Description: Each week the U.S. Department of Energy s Vehicle Technology Office (VTO) posts a Fact of the Week on their website: http://www1.eere.energy.gov/vehiclesandfuels/ . These Facts provide statistical information, usually in the form of charts and tables, on vehicle sales, fuel economy, gasoline prices, and other transportation-related trends. Each Fact is a stand-alone page that includes a graph, text explaining the significance of the data, the supporting information on which the graph was based, and the source of the data. Test results were in agreement with the results of the freely-falling-body test in that the wing failures in the transonic range occurred at velocities greater than the flutter velocity calculated from the two-dimensional theory.

Description: From Summary: "Long-range hypervelocity vehicles are studied in terms of their motion in powered flight. Powered flight is analyzed for an idealized propulsion system which approximates rocket motors. Unpowered flight is characterized by a return to earth along a ballistic, skip, or glide trajectory. Only those trajectories are treated which yield the maximum range for a given velocity at the end of powered flight. Aerodynamic heating is treated in a manner similar to that employed previously by the senior authors in studying ballistic missiles (NACA rep. 1381), with the exception that radiant as well as convective heat transfer is considered in connection with glide and skip vehicles."

An Assessment and Comparison of Fuel Cells for Transportation Applications

Description: Fuel cells offer the potential of a clean, efficient power source for buses, cars, and other transportation applications. When the fuel cell is run on methanol, refueling would be as rapid as with gasoline-powered internal combustion engines, providing a virtually unlimited range while still maintaining the smooth and quiet acceleration that is typical for electric vehicles.

Preliminary Aerodynamic Data Pertinent to Manned Satellite Reentry Configurations

Description: Report presenting some experimental data and calculations for a variety of aerodynamic shapes considered for use as manned reentry vehicles. Three types of vehicles were tested: non-lifting bodies, lifting bodies, and airplane-like vehicles. All of the configuration types were found to be suitable for use as manned reentry vehicles with certain fin and flap modifications for certain shapes.

Mine-Resistant, Ambush-Protected (MRAP) Vehicles: Background and Issues for Congress

Description: In late 2007, the Department of Defense (DOD) launched a major procurement initiative to replace most uparmored High Mobility, Multi-Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWVs) in Iraq with Mine-Resistant, Ambush-Protected (MRAP) vehicles by FY2009. MRAPs have been described as providing significantly more protection against Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) than uparmored HMMWVs. DOD's decision to acquire a new, smaller MRAP variant for use in Afghanistan; MRAP mechanical, logistical, and readiness concerns could be potential policy issues for congressional consideration. This report will be updated.
