data are presented in tables which contain densities, porosities, and/or hydraulic conductivities of approximately 360 samples. Additional data include hydraulic diffusivities, resistivities, flow rates, and rock str… more
