Variations brillantes sur la cavatine favorite Aurora sorgerai

Description: This is a digital copy of the ca. 1830 edition of Henri Herz's Brilliant variations for the piano forte on the cavatina "Aurora che sorcerai" from Rossini's two-act melodrama "La donna del lago," (i.e., The lady of the lake). The library's copy is part of a bound collection of piano music by variopus nineteenth-century composers. The pianist, and Herz's friend, Franz Hünten adapted several passages of the music to suit the range of the contemporaneous piano fortes. A note on the t.p. indicates that "Mrs. [Lucy] Anderson had the distinguished honor of performing this piece before their Majesties at Brighton." Plate no. 476.

Theme and Variations for Wind Ensemble

Description: A set of variations can be any length and contain any number of variations. The same set of variations also can be fashioned to resemble any musical form. On this basic premise, Theme and Variations for Wind Ensemble was written. It is a continuous one movement composition. There is a statement of a theme with five subsequent variations.

Description: Note presenting a method of estimating the variation of thrust horsepower with air speed, when the power unit consists of a conventional, thin, metal, fixed-pitch propeller driven by an internal-combustion engine. Such a curve is needed for the estimation of airplane performance in conjunction with a curve of horsepower required for maintaining level flight.

Variations on a Theme by Shostakovich

Description: The Variations on a Theme by Shostakovich is scored for an orchestra of 3 flutes, 3 oboes, 2 bassoons, contra-bassoon, 4 horns, 3 C trumpets, 3 trombones, harp, harpischord, piano, percussion and strings. The entire work is approximately 17 minutes in duration. The subject for the Variations comes from the Fifteenth Symphony of Shostakovich, last movement. There are many allusions to the writing of Shostakovich in terms of gesture, orchestration, and harmonic structure.

Measurements of temperature variations in the atmosphere near the tropopause with reference to airspeed calibration by the temperature method

Description: Measurements of temperature variations in the atmosphere near the tropopause over land in the vicinity of Langley Field, Va., are presented. This investigation was made for the purpose of obtaining information on the accuracy of the temperature method(NACA TN 2046) of airspeed calibration over the range of Mach number from 0.6 to .08. The temperature surveys and the description of a specially designed thermometer are also presented.

Permeability variation of a taper-rolled wire cloth

Description: Report presenting the cloth permeability of rolling a tapering thickness on a 20x200-mesh stainless-steel wire clothing investigated experimentally. The application of the cloth was for the shell of a transpiration-cooled turbine blade operating at gas and shell temperatures of 2500 and 10000 degrees Fahrenheit. Results regarding the taper-rolled cloth and comparison of taper-and flat-rolled samples are provided.
